Critters, water and nature; the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve has it all
BY MATTHEW MARTZTEHACHAPI NEWS
Hidden along the eastside of Pacific Coast High-way across from OrangeCounty’s Bolsa Chica StateBeach, the Bolsa ChicaEcological Reserveincludes more than 1,200acres of undeveloped wet-lands, lowlands and lowermesa operated by the Cali-fornia Department of Fishand Game.
It is one of the lastremaining wetlands insouthern California.
For several thousandyears, Native Americansinhabited the wetlandsand surrounding bluffs, but for the past centurythe area was used for ahunting ground, for gunemplacements by theUnited States military dur-ing World War II and as anextensive oil productionfield.
More recently however, the reserve has been thehome to an abundance ofcoastal wildlife and isopen to the public toexplore daily from sunrise

Maps can be obtainedto help identify all thepossible things visitorsmight see during theirvisit.
Leaving the center, visi-tors will cross the LosPatos Bridge on their wayto the main trail that loops1.5 miles around the pris-tine coastal water inlet. Inspring, wildflowers oftenline the path from theparking lot to the uppermesa.
Just a short walk fromthe bridge are thereserve’s main marsh-lands, where all types ofmarine activity hums inthe shallow waters below along wooden pedestrianbridge, including stingrays, fish and nativeundersea plant life.
Visitors may also be ableto catch a glimpse of feistydiving terns or pelicans asthey look for tasty meal.
Every year, especiallyduring the migration sea-sons, almost 200 differentspecies of bird can be seenhere, including huge flocksof loons, grebes or scoters.
None of the trails on thereserve are too strenuous, providing a unique envi-ronment that is perfect forfamilies with small kidsand seniors.
Sunsets are the besttime to visit, as the views
are prime. With 95 percent of the
state's coastal wetlandsdestroyed, the Bolsa ChicaEcological Reserve is oneplace you don’t want tomiss visiting sometimesoon, as the explodingpopulation is alwaysthreatening to encroachupon this pristine naturaltreasure.
The reserve is approxi-mately 149 miles fromdowntown Tehachapi, at3842 Warner Ave., Hunt-ington Beach.
There are two parking

Relay is July 13-14 at Coy Burnett FieldBY DUANA PERA
CONTRIBUTING WRITER
This year we will “Celebrate 10Years of Relay” for our localAmerican Cancer Society Relayfor Life. On July 13 and 14 morethan 65 teams, 700 participantsand 200 survivors will take thefield and walk for 24 hours in thefight against cancer.
The general public is invited tocome join in the festivities andsupport our teams. The teamseach decorate their booths inthemes and most will be sellingwonderful items to help
fundraise for cancer research.Opening ceremonies start at 8:30a.m., the Mini-Concert starts at 5p.m. and the memorable Lumi-naria Ceremony starts at 8:30p.m. Closing ceremonies start onSunday at 8:30 a.m.
This is a wonderful opportunityfor anyone to come to the trackand be part of the largestfundraiser in Tehachapi. TheRelay teams are so excited thisyear and have come up withsome pretty inventive ways toraise funds.
For example, RST Cranes will
have their smallest crane at thefield and for only $10 anyone canlearn how to operate the craneand compete in the first Relay“Crane Rodeo.” Just drop the ballin three different buckets in theshortest amount of time to win.
“I’ll do that,” said Lisa Taylor,Luminaria Committee co-chairand member of Team Light YourWay. “I would pay $10 in a heart-beat to be able to operate acrane!”
The Entertainment Committeehas also put together a dayloaded with something for every-one. There will be theme lapsevery half hour for observers toguess the theme lap, or call for aschedule and just come join inthe fun.
This year, teams were offeredthe chance to sponsor a lap, andmany have done just that. TeamTerra-Gen Thunderbolts StrikeCancer are handing out pin-wheels and everyone will carrythe pinwheels as they walk thelaps.
And this year Relay is offering afree mini-concert for everyonestarting at 5 p.m. with local musi-cian and singer Mike Heckathorn. At 6 p.m. another local musician,Adam Wojack, will join with hisfellow band mates and take to thestage as Heralds of the Sword, orHOTS. This is a combination offantasy and rock in full medievalcostumes. Last on stage will be aChristian rock group from Rosa-
mond called “Strings and aPrayer.”
We plan to celebrate all daylong. Part of that celebration istheme laps, games in center fieldand lots of dancing and music. We are also doing flash mobs andeveryone interested in being partof our mobs can come join us; nodancing skills required!
But at 8:30 p.m., the LuminariaCommittee will once again pres-ent a memorable presentation onwhy we Relay. For one incrediblehour we come together at dusk toremember all those we have lostto cancer and light the Luminariabags around the track. As theglow sticks are lit, we walk in thedark and read the names of those
“in memory of” and those “inhonor of who have won or arewinning the fight against cancer.”
Kids Camp this year is going tobe outstanding. Bring your youngkids and for a small donation, they will be entertained by NitaDuhart and her playful team. Then walk the track and helpmake a difference in the fightagainst cancer by supporting ourteams.

DASH — a simple approach to lower blood pressureBY PAUL G. DONOHUE, M.D.
CONTRIBUTING WRITER
DEAR DR. DONO-HUE: I was very inter-ested in your columnon the DASH diet. Isthere a diet sheet list-ing all the items per-taining to this diet? How can I get one? Ithink it's a doable diet.— I.P.
ANSWER: DASH,Dietary Approaches toStop Hypertension, is adoable, simple andgood-tasting diet. Peo-ple are disappointed tofind out that the diet iscontained on one pagewith straightforwarddirectives. The sheetlists the number ofservings of a particularfood group, what con-stitutes a serving andexamples of the foodsin each group. That's
all there is. You canexpect a drop of 8 to 14points in blood pres-
sure ifyou'refaithfulto it. Oneof themostimpor-tant dietchanges
is limiting sodium(salt) consumption to1,500 grams.
Here's the diet:GRAINS:
Six to eight servingsa day; whole-grainbreads like wheat, cereals (both dry andcooked), brown riceand pastas are grains.A serving is one slice ofbread, one cup of drycereal and half a cup ofcooked cereal.
FRUITS: Four to six daily serv-
ings, with a servingbeing a moderatelysized whole fruit, ahalf-cup of frozen orcanned fruit or a half-cup of fruit juice.VEGETABLES:
Four to five servingsa day, with a servingbeing one cup of leafygreen veggie, 1/2 cupcut up, raw or cookedvegetables or 1/2 cupvegetable juice.DAIRY:
Two to three servingsa day of low-fat dairyproducts, with a serv-ing being a cup of skimor low-fat milk, a cupof yogurt or one and ahalf ounces of cheese.LEAN MEATS, POULTRY,FISH:
Six or fewer servings
a day. A serving is oneounce of cooked meat, skinless chicken orfish. One egg is also aserving.NUTS, SEEDS, DRYBEANS:
Four to five servingsa week. One serving isa third cup of nuts, 2tablespoons of peanutbutter, a half a cup ofdry beans.FATS AND OILS:
Two to three servingsa day, with a servingbeing equal to 1 table-spoon of low-fat may-onnaise, 1 teaspoon ofmargarine, 1 teaspoonof vegetable oil, 2tablespoons of saladdressing.SWEETS:
Five or less a week. Aserving is a tablespoonof sugar or a teaspoon
of jam or jelly. The booklet on high
blood pressureexplains what it is andhow it's treated. Read-ers can order a copy bywriting: Dr. Donohue— No. 104W, Box536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475. Enclose acheck or money order(no cash) for $4.75with the recipient'sprinted name andaddress. Please allowfour weeks for delivery.
DEAR DR. DONO-HUE: I have osteo-porosis. I was put onActonel (risedronate)by my former doctor. My new doctor had meswitch to Fosamax(alendronate) when itcame out as a generic. This doctor says youmust take vitamin D
and calcium also. Arethey necessary? — B.G.
ANSWER: They arenecessary. They workhand in hand withosteoporosis medi-cines. Calcium is themineral needed forstrong bones. VitaminD enhances theabsorption of calciumfrom the digestive tractinto the blood.
Not having a supplyof these two is like try-ing to build a sandcas-tle without sand.

With so many seafood choices it can be difficult toknow how to pick the freshest catch. Here are some tips toensure you're choosing the best at your next visit to themarket or fish counter:
• Milk Does a Salmon Good — Milk tenderizes salmonand removes any frostbite or fishy taste, so try defrostingsalmon in a container of milk for a fresher flavor.
• Float On, Mussels — Mussels love to float. If a musselsinks to the bottom of a container filled with water, throwit away — it's a sign of a bad mollusk.
• "R" for Really Fresh — Oysters taste best when theyare harvested during colder weather. For a good rule ofthumb, enjoy them during months with an "R" in thename, for example, September through April.
• In the Red — Quality tuna should be deep red with no"rainbow" coloring, which is a sign of old fish.

Practical Money Matters
Don’t get ‘spoofed’ by rogue callersBY JASON ALDERMANCONTRIBUTING WRITER
When caller ID firstarrived on the scene itseemed like a godsend tomany people: Now youcould easily identify whowas on the line andignore unwanted calls, whether from telemar-keters, an ex-boyfriendor an unfriendly collec-tion agency.
But as often happens, unscrupulous individu-als soon began manipu-lating the technology todefraud people by pre-tending to be someoneelse. Their scheme iscalled "caller ID spoof-ing" and disturbingly, it'sperfectly legal in manycases.
Here's how caller IDspoofing works and whatprecautions you shouldtake to avoid being vic-timized:
For a very low cost, businesses and individu-als can use widely avail-able caller ID spoofingsoftware to generate callsthat alter the telephonenumber and/or namewhich appear on therecipient's caller IDscreen.
Police, private investi-gators and collectionagencies have used legalspoofing services formany years. Others whomight have a legitimatereason to hide theiridentity when making acall include domesticviolence victims anddoctors returning patientcalls who don't wish torelease their private tele-phone numbers.
Beyond that, the linesof legality begin to blur. The Truth in Caller IDAct of 2009 prohibitsanyone from transmit-ting misleading or inac-curate caller ID informa-tion with the intent todefraud, cause harm or
wrongfully obtain any-thing of value. Violatorscan be penalized up to$10,000 for each infrac-tion. Unfortunately, suchpenalties haven't dis-suaded many scammers.
One common scaminvolves spoofers pre-tending to represent abank, governmentagency, insurer, creditcard company or otherorganization with whichyou do business. Theycount on you being reas-sured after recognizingthe company's name onyour screen.
Under the pretext ofwarning about an urgentsituation (breachedaccount, late payment, pending insuranceclaim, missed jury dutysummons, etc.), thespoofer will try to coaxyou into revealing per-sonal or account infor-mation, supposedly toverify their records.
Often these are robo-calls, where a recordedvoice asks you to stay onthe line to speak to arepresentative or callanother number formore information. Donot. If you suspect thecall might possibly begenuine, contact thecompany yourself at thetoll-free number foundon your card, accountstatement or the compa-ny's website.
You should never
reveal your full SocialSecurity number, moth-er's maiden name, creditcard number, passwordsor other private informa-tion over the phoneunless you initiated thecall yourself. Someonepossessing such infor-mation could use it togain access to your exist-ing accounts to with-draw or transfer money, raise credit limits orsnoop around yourrecent activity, amongother intrusions.
ID thieves also can useyour personal informa-tion to open new creditaccounts (e.g., creditcards, mortgage or carloan), create a new iden-tity or even obtain a jobfraudulently. Often, youwon't even realize some-thing's wrong until a col-lection agency — or theIRS — starts houndingyou for unpaid bills ortaxes.
Another commoncaller ID spoof involveshacking into someone'svoice mail account. Many cellphone usersnever bother to set uppasswords on their voicemailboxes. And, sincemany voicemail systemsgrant access to callersphoning from their ownnumber, a hacker couldeasily spoof your num-ber and gain access toyour messages.
Bottom line: Youwouldn't give your per-sonal information to astranger on the street.Take the same level ofprecaution withstrangers on the phone –or online.

Gardening Time
Five creative ways to use containers in your landscape
BY MELINDA MYERSCONTRIBUTING WRITER
Container gardens have long been usedto add a spot of color by a front entranceor expand planting space in city lots, bal-conies and decks. Don’t let past experi-ence and tradition limit your vision. Tryone or more of these attractive, fun andfunctional ways to include containers inyour landscape, large or small.
Vertical interestAdd vertical interest to any garden or
garden space. Select a large attractive con-tainer filled with tall plants like papyrusand canna. Or elevate a small pot on step-pers or an overturned pot for addedheight. Create height with smaller potsand plants by strategically stacking andplanting them into a creative planting. Trysetting any of these planters right in thegarden to create a dramatic focal point.
ScreeningCreate a privacy screen or mask a bad
view. Use an arbor or other support forhanging baskets and then place a few con-tainers below for an attractive screen. Orcreate a garden of containers to provideseasonal interest using a variety of plants.Use trees, shrubs, and ornamental grassesfor height. Save money by purchasingsmaller plants. Elevate these on over-turned pots for added height and impact.Mask the mechanics by wrapping the potsin burlap. Then add a few colorful self-watering pots in the foreground for addedcolor and beauty. Fill these with annualsor perennials for additional seasonal inter-est.
Easy does it!Bring the garden right to your back door
for ease of harvest and added entertain-ment. A self-watering patio planter, win-dowbox, or rail planter reduces mainte-nance and makes harvesting herbs as easyas reaching out the window or backdoor.Plus, guests will have fun harvesting their
own fresh mint for mojitos or greens fortheir salads.
Define spaceDefine outdoor living spaces within
your landscape. Use containers as wallsand dividers to separate entertaining andplay areas from quiet reflective spaces. And consider using pots with built in cast-ers or set them on moveable saucers tomake moving these pots easier. This wayyou can expand and shrink individualspaces as needed simply by moving thepots.
TransformationCreate your own vacation paradise. Use
planters filled with cannas, bananas, palms and New Zealand flax for a moretropical flare. Add some wicker furnitureto complete the scene. Or fill vertical gar-dens, an old child’s wagon, metal colanderor wooden and concrete planters withcacti and succulents. Add some oldbranches and large stones. You’ll feel asthough you’ve hiked into the desert.
All you need is a bit of space and cre-ativity to find fun new ways to put con-tainers to work for you in the garden thisseason.

Tips to help choose a small pet for your family(Family Features) It's fun for
parents to surprise childrenwith new small pets, likeguinea pigs and hamsters.Plus, these small animals are agreat first pet for kids and canteach children responsibility. But before adding to the fami-ly, it's important to make sureyou are bringing home theright pet for your family.
"Small pets are great, playfulnew pals. And the best way forfamilies to choose a pet and
make them part of your homeis to consider how the pet isgoing to fit into your lives,"says Dr. Kemba Marshall, vet-erinarian and pet care expertat PetSmart.
Take some time to learn howto best care for your small petbefore you bring it home.Make sure you:
Choose the right habitat:Small pet habitats have varyingrequirements, and there aremust-have supplies and acces-
sories to keep your pet happyand healthy. For example, guinea pigs are easy to tame, affectionate and expressive, and need plenty of floor spaceto play. Hamsters, which areknown for being playful andactive, need a multilevel habi-tat large enough to include anexercise wheel and tunnels.
Understand the pet's habits:Some small pets are nocturnaland are most likely to be activeat night — which means you
might not get as much daytimeplay time as you like. Askabout special care needs foryour small pet, too. Chin-chillas, which are known fortheir especially soft fur, needdust baths to clean themselves, and Syrian hamsters requiregrooming products like brush-es and wipes help them lookand smell good.
Provide proper nutrition:Each animal has its own nutri-tional needs. Guinea pigs and
chinchillas are herbivores sothey need diets that include atleast 75 percent high-fiber hay.Guinea pigs also need vitaminC supplements. Many rodents'teeth never stop growing, soproviding wood chews or edi-ble houses offers not only ayummy surprise but also helpskeep teeth trimmed.
