ASAQS SALARY SURVEY 2011
Please note: although the deadline to get your feedback was on Friday you can still submit your data ifyou do so now ! It will only take a minute of your time if you do it on the website by clicking here. Onlyparticipants will get the valuable report compiled from this data.
An annual survey of salaried staff is conducted amongst firms in order to determine the hourly rate forprincipals, partners, members of close corporations and directors. As such principals are notnecessarily allocated a salary, different categories of salaried personnel are used as a basis, with afactor added in order to arrive at an hourly rate.
Please be assured that only the Executive Director of the Association of SA Quantity Surveyors hasaccess to the individual returns, thus absolute confidentiality is assured.
As soon as feedback is returned from the firms, this information is handed over to a firm of statisticalanalysts who are commissioned to capture the information and compute the results to finally arrive atan hourly rate. Clearly the better the response from the firms, the more reliable and representative theresults will become. A special appeal is therefore made to all member firms to please assist theAssociation with this important survey by setting aside a little time to complete the questionnaire andreturning same (preferably in electronic format) to the offices of the Association. The deadline is Friday24th June 2011.

These are just some of the questions being asked when we visited re-vamped Internet-answer site athttp://www.trueknowledge.com The new layout is simple and lively with an increased emphasis onsocial elements. Speech bubbles pop up showing you what people are asking. Answers were based onover 606 million facts during our visit but the number ticks over while you are on the home page asnew facts are added. A tab at the side of the home page allows visitors to easily add their own facts.
We also liked the browser plugin that enhances search results in Google, Yahoo and a couple of othersearch engines.

Dear members,
Below are some of the issues discussed at the last board meeting held on 19 May 2011 for yourinformation.
Executive Director Position as well as new EduTec managerAn advertisement will be placed for the position of Executive Director as well as new EduTec Managerfor the ASAQS. Any member who is interested could apply for the position. These positions will soonbe advertised on the website as well.
Data baseInvestigations to look at appointing a private company to compile and manage the data base of ASAQSmembers is in progress. This is currently receiving the ongoing attention of the Board and Exco,following years of problems experienced by using two systems, one for billing and the other foradministration.
ASAQS office sub-lettingThe need was identified for more area to be sub-let the current tenants and an agreement has beenreached which will result in additional income from under utilized area. This will be completed in June.
Reciprocity agreementA reciprocity agreement will be signed by the President of the ASAQS with the Canadian Institute ofQuantity Surveyors in Sri Lanka at the PAQS congress which takes place between 23 – 26 July 2011.
JBCCProf Tinus Maritz was nominated to serve as board member on the JBCC committee on behalf of theASAQS and their members.
ICEC CongressThe 8th ICEC World Congress will take place on 23 – 27 June 2012. The ASAQS will be the host inDurban and welcome any sponsorships. Please contact Deon Vermeulen on 021-5519711 in regard tothis.
Built Environment Profession [BEP] actResearch is being done and preparations are being made to investigate with various parties theproposed BEP act which will definitely effect our profession. Anyone with additional insight and/or firmopinions should forward this to the Director of ASAQS.
Municipalities / Local authoritiesThe ASAQS wants to target municipalities, local authorities as well as the housing market as new

opportunities for its members. The ASAQS Board and Chapters are currently busy with this and Boardmembers have been tasked investigate avenues.
BursariesThe ASAQS wants to encourage post graduate studies with a bursary every year for a student and aadjudication method will be completed this year.
Cape Homemakers Expo Members in the Western Cape will be allowed to enter the Cape Homemakers Expo at the beginningof September free of charge with an e-ticket which will be provided to them by the ASAQS.

ESTATE AGENTS BOARD EXEMPTION
An Equivalency (Exemptions) Matrix has been constructed by the EAAB as a living document, for thepurposes of granting recognition to relevant qualifications previously obtained by candidates after aproper assessment process.
In the case of Quantity Surveyors, the exemption comes as a BScQS. This exempts candidates holdingthe qualification from doing the NQF qualification courses.
In order to get the exemption the candidate submits a certified copy of ID, qualification (degree) andtranscripts to the MDI T/A Oxford Institute (Tel: 011 646 8491 Fax: 086 538 7514Email: [email protected]) and they issue the candidate with an exemption certificate.Cost is R1000. This certificate is then submitted to the Board by the candidate.

the South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors (Safcec) economist Henk Langenhovensaid that, after a 37% decline in industry turnover in 2010, indicators now showed an increase of 2%was possible in 2011. However, he warned that profit margins in the industry were still very tight andthat heavy fines from the Competition Commission, which announced in February it had found evidenceof 65 bid-rigging cases in the construction industry, might have a significant impact on turnover for2011.
