A Message from Our Pastor Fr. Gregory Spencer

Last week, as you know, we heard the familiar story about Jesus walking on the water and how the disciples’ confessed that Jesus is the Son of God for the first time. After this Gospel passage, Jesus had words with the scribes and Pharisees about the Jewish purity laws. That is where we pick up today’s Gospel for this Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Knowing about Jesus’ debate with the Pharisees helps us to

understand today’s Gospel. In fact, the story heightens the surprise and shock we feel when we hear Jesus’ exchange with the Canaanite woman in today’s Gospel. The woman, who is not Jewish, approaches Jesus, requesting that he heal her demon-possessed daughter. At first Jesus ignores her; he says nothing. The disciples ask Jesus to send her away, and Jesus agrees, remarking that he was sent to minister to the Jews alone.

Then the woman persists, paying homage to Jesus, and yet

Jesus denies her request again. But the woman persists all the more. Only then does Jesus grant her request and heals her daughter.

Jesus’ unresponsiveness to this woman may strike us as

uncharacteristic or shocking. Yet in Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus’ ministry is directed primarily to the people of Israel. At only a very few points, such as the one found in today’s Gospel, do we find Jesus anticipating the later Christian ministry to the rest of the world.

Behind Matthew’s text we can hear this early Christian

community’s struggle to understand how God’s selection of Israel is consistent with two events: Israel’s rejection of Jesus and the Gentiles’ acceptance of Jesus. Just as Jesus was surprised by the faith expressed by the Canaanite woman, so too the first Christians were surprised that the Gentiles would receive the salvation God offered through Christ. In today’s second reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans, we hear the apostle Paul considering this same concern. The faith that the Canaanite woman expresses is an affirmation of and confidence in God’s abundant mercy and love. Yes, salvation comes through Israel, but it also overflows into the world for the benefit of all.

Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, Fr. Greg

This year the Solemnity Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, falls on Saturday, August 15th. It is normally a Holy Day of Obligation, but since it falls on a Saturday, it is a Holy Day without the Obligation. Under these circumstances it is permissible to have the Saturday evening Mass for the Assumption, but Sunday is celebrated as the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. This way, either Mass you attend (whether on Saturday evening or Sunday), your obligation is fulfilled. But also please remember, that since we are still in Phase 2 of the restrictions of the Covid pandemic, our Bishop has dispensed with Sunday’s Obligation. I encourage everyone to reflect on both readings of the day (for the Assumption and Sunday) as this will give you the rich nourishment of the soul in hearing the Word of God.

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 16: 13-20 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16: 15-16)

Living the Word: I have always loved this question that Jesus asks his disciples, and is also asking us today! Who do you say that I Am? Talk about St. Peter and see what your children might know about him. If they don’t know a lot, teach them some facts about Peter. Look him up in the Gospels! Show your children where to find him in our Catholic story. St. Peter is the Church’s first pope. Who is our current pope? How does he continue Jesus’ work today? In 2016, Pope Francis wrote Amoris Laetitia to show the church on how to care for families. Look it up and read it! Discuss with your spouse how you are raising your children to be Christians. How does your family teach Christian values?

Questions of the Week: Child: What has your pastor, your parents, your entire family, and your teachers, taught you about Jesus? Adult: Which church leader has most influenced your personal faith?

Fun Facts for Catholic Kids: On August 20th, we celebrate the Feast of St. Bernard. And history tells us he was a very persuasive person! We he decided to become a priest, Bernard talked 31 of his friends and relative (including 4 of his brothers) into go-ing with him. And they ALL became priests!

If you wanted to talk to someone into becoming a priest, what would you say?

Respect Life News— A Tragic Decision

On June 29, the U.S. Supreme Court on a 5-4 vote in "June Med. Services v. Russo" overturned a Louisiana law that required abortion clinics to meet the same standards as every other ambulatory surgical center in the state. Katrina Jackson, who authored the legislation and who is pro-life, noted that the Court in this tragic decision continued to put the interests of the for-profit abortion industry ahead of the health and safety of women. Her legislation was not an attack on the legality of abortion but an attempt to require abortion clinics to meet the same health standards as the rest of the medical profession. As Ms. Jackson asks-why should we settle for lower standards for women, especially when many women are coerced or abandoned to the trauma of abortion? Response to yet another capitulation to the abortion industry was quick and direct by those who value all life. Among the respondents was Archbishop Joseph Naumann (KS). The archbishop's comments called attention to the fact that abortion "violently ends the life of a child , and often severely harms women. Abortion becomes even more destructive when basic health and safety standards are ignored, and profit margins are prioritized over women's health." He also stated "The Court's failure to recognize the legitimacy of laws prioritizing women's health and safety over abortion business interests continues a cruel precedent." He went on to say we will not rest until the Supreme Court corrects the grave injustice over the Roe decision and recognizes the Constitutional right to life for unborn human beings. He concluded "And we continue to ask all people of faith to pray for women seeking abortion, often under enormous pressure, that they will find alternatives that truly value them and the lives of their children." (Sources: Numerous).

Please visit www.prolifealliance.com and sign the petition for the Life at Conception Act. This Act follows the Court's own instructions that leave it to Congress to define exactly when Human life--and constitutionally-protected "personhood"--actually begins. This legislation would declare unborn children to be persons as defined by the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, thus entitling them to legal protection. Thank you so much for your strong support for the precious unborn babies.

Carolina Catholic meets Father James Altman, one of the three priests leading the 40 day novena, Let Freedom Ring, online this summer.

For our second August show, we will meet one of the three priests hosting Let Freedom Ring, 40 Days to Freedom from the devil, a 40 day novena which began July 7th and ends August 15th when a new novena will commence. The next novena, the 54 day Novena for Our Nation, begins August 15th and runs to October 7th.

This beautiful show will air on Wilmington Catholic Radio on stations 91.7 FM, 93.1 FM, and 103.1 FM in Wilmington and 100.5 FM in Southport the last two weekends of August, Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. That's Saturday, August 22nd and 29th, at 11 a.m. and Sunday, August 23rd and 30th, at 6 p.m. These shows can also be heard on our website at www.wilmingtoncatholicradio.com, and we thank you for your prayers and support of Catholic radio.
