Jeremiah is directed by God to tell the people in exile
that those who remained faithful to God will be
gathered and returned home to Jerusalem. For us
Christians, we see a much bigger picture, a return to
heaven. The remnant consists of the lame, the blind
and mothers without husbands, not the kind of people
you would expect by worldly standards. These are the
people God looks after because they know how
dependent they are upon God and they trust Him.
In the Gospel, Bartimaeus calls to Jesus for help, but
the people rebuke him. He, being blind, bears some
stigma which the worldly people find
distasteful. Bartimaeus is not really blind. He is only
sightless. He sees better with his heart than many of
those around him because he has faith in Jesus and
perceives Jesus as the Son of David. He cherishes the
hope that his faith gives him. Jesus says, “Go your
way. Your faith has saved you.” Once Jesus cures him,
Bartimaeus follows Jesus.
The Letter to the Hebrews addresses the priesthood of
Jesus Christ as the way to holiness. The Church
teaches that there are two kinds of priesthood, the
common and the ministerial. They are ordained for
each other and they both share in the one priesthood
of Jesus Christ.
The common royal priesthood is symbolized by
anointing with Chrism at Baptism and Confirmation. It
is exercised by receiving the sacraments worthily, in
prayer, thanksgiving, witness of holy lives, self-denial
and acts of charity.
Ministerial priesthood, in addition to the common
priesthood, instructs and rules the priestly people. The
ordained priest acts in the Person of Christ when
administering the Sacraments, especially the
Eucharist.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation requires the
confession of sins to a priest. This is not new. John
the Baptist was listening to sinners confess their sins
at the Jordan. Jesus said, “Whose sins you shall
forgive, they are forgiven.” How can a priest know what
to forgive when he does not know what they are? God
has chosen to use human beings, priests and bishops,
in this capacity. Its practice gives a firm experience of
being forgiven by God provided the penitent has faith.
No mortal sin can be forgiven outside of the Sacrament
of Penance, unless one is actively pursuing the
reception of the sacrament and is prevented from
doing so. “Let us recall our sins” at the beginning of
Mass is a time to see if our reception of Holy
Pastor’s Notes Communion is worthy. Receiving Holy Communion
with an unconfessed mortal sin inflicts another mortal
sin called sacrilege. This penitential rite does not
forgive mortal sins. It only serves as a warning to
remind us of the danger of sacrilege.
New regulations from the NJ Department of Education
clarify that public school students can “identify” as any
gender they choose and schools do not have to inform
their parents. The gender decision rests with the
student and not the parents. The NJ public schools
must use the preferred name and pronouns in verbal,
written and electronic communications. Students
must be allowed to participate in athletics in a manner
consistent with their self-described gender
identity. Students can access restrooms, locker rooms
and changing facilities according to their gender
identity. SVS will not collaborate in this legal fiction.
Fr. Euk
"What do you want me to do for you?" Have you ever encountered a once in a life-time opportunity
you knew you could not pass up? Such a moment came for
a blind and destitute man, named Bartimaeus. He was
determined to get near the one person who could meet his
need. He knew who Jesus was and had heard of his fame
for healing, but until now had no means of making contact
with the Son of David, a clear reference and title for the
Messiah.
Seeking Jesus with effort and persistence pays off It took a lot of "guts" (courage) and persistence for
Bartimaeus to get the attention of Jesus over the din of a
noisy throng who crowded around Jesus as he made his way
out of town. Why was the crowd annoyed with the blind
man's persistent shouts? He was disturbing their peace and
interrupting Jesus' discourse. It was common for a rabbi to
teach as he walked with others. Jesus was on his way to
celebrate the Passover in Jerusalem and a band of pilgrims
followed him. When the crowd tried to silence the blind
man, he overpowered them with his emotional outburst and
thus caught the attention of Jesus.
Goodness and mercy follows those who put their trust
in God
This incident reveals something important about how God
interacts with us. The blind man was determined to get
Jesus' attention and he was persistent in the face of
opposition. Jesus could have ignored or rebuffed him
because he was disturbing his talk and his audience. Jesus
showed that acting was more important than talking. This
man was in desperate need and Jesus was ready, not only
to empathize with his suffering, but to relieve it as well. A
great speaker can command attention and respect, but a
man or woman with a helping hand and a big heart is loved
more.
