Captain Marvel Premiere

It's Superhero time once again! Pitt Program Council is hosting a showing of Captain Marvel at Southside Works Cinema. Tickets are on sale for $10 and deadline to buy tickets is Wednesday, March 6th. The $10 ticket includes your movie ticket/admission, small sized popcorn and drink, and transportation to the SouthSide Works Cinema and back to the William Pitt Union. Buses will leave the William Pitt Union at 9:00 P.M. and are expected to return to the William Pitt Union around 12:30 A.M. You must ride the bus to Southside Works Cinema and back to the William Pitt Union. All Pitt Program Council events are open to all undergraduate Pitt students with a valid (Oakland) Student ID.

ELI Writing Contest The ELI is holding a competition for students in all writing classes. There will be one winner in each level (3,4,5,6), and the winners will be announced at the ELI Closing Ceremony.

If you have written a good composition in your writing class this semester, you should tell your writing teacher that you would like to enter it in the writing contest. Your teacher will then submit your paper for you. Your entry will be read anonymously by judges (your name will be removed from the paper, so they won’t not know who you are). The judges will choose the best composition from each level.

The deadline for entries is Thursday, April 4 at 12:00 pm.

If you are in level 4, 5, or 6, your entry must be an essay that you wrote in class this semester. If you are in level 3, your entry can be a shorter composition, even a single paragraph. Each student can enter only one composition.

Good luck!

ELI Activity:

Board Games with APO

Deadline Today! Are you tired of playing nonsense games on your phone? Are you looking for a more compelling game in which you can interact with others in person and practice your English skills? If so, then join the ELI and APO for an entertaining afternoon of playing board games on Wednesday, March 6, from 2:00-3:30 pm! We will meet in the William Pitt Union, Dining Room B, which is located on the 2nd floor. If you are not familiar with American board games, don’t worry! The ELI has partnered with Alpha Phi Omega (APO), which is a service fraternity at the University of Pittsburgh. Members of APO will teach you how to play a variety of board games. Chess, Apples to Apples, and Monopoly are just three examples of the disparate board games played in the USA. These games are called board games because many of them are played with some kind of board. In some games you have a marker that you move around the board based on the number you roll with a pair of dice. Some board games, however, don’t have a board at all. There are games in which you draw a card and have to describe, illustrate, or act out the word on the card. Then your team members must extrapolate what the word is. Some board games are more challenging than others, but the objective of this activity is not to win, but to have fun trying something new and meeting new people! This a great way to have a cultural experience and practice your speaking and listening skills with native English speakers! This activity is open to ELI students studying in the Intensive English Program or the Evening Course. The event is free, but you must pre-register by 4 pm on Thursday, February 28 at tinyurl.com/Games2194. Contact Ece at [email protected] if you have any questions.

F1 Students and Part Time Study

Students with F1 visas have the benefit of taking a vacation term for part time study. If you have studied full time at the ELI for two semesters, you can choose to take a break next semester or to study part time. You may only take one vacation term during your study at the ELI.

Please remember that you must pre-register for this benefit during pre-registration. You cannot change to a vacation term after the term starts. There are no exceptions to this rule. The deadline for choosing a vacation term or part time study for F1 students is April 2, 2019.

Also, please remember that Saudi and Kuwaiti students who are sponsored by their governments are not allowed to study part time because of sponsor rules. If you are a sponsored student and would like to study part time, you must provide a letter of permission from your sponsor before April 2. This letter must be in English. The ELI does not make these requests for students; you must speak to your sponsor yourself.

At No Bake, students will be making 3 different desserts that require no baking. All ingredients and cooking materials will be provided. Tickets are $5 and are limited to two tickets per person. All Pitt Program Council events are open to all undergraduate Pitt students with a valid (Oakland) Student ID. Saturday, March 2 at 10:00 p.m. to 11:55 p.m.

ELI Activity:

Language Music Club

What do the artists Fools Garden, One Republic, Taylor Swift, and Panic! at

the Disco have in common? We listened to their songs and practiced vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar in the Language Music Club! The meetings of the Language Music Club include diverse activities to help you improve your English skills. We also have discussions on what these songs mean. These activities are not too challenging, so your motivation to learn English will increase rather than diminish. You might feel too timid to sing along, but everyone is practicing together in a stress-free environment. The Language Music Club usually meets every Tuesday from 1-1:45 pm in M15. This room is next to the main office. Feel free to bring your lunch! We have had four meetings so far, but you can drop in anytime. Stop postponing and join us! No musical talent is required. All you need is a positive attitude and a desire to improve your English! This activity is open to all ELI students, including CCC students. For more information or to make song suggestions, please contact Ece at [email protected].

DIY Sushi Night

Friday, March 1 from 10:00 pm to 11:55 pm, come roll sushi with Pitt Program Council and Sushi Fuku for DIY Sushi Night! At the William Pitt Union, Ballroom (3959 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15260), you can pick 2 out of the 3 rolls (raw, cooked, or vegetarian) and try your hand at crafting sushi while learning about its history! Tickets are $5 each and are limited to two tickets per person. All Pitt Program Council events are open to all undergraduate Pitt students with a valid (Oakland) Student ID.

ELI Activity:

ELI NIGHT Calling all

performers! Get ready for one of the most highly anticipated activities in the ELI! ELI Night will be held on Saturday, March 23 from 5-8 pm in the basement hall of the First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh at 159 North Bellefield Ave. ELI Night is a potluck dinner for ELI students and teachers, Talk Time leaders, conversation partners, and their families and friends. At a potluck dinner, everyone brings a dish to share. The dish should be enough to feed you and your guests and approximately 6-8 others. There is always a diverse selection of delicious food to select from. You will not leave hungry! To compensate guests for their hard work preparing food, after dinner, ELI students and teachers sometimes perform. If you feel compelled to sing, dance, or play an instrument for us at ELI Night, please let Ece know by Thursday, March 7, so that she can plan accordingly. The First Baptist Church has a piano that they will let us use. If you are too timid to perform alone, get your classmates together and perform something as a group! Email Ece at [email protected] if you are interested in performing. She will respond to confirm your performance. You should plan to arrive at the church at 5 pm. Dinner will be served at 5:30 pm. If you arrive after this time, you will miss out on a great deal of delicious food! If you have any questions, please contact Ece at [email protected].

“Icy Lights” Block Party

Tomorrow! On Friday, March 1, from 4:00-10:00 pm, the Oakland Business Improvement District (OBID) is hosting a winter-themed block party called “Icy Lights.” This event will be held outside on Oakland Avenue, between Forbes Avenue and Sennott Street. A block party is a party held in the street. Usually this kind of party is for the people living in that neighborhood, but this block party is free and open to the public! This event will showcase Oakland’s newest festival-style lighting installation, which spans across Oakland Avenue. The celebration will include fun and exciting entertainment, including live bands, a DJ, and live ice carving. In addition, for the first time in Pittsburgh, there will be street curling competitions! Curling is a sport played on ice, in which players slide flat heavy stones towards a marked place. Visit tinyurl.com/curling2018 to watch some clips of curling competitions from the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang last year. Students from the University of Pittsburgh who are competent curling players will be at the “Icy Lights” event to teach curling technique. You can even organize a team and challenge another group, but competing is not mandatory. You can also watch and cheer on the teams from the sidelines. A very special matchup is also scheduled between Iceburgh, the mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team, and Roc. What do you think the outcome will be? Most of us are probably biased to think our beloved University of Pittsburgh mascot will emerge as the victor. Between participating in all of the activities, OBID invites the guests of “Icy Lights” to take a break in warming lounge areas while sipping on a complimentary beverage. Additional food and beverages will be available for purchase. Each hour, OBID will announce prize giveaways, such as tickets to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. If you are available on March 1, you should not have wavering doubts about attending this event! For more information about this event, visit onlyinoakland.org/events/icy-lights

ELI Storytellers Series

One of the benefits of studying at the ELI is the chance to meet and to

learn from people with diverse backgrounds and experience. The ELI Storytellers Series gives students an opportunity to share their stories with classmates. Speakers give a 10-15 minute presentation, followed by a question and answer period. The talks are scheduled during the 1:00 lunch break or after classes at 4:00. The series is open to all ELI students, and it is a great way to get extra speaking and listening practice outside of class. Your English doesn’t have to be perfect! This is a great opportunity to challenge yourself and share your story with your friends, teachers and classmates.

How about you? Do you have an interest or a skill you would like to tell us about? Have you accomplished something special or done something fun and exciting? Would you like to share information about your culture or hometown? What is your story? If you are interested in giving a short presentation, email Heather at [email protected].

ELI Idiom of the Week

An idiom is a phrase or expression whose meaning might not always be clear from the words that make it up.

“You can’t judge a book by its cover.”

Meaning:Decisionoropinionaboutsomeoneorsomethingshouldnotbebasedsolelyonoutwardappearance.

For example: “Pineapple, a delicious fruit, never appealed to Hamza because of its hard and spiky exterior. However, a friend of his cut a slice for him to eat the other day, and Hamza quickly learned that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.”
