A place where WOMEN learn and work together to develop their SOCIAL, SPIRITUAL, ECONOMIC, and POLITICAL POTENTIAL.

Do you find yourself recalling the early days, when you had little money, a one room apartment with hardly any furniture, an old car, and hardly any money in your bank

account? Some of my more affluent friends refer to these days among the happiest they’ve ever been. Yet, simplicity is something we don’t strive for instead we work on accumulating things. I was fortunate to learn at a young age that money and things don’t define who I am. Having been married to a very affluent Arab who showed me how people could easily be bought and owned by the very things they possessed, money became pretty unimportant to me other than a way to take care of my basic needs. It was quite shocking to everyone around me when I walked away from the marriage with my first born son and nothing more than the clothes I was wearing. No matter how much money or things you accumulate, you won’t be able to take it with you. There are no moving vans or armored trucks in a funeral procession.

One day, while watching my sons skateboarding on a closed road, I noticed how caught up in the moment they were, as they maneuvered their skateboards down the mountain. There they were close to home with their skateboards enjoying the wind on their faces speeding down the hill under the evening sky—pure simplicity. Life is simple. By downsizing, one can enjoy the simple pleasures of a sunrise, the beautiful colors of nature, the taste of food, laughing at jokes, freshly fallen snow, intimate conversation, breakfast in bed, a good book, a flower in bloom. Whenever Carter’s love for things threatens my simple way of life, I would find ways to simplify by getting him to donate the items he was replacing. I still do that except all donations now go to the Center. Don’t let stuff hold you back from looking deeply into what is important in your life. Take stock, downsize and keep it simple. I have...and teach our participants to do so as well. Simply Simplifying,

Getting Rid of a Cold Fast With Reflexology Our executive director, Mary Carter, came down with a cold from the crazy weather we’ve been having. The Reflexology class brought her into the healing arts room to help her get rid of the cold. Mary exclaimed, “You can get rid of cold through reflexology!” Everyone in the room responded with loud “Yes!” and they got to work on her feet. Chinese Reflexology Point #4: Throat

The Conchita Candelas, Reflexology Instructor, explained to Mary and her students the following, “Similar to how you combine vitamins to strengthen their effectiveness, massaging the throat reflex point in addition to the tonsil/throat point really helps turbocharge the clearing of energy in the throat, neck, and cervical lymph nodes. In other words, get rid of a sore throat faster.” Conchita used Mary’s feet as an example for her class as she pointed out to them where to locate the point, “It’s right at the tip of the webbing between your big toe and the second toe. Use the knuckle of your index finger to massage this point with a digging and twisting motion.” “Use your other hand to gently hold the two toes together while you rub this point. Massage for about 20 seconds.” Conchita said to her students as she observed them working on each other’s feet. According to Conchita the last reflexology point that can help you get rid of a cold faster is the lymph drainage point for your armpits. When your pits are sweaty, your body is actually cleaning house.

The lymphatic system is the overlooked and underappreciated worker in your body. While your heart and blood vessels are grabbing the limelight, the lymphatic system is diligently transporting white blood cells throughout your body and clearing out waste materials. Chinese Reflexology Point #5: Lymph Drainage

Your heart pumps the blood through your circulatory system, but the only way lymph fluid gets moved around is when YOU move around. Mary found this point slightly painful. “How long have you been sitting here in front of your computer without moving?” Conchita asked Mary. She told her massaging this point will give her lymphatic system a great energy boost and writhing in pain will also help move lymph fluid through her body. “This reflexology point is located in the webbing between the bones of your big toe and second toe. To massage this point, use the knuckle of your index finger. Press as hard as hard as you can tolerate from the base of your toes towards the point of the V that’s formed where the bones meet. Lift up your knuckle and place it back at the base of your toes and stroke downwards again. Repeat for 30 strokes.” said Conchita as she demonstrated the move to her students. Please note that in order for this to work you must take care of yourself and continue to give yourself reflexology until the cold is gone.

Every year, WInC partners with the Community Action Agency to provide free tax preparation services to the rural communities of Southern NM from February through April. They offer the same services as a commercial tax site such as e-file, direct deposit, ITIN preparation, federal and state preparation, 1040 X (amended returns). All their tax preparers are certified and can file returns that include Income Tax Credit (EITC), expanded education credits and all other credits that an individual may qualify for. The services are provided at WInC on Wednes-days and Fridays from 1 to 4 pm through April 12. Services are provided on a first come first served basis for 25 people per day. The Center receives an overwhelming demand for assistance as people begin lining up at our doors at 5am if not earlier. Allocating the 25 slots is the first thing in the morning that we do in order to disburse the huge number of people from our doors to continue our regular operations. Preference is given to disabled individuals and then the people who are at the front of the line are then given the remaining slots. Many people who line up at our doors and do not make the cut become upset and argumentative. They believe we should allocate more spaces, we explain to them that we wish we could; however, it is not our decision as we are only the facilitators. Others become upset because we give priority to the disabled and quite honestly, it is the most humane thing to do to ensure that they are taken care of given their disability. For us providing this service to the community has a dual sword. We know it is needed and hence is the reason why we provide it. However, staff and volunteers have to make a great effort to remain calm, respectful and professional when people are yelling and complaining at them for something that is beyond their control. In spite of the challenges we strive to educate others beyond our WInC community to appreciate the service that is being provided to them by continuing to politely explain the process and reminding them that they are receiving free services.
