Monday Mathletics and Maths No Problem

Maths No Problem Parent Guides. You all should have received an email with account details for you to sign into Maths No Problem. We have included the weeks’ worth of work under this timetable for those of you who cannot log on. These can be printed, answers can be typed next to the worksheets and this document can be saved or you can complete the activities in your own workbook. Feel free to complete it in any way that you prefer. Also feel free to email any work over to share with us.

Recap the difference between past and present tense. Past tense is when you talk or write about something that has already happened. Present tense is when you talk or write about something that is happening right now. The verbs in a sentence tell us whether they are written in past or present tense. These are the actions within a sentence, e.g. I looked at the bug (past tense). I look at the bug (present tense). Look at the activity sheet below this timetable. Circle the verb in each sentence and sort them into two categories: past and present tense.

New spelling activity: See the ‘Common Exception Words Activity Book’ below this timetable. This is a fun, useful way to continue practicing spelling Common Exception Words throughout the week.

Spelling Activity 2: See the Suffix Words sheet below this timetable. Choose 5 words, practice spelling each word and then hide the words and be tested to see if you can remember how the words are spelt. Can you write descriptive sentences with these words in? Move on to different words each day or repeat words that you are making mistakes with to help you to practice more.

PSHE (Relationships topic)Express appreciation towards myself and others. Start off with discussing what a compliment is. It is when someone says or thinks something nice about themselves or someone else. Why is it important to give and receive compliments? How can they make people feel? Please choose what you think will benefit your child the most. This is an important issue that we address in school to help to protect children and keep them safe. Use past tense and present tense correctly. Recap yesterday’s work related to past and present tense. How do we know when a sentence is written in past or present tense? Why is it important to think about the verb/s in a sentence? What is a verb? Complete the two activity sheets below this timetable. Activity 1: filling in the gaps to change sentences to past tense. Activity 2: filling in the gaps to change sentences to present tense. Think carefully about how the verbs change for each sentence. Use expanded noun phrases for description. Recap what expanded noun phrases are. What is a noun? It is a thing. What noun/thing can you describe? What do we call describing words? (Adjectives). Think back to the expanded noun phrases that we have used in school. We list two adjectives in front of a noun and separate the two adjectives with a comma. For example, ‘The beautiful, tiny ladybird is crawling along the stem.’ This is written in present tense but can also be written in past tense: ‘The beautiful, tiny ladybird crawled along the stem.’ Task: Write your own expanded noun phrases about minibeasts. Write and show how to make a local environment suited to minibeasts. What is a local environment? Thinking about minibeasts, it is a place/ habitat where they can live. Choose a habitat/ a place where you would like some minibeasts to live. This can be anywhere you want! What minibeasts would you like to have living there? You don’t have to choose loads, 2 or 3 minibeasts is more than enough. Task: List ideas about what you would need to do to that local environment/ habitat/place you have chosen to make your chosen minibeasts suited to living there. What would they need in terms of food, drink, shelter, safety, comfort? Where can you include expanded noun phrases in your list? Can you write in present tense? Draw what this would look

Write a pledge to care for minibeasts in the local habitat. What is a pledge? It is a promise to do something that is good. Think about minibeasts. Why is it important to care for them? What could we promise to do when we see minibeasts near our home to keep them alive, safe and well? What could we promise not to do when we see minibeasts to also keep them alive, safe and well? Think about why these things are important. Task: Complete a pledge to care for minibeasts in your local habitat/environment/ surroundings. How many ideas can you think of and why are they important to think about?

Write a book review for your favourite book of the week.

This can lead to an interesting conversation about how some minibeasts need to eat other minibeasts in order to survive… Encourage them to focus on their chosen minibeasts and what they need for survival, although it is important to think about how this affects other minibeasts. The children may prefer to choose minibeasts that do not harm other minibeasts!
