Thesis:

Copy the writer’s thesis statement here: (ideally this is the last sentence of the first paragraph)

The thesis statement should mention both of the poems along with the theme the essay is

exploring. Does it? Identify what it doesn’t mention.

Thesis Support:

Read the last sentence of every paragraph. Each should explain how the paragraph has supported

it the writer’s thesis. If it does, write this note to the writer: “Nice return to thesis!” If it does

not, write this note to the writer: “How does this prove your thesis?”(Note to writer: Heed these comments!)

Look at the specific details in each paragraph, and put a plus sign (+) next to the details that yousee which go along with the writer’s thesis. Put a minus sign (-) next to any which don’t, along

with this question: “thesis support?”

Quotes and Examples

Underline or highlight all of the quotes the author is using.

Read the sentence(s) which follow each quote. If the sentence explains and interprets the quote, put a check mark at the end of the sentence. If the sentence does NOT explain and interpret the

quote, put an asterisk.(note to writer: where you see asterisks, you must go back and add explanation!)

Put a box around any paragraph which does not include a quote, and write this note to the writer:“This paragraph needs quotes!”

Note the quotes the writer uses which need a citation.

Note the paraphrases the writer uses which need a citation.

Organization:

Use this space to block out the writer’s paragraphs, clearly noting when he or she discusses thethree (or more) criteria he or she has chosen.

*note to the author – take a look at how your editor has mapped your paragraphs. Did they get what you meant tosay? If not, you need to remedy this. If so, are your points in the best order they can be?
