In March, Braden Payne and Josh Roscarel travelled with Mrs Jackson and Mrs Earney to Dubbo TAFE to attend an

information day for the NSW Schools Merino Wether Challenge, and to pick up Ungarie and Condobolin’s wethers to

take home. Once the wethers arrived safely at school (after travelling through a horrendous dust storm just out of

Condo), they were vaccinated, drenched and treated for external parasites, to make sure they were healthy and ready

to grow. .

Agriculture students introduced the wethers to a ration of all purpose pellets, cracked lupins and oats, along with

Lucerne hay. Students kept the feed up to the wethers for the duration of their stay, regularly weighing them to monitor

their growth. The wethers were halter trained and regularly walked around the ag plot to get them used to being

handled. In the final week of their stay, Josh, Braden, Mrs Jackson and Mr Cattle used their weights and fleece

characteristics to sort them into two teams of three, with a spare. .

On Monday, 26th August, Braden, Josh and Mrs Jackson packed up the wethers, their gear and feed, and headed to

Dubbo Showgrounds, via Condobolin to pick up the Condo wethers and Mrs Earney and her students. Upon arrival at

the Showgrounds, the wethers were given a health check, had a side sample taken and a wool micron analysis. This data

was recorded for use during the challenge. .

On Tuesday, students were all up early to check on the sheep, feed them and get ready for the first day of showing.

Ungarie Central School was in Group 1, and lined up for judging at 7:45am. The wethers were judged on their fleece

characteristics. Josh’s team of three wethers were in the top 10, meaning they had to come back for judging with the

top 10 from Group 2. Unfortunately, our wethers didn’t place in the top 5 in this category. After judging, every team of

sheep were shorn, fleeces weighed and then the wethers were scanned for eye muscle depth. This data was all recorded

to be used to judge the overall winners. .

On Wednesday, students were back out with their teams of three, being judged this time on carcase characteristics and

condition score. Josh’s wether that he was handling was selected to come back for the finals as an individual animal,

and Braden’s team of three wethers were asked to come back in the final judging of the top 20 teams from Groups 1

and 2. In the end, Braden’s team of three were placed fourth in the carcase section, with one of these wethers then

being placed fifith in the individual carcase section. .

The challenge wrapped up on Wednesday afternoon, with junior judging and challenge winners being announced. While

we didn’t place in any of these categories, we did achieve 8th and 14th overall, which was based on the collation of all

our wether data over the two days of competition. Considering there were 90 odd teams in the challenge at Dubbo, this

is something to be very proud of, especially considering this was the first time our school had competed in this challenge.

Thanks to Mrs Earney from Condobolin for helping us with any questions about the competition, including during the

challenge, and also to Lily Spackman, Charlotte Whiley, Jaxon Lemon and Leslie Quarman from West Wyalong High

School for being part of our show team since we had 6 wethers to show with only 2 handlers!

On the 20th of August we went on a bus to Lake Cowal Conservation Centre. When we first arrived we went for a long

bush walk to explore the area and collect treasures to use later. We saw lots of interesting animals such as emus,

wallabies, kangaroos and birds. We were also lucky enough to see emu eggs.

After this we were split into three groups. The first group went to Mrs Payne to sort the treasures collected earlier into

solids, liquids, gasses and things in between.

We then went to Sally Russell and looked at dead bird skulls and beaks to guess what they were, what they ate and

where they lived. We then used beaks to attempt to make a birds nest. This was surprisingly fun and hard.

We enjoyed a lovely lunch of sausages, damper and a fruit box before moving to our final group.

First we had to find camouflaged animals. Next we looked at water animals under a microscope. Seeing them under the

microscope was creepy as we could see all their textures we didn’t know were there!

We had a great day and learnt a lot! By Year 3/4

First we went on the bus, it was long. After that we started to find emu foot prints and then we found emu poo. Finally

we kept walking and we saw big green emu eggs and we saw a big cave. After that we climbed up the big rocks. Next we

came down the big rocks. Finally we hunted for cool treasure. After that we went back on the bus back to the school.

By Isla Rossiter (Kindergarten)

First K/1/2, 3/4 and 5/6 went to Lake Cowal Conservation Centre and talked for a minute.

Next we got to the bush walking and we saw emu poo and emu tracks and you would not believe what Mrs Payne told

us! A huge emu took over her!

K/1/2 saw five nests and after that we saw eight emu eggs on the ground. A Dad emu and two babies ran into the bush.

Next we turned off into the bush and when we were half way up the hill we saw a huge rock as big as a silo and we got

to climb it.

After that we got to find some treasures and Jack and I paired up and found kangaroo poo, two cool rocks, some moss,

a spine bone off a rabbit and a tree branch.

A while later we got back to the bus and came back to the nice warm fire. We had recess and made damper on the fire.
