Working at Home During School Closures- Year 4 WEEK 5 Feel free to dip in and out, but I would recommend doing the MUST, then the SHOULD sections, followed by the COULD section if you have the time/desire. Even during normal school, everyone has differing views on how much home learning primary aged children should have. We are taking a balanced approach to the work we are suggesting, but this is an unprecedented situation and everyone’s main focus is rightl y on family security, health and well-being. Any work suggested by school is not exhaustive and I’m sure you and your children can think of many great and innovative ideas of your own! At the end of this document is some ‘extra work’ for children who want to revise key concepts like phonics and number bonds. TOP TIPS Try to stick to a routine and include plenty of breaks, free time and fun! Drink plenty of water and eat healthily throughout the day. Try to monitor the amount of ‘screen time’ your child has. Working at Home During School Closures- Year 4

WEEK 5

Feel free to dip in and out, but I would recommend doing the MUST, then the SHOULD sections, followed by the

COULD section if you have the time/desire.

Even during normal school, everyone has differing views on how much home learning primary aged children should have. We are taking a balanced approach to the work we are suggesting, but this is an unprecedented situation and everyone’s main focus is rightly on family security, health and well-being. Any work suggested by school is not exhaustive and I’m sure you and your children can think of many great and

innovative ideas of your own!

At the end of this document is some ‘extra work’ for children who want to revise key concepts like phonics and

number bonds.

TOP TIPS

Try to stick to a routine and include plenty of breaks, free time and fun!

Drink plenty of water and eat healthily throughout the day.

Try to monitor the amount of ‘screen time’ your child has. We understand that given the circumstances there may be slightly more of this, but please remember online safety guidance: www.nspcc.org.uk/keeping-children-safe/online-safety/

11. ART. If you have a needle and thread and adult supervision, try making craft cards at: https://www.auntannie.com/Textiles/SewingCards/ 12.MUSIC. Choose one of your favourite songs. Listen to it repeatedly and try to copy down the lyrics. When you think you have the full set of lyrics written down, see if you can change some words and sentences to create your own lyrics to your favourite song. 13. ICT and ART and Design. Science: Ice Cream in a bag in 5 minutes

Make sure you do this with an adult.

Equipment:

Carton of chocolate milk (or any flavour you would like)

Bag of ice

Spoonful of salt

A small sandwich/ ziplock bag

A larger sandwich/ ziplock bag

Gloves (possibly)

Before you start! Write down what you think you will do to turn all that chocolate milk into ice cream in 5 minutes .

I think we will -

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Method (instructions):

Pour all the chocolate milk into the smaller sandwich bag. Make sure it is shut tight.

Pour all the ice into the larger sandwich bag. Feel how cold it is.

Add the spoonful of salt and mix it amongst the ice cubes. What do you notice about how cold they are

now?

Put the chocolate milk bag into the ice bag.

Close the ice bag. Make sure it is shut tight.

Give the ice bag a really, really, good shake. This is where the gloves might be useful because your hands

may get cold.

You need to keep shaking for about five minutes. Time it using a stopwatch or phone.

After 5 minutes, get the milk bag out of the ice bag and check on the consistency. It should be much thicker,

like ice cream. If it’s not quite as thick as ice cream yet, put it back in and keep shaking!

When all the milk has turned into ice cream, you can stop.

Before you eat it! Write down why you think this experiment froze the chocolate milk so quickly. What is the

science behind it?

I think the milk turned into ice cream so quickly because

The science:

The same reason salt is used on icy roads in winter explains why salt is mixed with ice to make ice cream:

Water freezes at 0℃ to become ice. When salt and ice mix, the freezing point of the ice is lowered: the freezing

point reached depends on the amount of salt used. The more salt is added, the lower the temperature can get. For

example, a 10% salt solution freezes at -7℃ and a 20% solution freezes at -17℃.

When salt is added to ice, you should have felt the bag of ice grow colder because the salt was lowering the

temperature. Some of the ice begins to melt because the freezing point has been lowered and it is only at 0℃.

Melting is a reaction and so it needs energy. That energy comes in the form of heat from the surroundings and, in

this case, it’s from the warmer chocolate milk. By lowering the temperature at which ice freezes, you were able to

create an environment in which the chocolate milk could freeze at a temperature below 0℃ and become ice cream.

The shaking moves the milk from the inside to the outside of the bag so it can freeze evenly.
