Safe practices for all concerned!
Year 6 Information
In the past two weeks students in year 6 have received notes for Canberra (deposit) and Year 6 Shirt. If you have any questions please contact your child’s teacher.
Stage 2 Wellbeing Journal
As part of our PDH program, all students in Year 3 and 4 will be participating in activities to strengthen resilience and develop self-esteem. For the first time, we will be using the text “My Wellbeing Journal” to guide our learning. The benefits of keeping a journal have been well documented. It is believed that writing down thoughts can help individuals achieve mental clarity and prioritise worries or fears. This journal will be used over a 2 year period so Year 3 children will not need to re-purchase this again next year. Activities include skill building with self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making. The journal can be
purchased through our office and is included in Term 1 costs. If your child has inadvertently brought it home, please return it to school.
TERM COSTS have been included with this Tallong
Library Buzz…… Hello everyone!
Library borrowing has commenced for the year and students are able to borrow books to enjoy at home each week. Books may be borrowed for a period of up to 2 weeks, after which they should be returned or re-borrowed. The following limits apply for borrowing:
K = 1 book Yrs 1 & 2 = 2 books Yrs 3 & 4 = 3 books Yrs 5 & 6 = 4 books
It is important for all students to have a library bag in order to borrow. A pillow case or calico shopping bags are good alternatives. A library bag helps students transport the borrowed books safely to and from home and also allows students to have a defined location for storing books when at home, to avoid them getting mixed up with family books.
Keeping with our school values of respect, responsibility and care, we do ask that books are well looked after when at home and returned when they are finished or on student library days. We do recognise that sometimes accidents occur or books are misplaced. To help us, we would appreciate it if you could draw our attention to damage or loss regarding any book so that we can continue to stock our library with great resources.
In the last BUZZ, we mentioned giving you clues as to who our guest author will be visiting us in May.
Our first clue is: We have over 40 of this popular Australian author’s books on our shelves.
Happy reading! The Library Teachers

Coming up…
Do you want your child to join Children’s University – University of Newcastle?
Students of Wallsend South Public School, years 2-6 are invited to join children across Newcastle, the Lower Hunter; the Upper Hunter; the Central and Mid North Coast, to be a part of this exciting new education program.
The concept of Children’s University (CU) is to recognise kids that find new areas of learning through discovering what educational events they can go to in their local area. Different levels of awards are given to students for learning time that occurs out of classroom hours: before school, during lunch, after school and at events in the school holidays. Children log this learning in a passport.
There will be a launch assembly on Friday 1 March at 10am in the school hall for interested students and families. The cost for students to be involved in the program is $20 (learning passport, learning activities and open day at Newcastle University in Term 2, access to online learning challenges and finally graduation at the Great Hall at Newcastle University in Term 4 – wearing cap and gown). If you would like a permission note, please contact Mr Naylor. This is not compulsory, just an awesome opportunity!

School Cross Country
Our school cross country carnival will be held on Friday 15th March (Week 7). All students from Years 2 – 6 will be encouraged to participate. 8, 9 and 10 year olds will run 2 laps of the course (approximately 2km) and 11 & 12 year olds run 3 laps of the course (approximately 3km). As always, family members are very welcome to come along on the day, watch the cross country and cheer on all our children. Students participate in the cross country carnival not only for themselves, but for their House. Additionally, our fastest runners will be competing for the opportunity to represent our school at the Crossroads Zone Cross Country Carnival.
In preparation for the carnival, students will be practising for the cross country as part of our PE and sport program. Teachers will advise their classes which days of the week are training days. Please ensure your
child has appropriate running footwear and a water bottle on these days. We also recommend applying mosquito repellent and sunscreen prior to coming to school.
Further details of the day will be provided in upcoming Tallongs. If you have further questions regarding the cross country, please see Mr Johnston or your child’s teacher.
Sporting Trials
Sporting trials (including soccer, AFL and netball) continue this week. Students in Years 3-6 who are interested in trialling for school and representative teams should ensure they listen carefully to Mrs Lennard’s announcements at Monday assembly and check the student noticeboards (outside 1M and 5J classrooms) for details.
Trails have commenced for Knockout AFL Girls and Boys (Stage 3 only) and Junior and Senior PSSA Soccer.
Senior PSSA Netball and Knockout Girls Soccer (Stage 3 only) trials commence this Friday during Stage 3 sport time. Junior PSSA Netball trials will commence next Wednesday at lunchtime. Trials for Touch Football (Stage 3 only) will begin later this term.
Students can trial for a number of sports. The only clash being PSSA soccer and netball. Both girls and boys are encouraged to trial for both PSSA soccer and netball.
Sporting trials are held during normal sport lessons or lunchtimes to ensure all interested students are given the opportunity to be considered for selection. No trials are held outside of school hours. Please be assured that a number of trials are held for team sports before final selections are made, so if your child is absent from a trial, there will still be ample opportunities for them.
Zone Swimming
Congratulations to the following students who will be representing our school at the Crossroads Zone Swimming Carnival this Thursday at Speers Point Swim Centre. Students will meet under the COLA at 8:00am before heading off. A reminder there will be some students meeting us out there due to their early schedule of events. Families are welcome to attend the carnival and cheer our students on. Mrs Lennard and Mr Bradshaw will be attending the carnival. Please see one of these teachers before leaving with your child on the day.

Rock Band
WSPS Rock Band Auditions - Years 5 & 6
This year’s Rock Band auditions will be held this Thursday February 21st at 8am in the hall.
Auditions are only open to Years 5 & 6 with Year 6 students 1st preference.
(I may consider Year 4 if I am unable to fill positions)
Students auditioning for instruments normally have about 2 year’s experience (except vocalists).
All auditions must be kept short (2 mins max ie: 1x verse/1x chorus), you may bring your own music or lyrics (printed off: not USB/ phone)
Mr McDonald will provide microphones, guitars drums & piano on the day.
(& a small collection of well known- -past Rock Band songs- e.g. “Feel it Still”, ‘Stand By Me”, ‘Radioactive” ‘Jingle Bell Rock”, “Shotgun” ‘It’s a long way to the Top” , ‘Riptide”,
“Learn for life” WSPS song.
Students should have a love for music & those selected should be willing to attend weekly practice throughout the year and a desire to continue with their music at High school.
Successful students will also be required to pay a small yearly fee of $50 (to school office) to cover costs in running this musical programme.
Bring this form to your audition thanks.

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers
Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is
based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
If you are interested in opening a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account for your child you can visit
commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open an account. In order to verify yourself
