Tuesday: Character description Model writing a sentence for the character e.g. The snail is tiny. Say the sentence. Count the number of words in the sentence using fingers. What is the first word in our sentence? What is the next word etc.? What do I need to remember at the beginning/end of a sentence? Read the sentence to check it makes sense. Ask the children to write their sentence about the characters.

What is the story about?

Who is the author of the story?

Who are the characters in the story?

Where is it set?

Monday: Reading

Tell the children that we are going to be reading and writing stories about the story The

Snail and the Whale. Look at the front cover and discuss:

What is the title? Who is the author? What do they

think the story is about? Who is the character in the

story? What do you think will happen in the story? Read

the story The Snail and the Whale. Discuss what they

liked about the story and what they disliked about the story.

Wednesday: Sequencing the story and drama

Today we are going to sequence the story The Snail and the Whale

Discuss what the children know already about the story.

What happens in the beginning of the story?

What happens in the middle part of the story?

What happens at the end of the story?

Use the pictures to sequence (put in order) the story. Write a sentence about each picture if

you can. Use the word mat from earlier in the week to support.

Can you use your words in sentences to retell or act out the story or parts of the story? You

can use the pictures in the resource pack to help you.

Thursday: Setting description

With your grown-up pick two or more of your favourite settings

that the Snail and the Whale visit. Can you write some

sentences using adjectives to describe what the place looks

like?

Friday: Writing a Postcard

Can you imagine you’re the snail and write a postcard telling the other snails about where you

are. Think about your five senses: what can you see, hear, taste, smell and feel? This about

what adjectives you could use. Use word bank and tricky word card (tree). Remember to use

finger spaces, full stops, neat handwriting.
