The theme for Education Week this year is "Learning Together".
We are looking forward to celebrating Education Week 2020 in Week 3 Term 3.
‘Learning Together’ is a partnership between our students, our teachers and our community.
The messages we want to convey during Education Week are:
• Schools are the cornerstone of communities: Parents and carers are our partners in learning. Schools and families benefit from strong, respectful relationships where responsibility for student learning is shared.
• Change and resilience: Our teachers and students are lifelong learners, collaborating in a positive learning environment to achieve their best. Learning together makes us stronger and creates resilient communities.
• Connect and learn together: Our school staff are dedicated professionals who know, value and care for all students. Technology enables learning together anywhere, any time.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with a Disability (NCCD)
The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with a Disability is an annual collection that counts the number of school students receiving an adjustment or support at school due to disability, and the level of adjustment that they are receiving to access education on the same basis as other students.
If you would like further information regarding this scheme, please contact the school and speak to Mr Illich or Ms Moore regarding this.
Assistant Principal Position
A panel has been formed to fill an Assistant Principal position at our school. The panel is made up of the Principal, a teacher and parent representative and an AP from another school.
The procedure will take a number of weeks and is a confidential procedure. I will inform the community of the outcome later this term.
Staff Professional Learning
Our staff are currently completing a Professional Learning online course, ‘Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder.’ The training focuses on Autism Spectrum Disorders, outlining the prevalence and impact of the disability. Many students with autism spectrum disorder have difficulties in processing, storing and retrieving information and this will affect their learning. A range of strategies and adjustments to support learners with an Autism Spectrum Disorder are discussed as well as how to relate these to the identified needs of individual learners.
Staff are also completing mandatory online ‘CPR and Anaphylaxis Training’ this term. Staff will participate in online learning as well as assessment via zoom.
2021 Enrolments
We are taking enrolments for Kindergarten 2021 now. We have had a number of enrolment applications come in to the office this week. If your child turns 5 by 31st July 2021, he or she is eligible to start school at Botany Public School in 2021.
New enrolment procedures are in place in all NSW Public Schools and an enrolment cap has been set based on available permanent classrooms.
Local enrolments will be accepted. Non-local enrolments will have to meet set criteria. An enrolment panel will meet later in the year to discuss individual applications and circumstances.
If you wish to discuss your circumstances or you need to obtain an enrolment form, please contact the office staff who will be happy to assist you. Enrolment forms can be downloaded from our school's website https://botany-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/
Unfortunately, the school is unable to conduct school tours due to COVID restrictions, however we hope to have a school tour in Term 4. Please share this important information with your friends who may not currently have a child enrolled at our school.
Thank you again for your ongoing support.
Kind regards
Kate Holmes - Principal

Kindergarten Enrolments 2021
Botany Public School has continued to grow in size over the last few years as the name of our wonderful school grows in the community. At this stage, we will only be able to guarantee enrolment of Kindergarten children in 2021 if they live in the Botany Public School catchment area. We will also prioritise siblings of students enrolled in and attending the school. Please contact the school to confirm your details if you have a child beginning school in 2021. If you live outside the catchment area, then it will be difficult to place your child at Botany Public School in 2021. We encourage all parents in this position to visit their local school principal. For your local public school, please go to the following link and enter your residential address: https://education.nsw.gov.au/school-finder For those of you whose children will be attending Botany Public School in 2021, we will have two Transition Days on Thursday 5 November and Thursday 24 November, 2020. The first day of school will be Monday 1 February 2021. Prior to this day, on Thursday 28 and Friday 29 January 2021, we will set aside time to meet with your child to complete the Best Start Assessment in Literacy and Numeracy. Please contact the school office if you would like to discuss this matter further.

Our Leadership Team - SRC Representatives, House Captains and Vice Captains – 2020
Classes from Year 1 to year 6 have elected representatives to be part of the Student Representative Council. The SRC is a very important team who meet to discuss ideas to help make our school an even better place as well as helping to plan events to raise money for selected charities. We are very lucky to have such a mature and respectful group of young leaders representing our school.
These student leaders received an award from Matt Thistlethwaite’s office, which will be presented to them in their classrooms this week.

Parking Around Botany Public School
Botany Road and Bay Street have both become very busy thoroughfares and parking in the area is limited.
I am very thankful to the large proportion of our parent community who walk their children to school from home each day or who park their car safely and walk their children to the front gate.
There are unfortunately, a number of parents who do not adhere to the road rules and who park in the ‘No Stopping’ Zone on Botany Road. ‘No Stopping’ means you are not supposed to stop for any reason.
Staff have seen some near misses of recent times with a particular driver dropping their child in the ‘No Stopping’ Zone and then, whilst waving to their child, driving through a red light across the pedestrian crossing. This is very dangerous behaviour!
Children are vulnerable road users. They are at risk in the traffic environment because of their size, their difficulty in judging speed and distance, and the fact that they may behave unpredictably.
Bayside Council Parking Officers and Police patrol cars will be enforcing parking restrictions on a rotational roster system around Botany PS in the near future. Please follow the road rules to keep our children safe:
Always obey the parking signs around schools. They have been designed to keep your children safe.
Do not stop in a ‘No Stopping’ Zone as there is a large fine and loss of demerit points.
Double parking at any time is illegal and is particularly dangerous around schools. It reduces visibility and blocks the road for other motorists.
Your child should always use the safety door to get in and out of the car. The safety door is the rear passenger side door that opens to the kerb side.
Until they are 8 years old, you should always hold a child’s hand when crossing the road, in the car park and when you are on the footpath.
Thank you for adhering to these rules. Kate Holmes – Principal
DOUBLE PARKINGDo not double park at any time. Double parking is illegal and dangerous especially around schools. It reduces visibility and blocks the road for other motorists.
FINE EXCEEDS $344 + 2 DEMERIT POINTS
U TURNS Performing U turns or 3 point turns in school
zones is extremely dangerous.
Performing U turns across unbroken centre lines is illegal and is particularly dangerous around schools.
FINE EXCEEDS $344 + 3 DEMERIT POINTS
PARKING/STOPPING NEAR INTERSECTIONSIt is illegal to park or stop less than 10m from an intersection without lights as this blocks visibility for turning drivers and creates a hazard for all motorists.
FINE EXCEEDS $457 + 2 DEMERIT POINTS
PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS & CHILDREN’S CROSSINGS Slow down as you approach pedestrian
crossings and children’s crossings.
Do not proceed if the road beyond the crossing is blocked.
Do not stop or park in the No Stopping zones on either side of the crossing as this blocks visibility.
At a children’s crossing you must stop at or before the stop line if there is a pedestrian about to cross or already on the crossing.
Do not proceed through a children’s crossing until all pedestrians have completely cleared the crossing.
FINE EXCEEDS $572 + 4 DEMERIT POINTS
PARKING SAFELY
AROUND SCHOOLSRoad Rules Reminders
Children need assistance in the traffic environment until at least the age of 10. They are not equipped physically or developmentally to make the crucial decisions to keep themselves safe.
All children need to be actively supervised in and around moving vehicles including on footpaths, shared paths, driveways and car parks; at traffic lights, zebra and other road crossings; and on quiet streets and busy roads.
Your children are always watching and want to be just like adults. Make sure you always set a good example around traffic and talk to your children about why you are stopping at the kerb and what you are watching and listening for. Explain where and when it is safe to cross and why.
Hold hands with your children around traffic. If your hands are full, make sure your child holds onto your bag, pram or even your arm or sleeve.
Fines and demerit points for school parking infringements are determined by the State Government and subject to change.
The nominated fines and demerit points listed in this brochure are current as at February 2020.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Welcome to week 3! We have had a remarkable start to the
term and the fun has certainly continued from the holidays.
For the last two weeks we have been spending most of our
time getting to know our new smiling faces by creating
friendship frames using paddle pop sticks, friendship
bracelets, necklaces and so so much more.
We have had our club sign ups happening for a week now
and have even had a few brain storming sessions with the
children to discuss how our clubs will be run and what the
children want to achieve at the end of the term. Our most
popular clubs so far are musical theatre/dance club, S.T.E.M
Club and Epic games club. Our amazing Miss Jess will be
running our dance club with our wonderful Miss Rebecca
running S.T.E.M club and finally we are trying something a
little different and allowing some of our senior students to
run our Epic Games club. We are very excited to bring the
FUN this term with our clubs.
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENINGPlease contact the service if your child is sick,
away or has been collected early from school. If you are unable to reach us please leave a
voicemail or a text with your child's name and info about them not attending the afternoon session. If a child is on our roll but isn't at roll call we will give you a call followed by a text.
THANK YOU
