I measured the width, length and height of the file using a traditional ruler (cm), a set square and a measuring tape.

I measured the width, length and height of the file using a traditional ruler (cm), a set square and a measuring tape.

In order to make the exact copy of the handle at scale 1:1, I scanned the handle, printed it out and then traced it using an A4 piece of tracing paper.

This is when the file is half opened. The 'paper fan folding' allows the file to expand. It can only stretch to approximately 70º. If further stretched, the expanding folded paper will tear.

Miura-Ori Pattern: Miura folding is invented by a Japanese astrophysicist, Koryo Miura in 1995. The folding was invented to deploy large solar panels in space. This origami folding has been widely used to easily fold and unfold maps. Miura folding simply allows you to open or close the model by simply pulling the two opposite corners of the model.

This model has a larger folding.

I followed these instructions and found them very clear and easy to follow. This page is derived the the site listed below.

“Personal space refers to an area with invisible boundaries surrounding a person's body into which intruders may not comel.”

Some people claim that they can visualise or feel the aura or color around human bodies. Some people are more aware of their personal space than others. Also, people react differently to different kinds of people they know.

Second skin costumes are designed to help you feel safe as a way to defend your personal space.

This collection by Breanne Lee was one of the seven senior collections shown in the University of Hawaii 2013 student fashion show, “Zeitgeist: Spirit of the Times”. These garments are made from synthetic Tyvek fabric to highlight the paper-like texture. She used origami folding techniques to create dresses that have complex, geometric folds and sharp edges. These examples show how the use of origami folding is sucessfully incorporated into the fashion industry.

1st Design Product: Second Skin

Taking inspiration from the skeletal structure of a normal turtle, I came up with this costume design. I was inspired by the fact that a turtle's shield is very strong and it is naturally constructed to protect the skeletal bones and internal organs of the turtle. Notice the pattern of the turtle's costal shield almost resembles the 'water bomb tessellation' (origami pattern) on the lady's armour. The person wearing this costume will feel protected, secured and strong.

2nd Design Product: Second Skin

The inspiration behind this costume design is from the structure of a hedgehog. When a hedgehog spots a predator, it protects itself by rolling into a ball and pointing out its sharp spines.

The sharp miura follding on the lady's waistline gives her a sense of protection against intruders who come close to her personal space zone.

3rd Design Product: Second Skin

This idea is derived from the Egyptian headpiece. The Pharaoh head gear acts like an armour which protects the head. The tough and sharp texture of miura folding protects you from intruders.
