II.  RedemptiveHistory

Inshort,theBiblecouldbesummedupinone

word:SALVATION!

ThestoryoftheBibleisthestoryof REDEMPTION.

AndbecausetheBiblecovershistoryfrom beginningandend,theBibleisthestoryof

RedemptiveHistory.

"Redemptivehistoryisthatseriesofeventsby

whichGodredeemshispeoplefromsin,a narrativefulfilledinChrist.Itistheprincipal

subject‐matterofScripture.Redemptivehistory constitutesthe"mightyactsofGod"thatheperformsforthesakeofhis people,thoseactsbywhichpeoplecometoknowthatheistheLord.”

 “Redemptivehistoryis,simplyput,thehistoryofredemption.ItisGod’splan

forhistory,whichhedecreedbeforethefoundationoftheworld.Itiswhat

Godhasdoneinthepasttoredeem,whatheisdoinginnowtoredeem,andwhathewilldointhefuturetoredeem.“Toredeemwhat?”youmightwell

ask.Well,mostbroadlyspeaking,toredeemcreation;morenarrowly,to

redeemcreationthroughtheredemptionofmankind;andmorenarrowlystill,toredeemmankindthroughanelectremnant,andtoredeemcreation

throughthatremnant.Thisredemptionofmankindandcreationisahistoricalprocess,andanygivenpointinhistoryrepresentsacertainstageof

thatprocess.”3

“TheNewTestamentlieshiddenintheOld,andtheOldTestamentis

unveiledintheNew.”

“TheBiblealsomakesitclearthatGodhasaunifiedplanforallofhistory .His ultimatepurpose,“aplanforthefullnessoftime,”is“touniteallthingsinhim

[Christ],thingsinheavenandthingsonearth”(Eph.1:10),“tothepraiseof

hisglory”(Eph.1:12).Godhadthisplanevenfromthebeginning:“remember theformerthingsofold;forIamGod,andthereisnoother;IamGod,and

thereisnonelikeme,declaringtheendfromthebeginningandfromancient

timesthingsnotyetdone,saying,‘Mycounselshallstand,andIwill accomplishallmypurpose’”(Isa.46:9–10).“Whenthefullnessoftimehad

come,”whenthemomentwasappropriateinGod'splan,“Godsentforthhis Son,bornofwoman,bornunderthelaw,toredeemthosewhowereundert 

helaw”(Gal.4:4–5).

TheworkofChristonearth,andespeciallyhiscrucifixionandresurrection,is

theclimaxofhistory;itisthegreatturningpointatwhichGodactually

accomplishedthesalvationtowardwhichhistoryhadbeenmoving throughouttheOT.ThepresenteralooksbackonChrist'scompletedwork

butalsolooksforwardtotheconsummationofhisworkwhenChristwill comeagainandwhentherewillappear“newheavensandanewearthin

whichrighteousnessdwells”(2Pet.3:13;seeRev.21:1–22:5).

TheunityofGod'splanmakesitappropriateforhimtoincludepromisesandpredictionsatearlierpointsintime,andthenforthefulfillmentsoftheseto

comeatlaterpoints.Sometimesthepromisestakeexplicit form,aswhenGodpromisesthecomingoftheMessiah,thegreatSaviorwhomIsraelexpected

(Isa.9:6–7).Sometimesthepromisestakesymbolicform,aswhenGodcommandedanimalsacrificestobeofferedasasymbolfortheforgivenessof
