Week 11 This week I will manage and research my two ancillary task below is my research and other findings.

Double age spread Film articles similar in style and content to your production (minimum of 2 examples)

Research should include analysis of codes and conventions of these two types of products including layout, style,

colour, typeface, text and images.

Image I will loo closely at the image because In tend to construct one of a similar nature, then go on to analysis the other

elements of the spread.

Texas chain saw massacre is about a group of friends passing through are stalked and hunted down by a deformed killer with a chainsaw in order to sustain his poor family who can only afford to eat what they kill (imdb). I have focused on the image as it is of the same genre mine

will be.

The image is of one of the protagonist this is

derived from the expression on her face. This is seen by the use

of camera angle, the close up not only

shows her face but also her body language

the two allow the audience to see the

distress and fear which provoke them to want

to read on and find out what or who

caused this.

The actor in this double page spread is a female this may because it is argued that both men and women are attracted to female focused images this means the double page spread has a wider audience and in turn can target more potential watchers of the film. Following codes and convention of thriller films the protagonist is a woman and this can produce more feelings of empathy.

The stance of the female gives off a sense of vulnerability and the positioning of her means only some of her face is seen this gives a feel of mystery and also adds to the fear seen in her face.

The effect used for the image is similar to that of a sepia filter this adds depth to the image along with the background which already is dull and murky. The sepia like filter ands a sincerer feel to the image in which then the audience can identify with the genre with out knowing the title of the film.

The layout of the page mean the image takes out nearly 2/3 of the page and is every eye catching and dramatic, the desired effects are felt by the audience who can clearly get a feel and see the image, this is very important as the aim of a close up is to both see the facial expression which you can and see the body language from the chest upwards.

Large title in san serif font this is eye catching and bold which will draw audiences in and in turn get them to read the article and even watch the film. The colours used is in keep with the colour scheme. Although a thriller film review simple colours have bee used and this fitting as the image is the main focus.

The image follows the convention on it being on the left had side of the spread this in the

aim of drawing the reader in once they

have turn the page as it is the first thing they

see. The image being large is eye catching

and it provokes of empathy as you can clearly see the facial

expression.

The “Review” at the top of the page allows the reader to find out the purpose of the article.

This is a convention is commonly used in review articles.

Following the code of not only film reviews but most articles there is use of columns this aids a neat and organised layout making use of the limited space due to the large image. The text is aligned to the left which defers from the usual justified alignment typically used. Each new paragraph has a indent signifying a new topic, and the text is in a formal simplistic serif font.

The month edition, magazine name and page number is conventionally places in the corner of each page.

Keeping with the aim to review the movie there is a pull showing the

figures of the movie telling the audience how successful the film

was that year.

A review quote is used in the bottom

left corner of the page this already

will provoke readers to watch the film or make and informed

judgement if the don’t read the entirety of the

article, supported by positivity of the

quote.

The colour scheme is a simple grey, blue and yellow although not your typical colour scheme to correspond with the thriller film it is simple and the yellow is an accent to the background of the image.

This shows the formats the film is available in highlighting the new blue-ray format, which is informative for readers.

This is informing readers they can subscribe to empire through their

website.

Here we have the photo credits.

The layout for the film review for Predators challenges the traditional text on one page image on the other, this makes creative use of the spread in a way which allows the image to dominate the pages efficiently. However the text which is separated, which is just as important is highlighted by the striking white background. The artistic use of shapes in the spread is attention-grabbing along with the colours used. The organisation of the page also allows for the space for a second image a screen shot for the film which is informative for the reader. Overall all though simplistic and confined the spreads creative flair and bold arrangement makes the double page stand out and promotes and informs about the film successfully

The image used in its nature is very eye-catching, the angle at which it is taken furthers the disturbing atmosphere of the image and gives the illusion of the character being very tall and over powering. The effects and filters used gives a scary and sci-fi edge to the image fitting the sub-genre, Science fiction. The background used for this image is along with the image tells the audience the film will be action packed; simultaneously the genre of the film can be assumed upon. The supporting images the right of the spread are informative telling the reader more on the film this furthers the chance of the reader watching the film.

Here is the page number and the magazine name which is inn the conventional place for empire and other magazines.

The colour scheme makes use of primary colours, red yellow and blue. They all stand out as they are in block form as well as being the colours of introductory paragraphs and that name of the film. The use of red is most significant in the page with that being the colour of the 3 circles on the first page and background colour for the supporting text and images. The use of white for the background of the text allows for easy reading as the text is black and small; it also acts as a boarder for the main image.

The re is no significant large title of the article, which is

challenging of typical film magazine

conventions. However the title “Predators Reconstruction” is

noticeable through the use of colour (red

and black) and it positioning hear the 3

red circles.

The text here is in a serif font which is

formal fitting of the audience who are

more likely to be of an older age. The small character size allows

for the text to fit in coordination which other surrounding

elements. The use of a drop cap for each

new topic is eye catching and the

indent shows for a new paragraph.

The “On set exclusive” is a tool used to grab

attention and prompt viewers to read the

article.
