Revise Tricky Words

Last week we learnt these tricky words.

Can you remember why they are tricky?

so saidIt is tricky because the ‘ai’ digraph is making an ‘e’ sound in said (e.g. sed)

It is tricky because the ‘o’ is making it’s letter name instead of it’s letter sound. It is similar to tricky words: no and go

Teach Tricky Words

Here are the next two Tricky Words to learn, they both have something in common.

have wereIt is tricky because it has a silent e on

the end: wereIt is tricky because it has a silent e on

the end: have

Can you write a sentence with each of

these words?

Revise There are no new digraphs or trigraphs in Phase 4, instead we will be reading and writing words with ‘consonant clusters’.

Can you remember what consonants

are?Can you sing the alphabet song and point to

the letters as you sing them?

Can you sort the letters of the alphabet into vowels and consonants?

How many letters are vowels? How many are consonants?

Parent Information• Consonants are sounds made by blocking air from flowing out of the mouth with

the teeth, tongue, lips or palate ('b' is made by putting your lips together, 'l' is made by touching your palate with your tongue).

• Vowel sounds are made by allowing breath to flow out without closing any parts. • ‘Y‘ can make either a consonant sound at the start of a word ('yellow') or a vowel

sound at the end of a word ('sunny‘).

Teach Consonant Clusters: CCVC (consonant, consonant, vowel, consonant)

tram

Read the ‘CCVC’ words and choose the picture to match

Parent Information reminder• A ‘consonant cluster’ is two or three consonants with no vowels

between them (e.g. two in ‘trap’ or three in 'splash‘).• It is different from a digraph/trigraph because their letters only

make one sound (e.g. ‘sh’ or ‘igh’). • In a consonant cluster, the letter sounds are pronounced in one

syllable but you can hear each one individually.

Practise Read, then sort the real and silly CCVC wordsChoose one of the three games.

Select ‘Phase 4’, then choose ‘CCVC words’.

There are three options to try out:

• Words with set 1-7 letters

• Words with set 1-7 letters plus digraphs

• Polysyllabic words

Parent TipIf you can’t access the Phonics Play games, you could write these words on pieces of paper to sort into real and non-real words:spot, stem, trut, plon, grip, glum, spim, flom, slip, sniff, smell, brap, gran, pliff, still, snot, clap, click

Teach Consonant Clusters: CCVC (consonant, consonant, vowel, consonant)

Write the ‘CCVC’ words to match the pictures

Parent Tips• Ask your child to say the whole word first, then ‘sound it out’ verbally. • Ask them to count how many sounds they can hear (four in each word). • Ask “Which sound can you hear first?”, then “Write that sound down”.• Then, “Which sound can you hear next?” etc.• Check letter formation and pencil grip is correct.• Finally ask them to read back the word they have written to check it.
