Dear Parents, Students and Community Members,
Beautification of OLC School Grounds – School Board Fruit Tree Appeal
As you are aware, we are currently in the process of
moving forward with our OLC Building Programme.
Our new classroom near the School Hall looks great
and is working well as a classroom for our Year Three
students. We are looking forward to the Stage 5
build commencing soon. This build includes two
new classrooms to the south of the year four
classroom, an extension and refurbishment of the library and
development of the temporary carpark above the front carpark.
Together with the built environment of our school community, we are
also pushing forward with beautifying our school grounds. The nature-
based playground is a centre-piece of our beautification programme
as it provides a natural landscape for our students to play on and, as
you’d agree, looks fantastic! Stages 2 and 3 to follow in the future.

Thank you to John for his expertise and swift action in getting a second sand-play area for our Year
one and two students. We also have plans to redevelop our pre-primary playgrounds, with more
news on that forthcoming.
You may also have noticed that the shrubs along the upper carpark have recently been removed
due to many of them reaching the end of their lifespan and concerns about this area becoming
a likely habitat for snakes. What we would like to see along this area is a row of fruit trees which
will add character, shade and of course flavour to our school front entrance. To this end, we
would like to offer both parents and staff the opportunity to contribute toward the purchasing of
these trees. We are looking at buying 10 fruit trees of different varieties, which we can purchase
at $70 for an advanced tree (approx. 1.5m). You may like to purchase a tree outright, or provide
a donation of a proportionate value. All contributions are warmly welcomed. As a growing school
community it is important that we continue to establish areas throughout the entire school that
are warm and inviting for our OLC community and visitors, are of easy-care and which provide
produce for our canteen and for other purposes.
Thank you for your consideration of making a donation toward our ‘Fruit Tree Appeal’ and for
taking ownership of beautifying our school.
If you are keen to make a donation, please drop it into reception, send it to the school in a sealed
named envelope, or call Sandra.
Amanda Prestipino (Secretary of School Board).
Car Parking
Earlier this week we narrowly avoided a very dangerous situation on Sloan Drive. If using this area:
a) Please park safely, alight from your car and carefully supervise your child onto the school
grounds.
b) If there are spaces available, park off the road on the west side of the road and supervise
your child/children across the road.
c) Do not park on the wrong side of the road and allow your children to exit the car on the
roadside – this is extremely dangerous.
d) Do not use this area as a kiss and drop place.
e) If you wish to drop your child without getting out of the car, please do this in the designated
lane in the main carpark and make sure the children exit on the path side. Since a proportion
of the staff are now parking in the carpark near the new building, there are a few spaces
available to parents in the top area of the front carpark. Parents are welcome to park in this
area.
f) Do not park in front of our neighbour’s driveway or in front of their block please.
Future Plans to Alleviate Parking Problems
I am trying again with the City of Busselton and Main Roads for signage and speed limit signs on
Sloan Drive. When I tried last year I was informed that there was insufficient traffic to allow this to
happen. I am also trying for a footpath on Sloan Drive.
As part of our future building plans, there will be a slip lane put in from the back of the basketball
courts (entry via a new crossover at the southern end) up the existing entry off Sloan Drive. When
the buildings are finished, this road will be used as a second kiss and drop and in-car pick up lane.
Until these improvements are put in place, I ask that all parents exercise considerable caution in
all car parks and make sure all students are under very close supervision at all times.
A warm welcome to our new family - Sandra and Mark McMaster
with their children Max and Taya who commenced in Kindy Red
and Year 2H this week.
Interschool Swimming Carnival
Our interschool swimming team is preparing for the carnival to be held at the South West Sporting
Centre in Bunbury on 23rd March. Mrs Sinclair has been in communication with the families involved
to share all details and to arrange a training session.
We would love for those who can make it to come along to support the students at the carnival,
but just to let you know there is an entry fee of $1 for all spectators. The entry fee for the competitors
is covered by the school
God bless,

POPCORN FRIDAY FOR PROJECT COMPASSION
Last Wednesday we began the season of Lent where we work
hard to pray more, to give something up and to find ways to
help others. The Year 6 Catholic Community Ministry is leading
the drive to raise funds for Project Compassion with a weekly
“Pop Corn Friday” being held for the duration of the term. Pop
Corn can be purchased from the canteen at recess for
50c a bag on Fridays with all proceeds being given to
the less fortunate.
Congratulations Year 6’s raised $87 today! Note that next
week popcorn will available for Pre Primary to Year 2 and
the following week will be Year 3 – Year 6 so that no one misses out.
Please continue to support this worthy initiative over the duration of the term.
STAFF COMMISSIONING MASS
This Saturday night will see the OLC staff, P&F and Board Members attend a special
Commissioning Mass at OLOSC. During this ceremony, Father Ian will welcome new teachers,
P&F Representatives and Board Members to our school and will bless them in the undertaking of
their duties for the school year. All families are invited to attend. Please keep these people in
your prayers as they fulfil their individually unique and valuable roles within our school.
YEAR TWO FAMILY MASS
The second of our Family Masses hosted by both our Year Two
classes, takes place NEXT Saturday night at 6.00pm at the church
(18th March). The Year 2’s will participate by way of greeting,
collection, offertory and singing. We warmly invite all families from
any year level who would like to attend and celebrate Mass to
come along and to share fellowship and pizza following the
celebration. The pizza is generously funded by the OLC P & F and
provided by Big Pig Pizza. Please RSVP to
[email protected] for catering purposes ASAP.

OLC Religious Education Coordinator.
Our Learning Culture
Differentiated Programs
If you walk around the school on most mornings, you will find many small groups of students
working with teachers and support staff. These groups at work are part of the differentiated,
support and extension programs that are now in full swing at OLC. The programs we have in
place to cater for students progress and to ensure that they have the right level of challenge
are:
Spelling Group Rotations – Years 1-3
Mini Lit Reading Program Year 1
Multi Lit Reading Program Years 2- 4
Mac Lit Reading Program _ Yeas 3 -6
Maths Extension – Years 2 – 6
This process is driven from two of our school educational goals of “Differentiated Teaching and
Learning” and “Analysis and Discussion of Data” .
Our teachers have spent time assessing students and then using that data to form the above
groups. This is a rigorous and thorough task that our OLC teachers have done so professionally.
There are also some new initiatives that are happening in Kindy and Pre Primary this year.
More about those in the weeks to come.
Learning Intentions and Success Criteria
Continuing from last year all our classes are displaying the learning intentions and the success
criteria required for learning for each lesson. This is part of our third school educational goal of
“Effective Teaching and Learning Practices”. These displays assist our students and teachers
greatly. Be sure to spot the learning intentions and success criteria display in your child’s
classroom.
Friendology 101 Curriculum
We are looking forward to an informative and productive day with Deb Perich, from Perth
College and the UR Strong organisation, who will be leading our staff through the
implementation of the Friendology 101 program on Monday.
“Our programs have improved the social climate in hundreds of schools globally, teaching
children a common language for confidently managing conflict and creating a culture
rooted in respect and kindness. This unique program empowers children with the skills and self-
confidence to develop healthier friendships.”
- URStrong
Please don't miss out on the “Language of Friendship”
parent/child workshop from 3:30pm – 5:30pm on Monday
afternoon. See the details attached. There is a $5 discount to
all OLC community members.
Early Childhood Corner K - 2 There is so much happening in our Early Childhood classrooms. They are busy exciting places
to be. The teachers in these classrooms are constantly monitoring the learning of all students
and reviewing and adjusting their planning in order to cater for the academic and social
emotional needs of all children.
It is important that parents, as the first educators of their children, communicate regularly
with their children's classroom teachers. If something is happening that may affect your
child's day at school then let the teachers know. If your child is asking questions about a
particular topic or displaying interest in learning about a specific thing then communicate
this to your teachers. The child's interests are at the heart of our planning and learning
programmes.
At the beginning of Term 2 the teachers and education assistants will work together to review
our centre's teaching philosophy. If you have thoughts about this then please write them
down, place them in a sealed envelope addressed to Julie Birch and hand the envelope to
Fran at the reception desk. We value your thoughts. It is important to understand that this
document is required to be concise and written in a way that can be understood by all
members of the school community.
The pre-primary students have just completed their On Entry Assessments which focus on
Literacy and Numeracy knowledge and the Year Ones and Twos are in the process of
completing Observation Survey Assessments. These assessments will give the classroom
teachers’ detailed data about individuals that will be used inform their planning.
Early Childhood Philosophy
Our Early Childhood Centre aims to foster children's learning through acknowledging and
encouraging each individual’s characteristics of belonging, being and becoming in a safe,
happy, inviting environment that balances a play-based learning programme with essential
explicit teaching in key learning areas.
We believe that strong collaborative relationships between a child's family, culture,
educators, professionals and the community will empower a child to co-construct and
further develop his or her own identity, voice and understanding of the world.
Learning and developmental outcomes will aim to foster children to:
Have a strong sense of identity
Be connected with and contribute to their world
Have a strong sense of wellbeing
Be confident and involved learners
Be effective communicators
The curriculum is directed by the Australian Curriculum (SCSA) which directs ‘what’ we teach
and the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) which guides as to ‘how’ to plan
developmentally appropriate learning experiences.
At Our Lady of the Cape Primary School the children’s literacy development is supported by
the implementation of the PLD (Diana Rigg) programme which provides a strong foundation
for the development of phonemic awareness which is essential to both reading and writing.
Differentiated small group and individualised explicit instruction occurs on a daily basis
before immersing children in play experiences that allow them to explore and consolidate
their new learning.
In a similar fashion, numeracy skills are taught sequentially through both explicit instruction
and playful ‘hands-on’ learning. We believe a strong foundation to numeracy is provided
through informed teaching, engaging learning experiences and the modelling of a positive
attitude towards mathematics.
We believe that play is an integral part of the Early Childhood setting. The children will
engage in both teacher directed play and free play to explore their world and make sense
of new concepts and ideas.
The learning environment and planning is driven by the children’s needs and interests and
allows for the differing developmental stages of individuals.
We believe in fostering independence, confidence and a sense of self by providing a
supportive and nurturing classroom environment in which students feel safe to take risks with
their learning and therefore, to foster a life time love for learning.

The Kitchen Garden team are very excited to share with you a NEW garden
initiative for 2017 that builds on the fabulous work done by Alisa Allison.
Introducing the OLC Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program! The key
focus of this program is to bring "Pleasurable Food Education" to our children
and wider school community and encourage healthy and positive food habits
in the formative years, supporting our fabulous teachers who reinforce these
lessons in class.
This nationally recognised and accredited program offers a wide range of resources and
"delicious" recipes so we'll be sharing regular updates and kitchen inspiration that harnesses the
"health" potential of fresh kitchen garden produce!
Our focus is to begin by supporting the canteen with a dedicated lettuce "patch" and as we get
our gardening mojo happening and crops harvesting we will be able to supply more produce in
keeping with a self sufficiency approach as well as support class based activities to get the kids
enjoying fabulously fresh produce straight from the garden.
If you are as excited as we are about this initiative then we would warmly welcome your support
and input especially for our busy bees and hands on projects with your child's class as they unfold
over the year.
The first project we need assistance with is Sunday March 19th at 9.30am. There's a yummy cake
as an incentive! We'd LOVE some more hands and it only takes about an hour at the most so if
you have 30 to spare we'll love you forever!
PLEASE email Sally at [email protected] or
Amanda at [email protected] and
we'll happily add you to the team, the more the
merrier, and together we can be part of the evolving
education empowering our children with skills for life.
