Introduction: An integrated approach to the control of invasive plants involves three compo-nents: prevention, detection and control. Thesemethods should be applied to all invasive plants, including those identified in this booklet. Each landmanager in Florida needs to be practicing thesemethods in order to stop the spread of invasiveplants on their properties, onto adjacent propertiesand into other states.

Name: Old World Climbing FernScientific name: Lygodium microphyllumHow to ID: Vinelike plants consisting oflong, twining fronds up to 90 feet long.Rhizomes (underground stems), and rachis(main stem of the frond) are dark brownto black and wiry. Leafy branches off themain stem are 2 – 5 inches long with sev-eral pairs of leaflets. Non-fertile leafletsare oblongish without lobes. Fertile leafletsare fringed with tiny lobes of enrolled leaftissue along the edge of the leaf. Climbsand covers trees and shrubs and is able toform dense mats up to 3 feet thick abovesoil. Common in moist areas, but alsofound in shallow water and dry areas.

Name: Japanese Climbing FernScientific name: Lygodium japonicumHow to ID: Vinelike plants consisting oflong, twining fronds up to 90 feet long.Rhizomes (underground stems), and rachis(main stem of the frond) are dark brownto black and wiry. Leafy branches off themain stem are 4 – 8 inches long with several pairs of leaflets. Non-fertile leafletsare triangular with lobes, appearing lacy.Fertile leaflets are smaller in shape withrows of enrolled leaf tissue along edge ofthe leaf. Climbs and covers trees andshrubs. Common in moist areas, however, seems to tolerate drier areas better thanOld World climbing fern.

Name: Cogon GrassScientific name: Imperata cylindricaHow to ID: Dense, erect perennial grassgrowing 1 – 5 feet in height. Colony form-ing with tufts of long leaves, yellow-greenblades, and silver-plumed flowers. Seeds in spring. Leaf blade has distinct off-centermidrib, which is more apparent toward thetip of the blade. Serious weed of drylandsin Florida, but also occurs in briefly flood-ed areas. Forms dense stands, which cancover large areas resulting in almost totaldisplacement of other plants. Considered asignificant fire hazard. Mostly unpalatableto wildlife and livestock.

Name: Tropical Soda AppleScientific name: Solanum viarumHow to ID: Bushy, prickly herbaceousperennial plant. Plants grow from 3 – 6feet tall, and the entire plant has thornsapproximately 0.5 – 1 inch long. Has large, lobed leaves with hairy surfaces. Theimmature fruits look like tiny watermelons, but turn solid yellow at maturity. Seeds arehighly viable. The flowers are white withyellow stamens. Commonly found in pas-tures, open disturbed sites, edges of wood-lands and hardwood hammocks. Fruitreadily consumed by livestock and wildlife. Can infest a pasture or native area within 1 – 2 years and degrade pasture value.

Name: Downy Rose MyrtleScientific name: Rhodomyrtus tomentosaHow to ID: Evergreen shrub that grows 6 feet tall (occasionally to 12 feet). Leavesare approximately 3 inches long and areglossy green above and densely soft-hairybelow. A distinct feature on the underside of the leaf is the presence of 3 main veinsrunning up from leaf base. Flowers are rose-pink and grow up to 1 inch across. Fruit is abluish-purple berry about 1/2 inch across. Itflowers profusely in the spring and can cre-ate large monocultures. Found along uplandedges of wetlands and understories of nativepine flatwoods. Threatens to become worsethan Brazilian pepper in central Florida.

Name: Chinese Tallow Tree (popcorn tree)Scientific name: Sapium sebiferumHow to ID: Deciduous tree with milkysap that grows to 30 feet tall. Leaves are 1 – 2.5 inches wide with broadly roundedbases that taper to a slender point. It hassmall yellow flowers that are borne onspikes to 8 inches long and occur in thespring. Fruit is a 1/2-inch wide, 3-lobedcapsule that turns brown at maturity toreveal 3 dull white seeds. The seeds, whichoften remain attached to the tree throughthe winter, resemble popcorn. This tree canthrive in well-drained uplands as well as inbottomlands, shores of waterbodies, and onfloating islands.

Control InformationThis information provides specific control tech-niques for the species included in this publication.Following are tables of commercial products avail-able for each herbicide active ingredient discussed.

Common Herbicide Application MethodsFoliar: Apply herbicide directly to the leaves ofplant by thoroughly spraying to wet the leaf sur-faces. Do not spray to the point of run-off. Surfac-tants are often needed to facilitate spreading andpenetration of the herbicide through plant cuticle:a thick, waxy, leaf layer present on most plants.Cut stump: Cut down the tree or shrub, andimmediately apply herbicide to the cut surfacejust inside the bark. The herbicide must beapplied within minutes after the trunk is cut.Basal Bark: Apply a 6 – 12 inch band of herbi-cide around the circumference of the trunk ofthe plant, approximately 1 foot above ground, towhere the trunk is entirely wet but not to thepoint of run-off. This treatment works best onyoung trees with smooth bark. It is usually noteffective on older trees with thick corky bark.

Old World & Japanese Climbing FernsSmall or low-growing infestations: Use a foliar application of a 1% – 3% solution ofglyphosate product (volume of herbicide/volumeof diluent) or of metsulfuron methyl productapplied at an equivalent of 2 oz. of product per 100 gallons (0.6 g/gal). The 2 herbicides are also often applied together. Plants treatedwith glyphosate alone will begin dying within 3 weeks, while plants treated with metsulfuronmethyl alone may take several months. Treatedpopulations MUST be monitored for regrowthand re-treated as necessary.

Vines climbing high into trees: Cut the plantat waist level and treat the rooted portion of theplant below the cut as described above. The por-tion of the plant left above the cut will die with-out application of herbicide. You MUST revisitthe site within 6 months to a year to treat newinfestations resulting from spore release. For mostconsistent results in both treatments, apply her-bicide when plants are actively growing and notstressed by enviromental conditions.

Cogon GrassFor dense stands, effective management com-bines mechanical and chemical treatments. 1) Mow or burn infestation in late spring to remove old growth and thatch layer. 2) Deeplydisc site 6 – 8 weeks later, when grass hasresprouted to a height of 6 – 12 inches. (Discingis not used in sensitive natural areas, but is okon road shoulders, disturbed areas, etc. Cleanequipment of contaminated dirt prior to movingfrom site.) 3) When regrowth has occurred or forsparse stands (small plant clumps or a low numberof individual plants scattered in an area) use afoliar application of a 2% glyphosate product solu-tion in areas that will be immediately revegetated. In areas where immediate revegetation is notplanned, and non-target plant damage is not aconcern, use a foliar application of a 1% – 1.5%imazapyr product solution. The addition of a non-ionic surfactant is recommended to increaseherbicide uptake. A tank mix of imazapyr andglyphosate can be used. For a 1 gallon tank, use2.5 oz. glyphosate product and 0.25 oz. imazaphyr

product. The best time to apply herbicides is in early fall before first frost. Imazapyr is high-ly active in soil. Nearby plants may be damaged by root uptake or improper application.

Tropical Soda Apple For sparse stands (small patches of plants or alow number of individual plants scattered in anarea): Either physically remove the plants (digthem with a shovel) or spray them with a herbi-cide. If the plants have mature fruit, remove theplants by digging and discard them in a safe loca-tion so seeds don’t spread. Use a foliar applicationof a 0.5% solution of triclopyr ester product usinga 0.1% – 0.25% non-ionic surfactant or a 3% solu-tion of glyphosate product. Coverage is importantto get maximum control. Monitor the treated areafor 1 – 2 years and re-treat when necessary (don’tallow new plants to produce fruit and seed).

For dense stands (> 50% of the ground coverin an area): Mow in the spring to a 2 – 4-inch

height. Repeat mowing at 50 – 60 day intervalsto prevent flowering; then use a foliar applicationof 1 quart of triclopyr ester product per acre plusa non-ionic surfactant in late May/early June, when plant regrowth is at the first flowering stage.Monitor the treated site beginning in the fall andspot treat all plants in the pasture. Continue themonitoring and spot spraying for 2 – 3 years.

Downy Rose MyrtleTwo different application methods may be used.Use a basal bark application of a 10% – 20% triclopyr ester product solution. Because this is a multi-trunk plant, apply herbicide to all trunksfor maximum effectiveness. For larger plants, follow-up treatment in 6 months – 1 year willbe necessary. Alternatively, use a foliar applica-tion of a 1% imazapyr product solution mixedwith a 1% methylated seed oil adjuvant solution. It may take 3 – 6 months to notice herbicideeffects when using imazapyr. *See note onimazapyr in cogon grass section.

Chinese Tallow TreeFor trees: Basal bark application or cut stumptreatment of herbicide. Use a basal bark applica-tion of a 15% solution of triclopyr ester productto trees < 10 inches in diameter or a 20% solu-tion to trees > 10 inches in diameter. For cutstump application, apply either a 20% solution of triclopyr ester product, a 10% solution of triclopyr amine product or a 2% – 3% solution of imazapyr product immediately to trunk. *See note on imazapyr in cogon grass section. If trees are cut at a time when seeds are attached, make sure that the material is disposed of insuch a way that the seeds will not be dispersedto new areas where they can germinate andproduce new trees.

For saplings (> 10 inches): Use a foliar applica-tion of a 0.5% – 0.75% solution of imazapyr prod-uct. Seedlings up to 10 inches tall should be pulledby hand before they reach seed-bearing maturity.
