WEEDONS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Respect The Rest & Be Your Best 05 Dec 2018 Term 4 Week 8 www.weedons.school.nz Tena Koutou Katoa The time is quickly running away on us and the end of year is looming up fast. Hope you have our final assembly and prize-giving (Wednesday 12 th ) and Jellie Park picnic (Friday 14 th ) in your diaries. The prize-giving begins at Rolleston College auditorium at 6p.m (we would hold it at school if we had the space). This event is for all our students and their families, class and school prizes are awarded and it is a final chance for our school to come together as a community for 2018.We look forward to seeing you all there. Information on Jellie Park is attached. Thanks so much to FOW for once again funding this event. Yesterday, we were delighted to welcome the NZ Police dog squad to our school. This came about as a result of two year 6 students (Dan and Lucas) concern earlier in the year when police dog Cosmos was injured in the line of duty. They decided to write to Cosmos’ handler expressing their wish that he make a good recovery and come and visit our school. Thanks to Dan and Lucas for bringing Cosmos and his team to Weedons. We were all enthralled at the skill of the dog team and their handlers. A huge thank you to Selwyn Business Association who have donated a set of new safety vests to Weedons. This set will be used to replace some of the more tatty ones we have and gives us enough vests for a class set. Stationery will be delivered to your home, please ensure it comes to school with your child on the first day. We have decided to implement this as we are concerned about the number of unpaid stationery accounts and the school can no longer afford to fund this compulsory payment.

Top Performer Room 5 The top performer in Room 5 this term is Angus. Angus is a charming and humorous young man with beautiful manners. He is kind to others, and always helpful and responsible too. Academically Angus has made huge strides this year. Through participating in Reading Recovery and Speech Therapy, and with fantastic support from his family, Angus has advanced many, many reading levels. In class he has just moved up a reading group and is now reading books at Purple level – wow Angus this is fantastic progress, you have showed great ambition in your learning! In writing, Angus is now writing longer stories and he is very conscientious about using capital letters and full stops for almost all his sentences. Angus is also becoming a very good speller because he is so conscientious about practising his Jolly Phonics sounds each week and learning new Essential Words. He also prints very neatly and legibly. In Maths Angus is also making steady progress and now recalls many basic facts and counting sequences by rote. He is also starting to solve number problems using the more advanced strategy of splitting numbers into parts, rather than counting on or back from the biggest number. Congratulations Angus this Top Performer is so well deserved.

Top Performer Room 6 The final Top Performer from Rata Room 6 this year is a delightful and talented young man named Olliver. At writing time Olliver gets his head down quickly and his ideas too. He can hear most of the sounds he needs and his letters are always so neat and carefully made. One of Olliver’s favourite times of the day is maths time. He works hard in his group and picks up new ideas quickly. He loves the challenge of learning new things about numbers. Whenever we look Olliver’s way he always has a smile on his face. He is kind towards all his friends and is a popular class member. Enjoy your well-deserved Christmas break Olliver. You have impressed all the teachers you have had this year. You are an awesome young man!!! REMINDERS: Last week of swimming next week for the whole school. It will take place in the afternoon, please remember to have swimming caps, googles, togs and a towel.
