2013 Vice President’s Report Doreen Morash

As your Vice President for 2013 I’ve had many enjoyable experiences The responsibility of arranging speakers, based on the club’s requests, has been very rewarding. Listening to a speaker’s expertise and sensing their inner joy r when they are talking about a favorite topic is a delight. Their personality becomes evident, as they delve into their chosen topic, and it is fun to see and hear the interaction that takes place with the speaker and the club members. We have a wonderful pool of knowledge within our own club and I always am amazed and thankful when this knowledge is offered so willingly. Working with our Executive and Assistants for the last two years has been a learning experience and educational. They are a concerned and caring group of people, who have had your best interests at heart, when any decisions have had to be made. Their dedication of so much personal time for the benefit of our club is admiral. I would like to thank John and Hugh for taking charge of the audio-visual equipment and set-up, when we have had speakers at our meetings. They lessened my stress considerably, and are great troubleshooters, as we never know when a problem can occur. During the year, we have had educational lectures on Roses, Bugs, the Value of trees, the Health of plants, prize winning Irises, Food Control, Carrots & Garlic. We’ve had a fantastic auction with Spe-cial Speaker Ted Baker and his Irresistible Irises and have profited as a club from his generous donation of the auction proceeds. As Excursion planner for this year, I’ve enjoyed organizing various trips. We visited Washington, USA, with many other members from Garden Clubs in the Okanagan, to see fields and fields of glorious tulips in full bloom. We’ve visited Dogwood & Bylands Nurseries to shop and see their operations. The Elysium Gardens were a delight to meander through with their huge, beautiful peonies, irises, and lovely hosta displays. This park-like garden offered a lovely setting for our picnic in the sunshine. The visit to South East Kelowna’s Cider Company was a hit also. Their organic fruit was made into delicious cider which we tasted with pleasure. We visited Bedroc Nursery in Salmon Arm and with Richard Radomske’s help were able to buy many of his own rooted stock of roses. We enjoyed a delicious lunch in one of Salmon Arm’s pubs when we were finished shopping for roses. During these excursions, it’s great getting to know other members of the club in a different setting. It’s been a full plate of activities, excursions and lectures in 2013 for our garden club.

2013 in Review President’s

Report Linda Edser

It has been a productive, exciting and creative year at the Kelowna Garden Club. We have had a great year of friendship and fun, but at the same time making a mean-ingful contribution to our community. As a result of the work of our wonderful and hardworking executive, assistants and volunteers we have accomplished the following: Fundraisers 2013: Our April Natures Gold membership discount sale; Annual Public Plant Sale at Guisachan Gardens in April; and in October the bulb only sale for our membership. Events: In July our juried flower show and extravaganza at Guisachan Gardens; three open garden days for club members in June, August and September; our summer potluck picnic at our new facility in July (followed by visit to Dick and Helen Bazett’s lilies); parlour shows each month; succulent exchange and on occasion Floral Art Exhibits, upcoming Christmas Party in December with entertainment. Workshops: Ikebana Workshop in April with Jeanne Bates, dish garden creating workshop, a Floral Arts Workshop in September with Dorothy Scott of BC Floral Arts and our Christmas Flower Arrangement Workshop in December. KGC Speakers 2013: March - Richard Radomski from Bedroc Roses; April - Allison Linklater of Westwold; May - An evening with Don Burnett; June - Hugh Philip; September - Andrea Gunner; October - Ken Salvail and in November an overview of the year with Judy Runzer. In June we had a Special Speaker – Ted Baker on the Irresistible Iris! This was open to the general public. Executive/Assistants Meetings: I have hosted at our home four executive meetings this year. The meeting in February included the assistants as well as the executive. Other Matters: We have moved into our new facility, which appears to be working out well. We made a change in KGC Constitution to eliminate the use of the words audit, auditors and auditing. Our agreement to share sound equipment with Plus 3’s and the Newcomers Club seems to have been a very good move. The KGC bursary to the Leaning Garden at UBCO was much appreciated. Members/volunteers did floral arrangements for the fundraisers/community events such as the CNIB function, the foodbank fundraising breakfast, cancer fundraising dinner, Annual Community in Blooms Conference and Anniversary of Benvoulin Church. We participated in, and presented reports on behalf of the Kelowna Garden Club at the Southern Interior Horticultural Association meetings in Armstrong in April

President report continued:

On a personal note, I wish to thank the entire executive, who do not know the meaning of the word “no” and only ask how they can further assist. Thank you to our assistants, who are always so helpful and the volunteers who jump at the chance to help in anyway they can. It is such a pleasure working with all of you…Thank You All!!

Treasurer Report

John Waddington I have maintained the Garden Club financial records in balance, paid invoices as received, entered moneys into our bank account as and when received, and reported on our financial situation at general and executive meetings. Our financial records for 2013 are available for members to view at any time by arrangement.

2013 Past President’s Report Rosemary Botner

As Past President I attended all executive meeting, in a non-voting and advisory capac-ity. I assisted with the Annual Flower Show as logistics and "Special Exhibits" coordinator and have acted as newsletter editor.

As Newsletter Editor, over the past year I have edited, published and arranged for duplication and distribution of 9 issues of Weeders’ Digest.

I also communicated notices and events to club members on an as-needed basis. Thank you again to Judy and Harv Bell for doing the mail-out of the paper copies of the newsletter. It has been a steep learning curve but a rewarding experience and I have

valued your comments and the trust you placed in me to deliver a quality product.

Newletter deadline is 10th of the month for the following issue. All articles and comments gratefully received [email protected]

2013 Publicity director’s report Dorothy Robison

Attended Executive Committee meetings, as called by the President.

Contacted individuals, magazines, and newspapers every month (and GardensWest and gardening clubs every two months) with details of our monthly speakers.

Attended the SIHA meeting in April, with Linda Edser, Judy Runzer and Rosemary Botner.

Member of Judy Runzer’s Flower Show committee

Got quotes for reusable banners that could be used for various KGC activities including Flower Show.

For the Flower Show, assisted Rosemary Botner with “special activities” which included organizing the musician, three demonstrators, and the invasive plants consultant. With Rosemary doing all the printing, she and I made a great many signs to direct and inform entrants and visitors, with a view to re-using them in 2014. The signs are stored in my garage.

Spent a full day at a garden on the Kelowna Garden Tour with Rosemary Botner to give visitors information about the KGC. We had a table set up with the club’s photo board, pamphlets, and other information.

Organized a sempervivum share with Gwenyth Greer. Bob Wilson provided garage space--and coffee.

Contacted various speakers who could possibly be a feature speaker in 2014 (this is a work in progress).

Stepped in, when asked, to fill a gap (greeting, speaker introduction.)

2013 Community Liaison REPORT

Wilma Schellenberger

As Community Liaison for the Kelowna Garden Club I attended KGC meetings and was involved in the following activities: • priced and helped to sell at the Kelowna Garden Plant Sale, and gave gardening advice as a

Master Gardener • priced and identified plant material, gave gardening advice at the KG Hospital Auxiliary

Plant Sale and helped with the sale in general for two days • organized and helped to create a large number of center pieces for the Community in

Bloom Green Thumb Garden Contest 2013 Awards celebration at the Benvoulin Heritage Church building with the help of a number of ladies from KGC

• coordinated the Green Thumb Garden Contest 2013 for the CiB Committee and arranged

for the judges (including KGC members) as well as the awards ceremony. I also served as a judge for 2 1/2 days. I acted as MC at the ceremony and gave out the awards with the help of Doreen Morash.

• I asked KGC members to participate in nominating gardens in many different categories

(17). I advertised the event at the club meetings, wrote an article for the Weeders’ Digest and distributed the press release to the media.

• I attended the CiB Conference and Awards Celebration in Kamloops and reported on the

activities involving KGC members at our round table discussions. • I promoted the KGC at all events I attended as Master Gardener and CiBloom Committee

member. It has been very rewarding to promote the KGC again this year at the numerous events I was involved in as a volunteer and citizen. Kudos go to Linda Edser and her team as well as all the volunteers who made this another successful year for the club. It has been great working with and for you. Thank you so much.

2013 Advertising

Director’s Report Alicja Paradzik

We had a good response from various local businesses this year for advertising in the Weeder’s Digest. Several advertisers have remained loyal and continue to advertise with us. Rosemary Botner is doing a fabulous job presenting the advertisements in the newsletter and the advertisements continue to provide a positive contribution to the overall appearance of our little publication. More importantly for our members, the advertising allows us to see the variety of products and services our advertisers have to offer. Let’s support these loyal advertisers by returning the favour and doing business with them.

Library reminder

Don’t forget to have a look at our collection of books and magazines at each meeting-there are

many from which to chose .

Please return your library book loans!

Special Thanks to

Jean Dangerfield and Marianna Boda for taking pictures at every opportunity for the Garden Club. And to Jean for maintaining the Photo Board. Bravo!

2013 parlour SHOW director’s REPORT Alice Hargreaves

It has been an interesting year for the Garden Club Parlour Show. We had some wonderful flower arrangements brought in throughout the year, and it has been a pleasure to view the different exhibits each month. I extend a sincere thank you to all the members who entered with flower arrangements and exhibits. In early February a list of parlour show class descriptions is prepared in time for the February executive meeting. The entire year’s list is then published in the March newsletter. Plant entries may be brought in March, April, May, June; and in July we have picnic table centerpieces and a picnic hat competition. Also entries may be brought in September, October, November; and in December we have table centerpieces at our Christmas party. Gardeners may use this list to plan their gardens with the parlor show in mind. The results of the winners of the entries are published in the newsletter monthly. The entries in the various classes are judged by our members. Volunteer judges need only to love flowers, no judging experience is necessary and there are resources available should they be interested. Thank you so much to the members who say yes when asked to judge. Trophies and Cups are awarded for certain class entries. Congratulations to this years winners: Jean Dangerfield, Evelyn and Ernie Burnett Trophy donated by Don Burnett; Marianna Boda, Iris Trophy in memory of Alex Rudy; Herbert Obst, Challenge Cup for Peonies; Judy Runzer, Lily Trophy donated by Valley Brand Fertilizer; Charmaine Waddington, Sweet Pea Challenge Cup; Bev Barnes, Lillian Jefferies Rose Trophy; Darlene Cross, Henry and Ella Metke Gladioli Trophy; Judy Runzer, Dahlia Cup donated by Kelowna and District Horticultural Society; Pauline Ferweda, Chrysanthemum Bowl donated by Kelowna and District Horticultural Society. This year concludes my two year term as Parlour Show Coordinator, which I have really enjoyed. I wish to thank everyone who helped with the parlour show throughout the years, and I would especially like to thank Sherrell Davidson who was always willing to take over when I was away.

2013 Plant sales report Alicja Paradzik

We DID it! We surpassed all our previous monetary intake records at this year’s Spring Plant Sale! What a great club we have! Every year we “tweak” our set up and try to make things better and this year we seem to have done things right. The number of volunteers was outstanding and the donations of plants were just right. It is absolutely overwhelming on the morning of the plant sale to see volunteers and plants arriving. Each and every one contributing in many different ways - donating, purchasing, pricing, labelling, moving, selling, setting up, displaying and cleaning up. It was a wonderful day. The weather cooperated and Don Burnett with the help of Hugh Philip made a terrific radio announcement promoting the sale. The master gardeners were on hand to answer all the difficult questions and helped with pricing, sorting, identifying plants and a myriad of miscellaneous tasks. Dorothy Robison made a wonderful banner which hung at the entrance to the sale. Rosemary Botner brought the KGC display and fielded a lot of questions from the public on the activities of the Garden Club. John Waddington set up a xeriscape display and many people were interested in acquiring more knowledge in that area.

This year we decided not to hold a full Fall Plant Sale and concentrate on Books & Bulbs. Everyone paid attention and brought a terrific variety of wonderful bulbs all neatly packaged and labelled. This made our job very, very easy. Outstanding donations were made by Dick Bazett (tremendous lily bulbs), Shirley Hathaway (huge number of beautiful tulip bulbs) and John Waddington (rare and unusual bulbs). At the end of the evening we had made more than in previous years. A very profitable evening! Thank you.

Watering Into the Fall:

We don’t normally think of winter conditions as

being similar to desert conditions but they are in that

plant material is not able to draw water from the

soil. Watering them deeply in the fall time will help

plants make it through the winter. As David

Beaulieu of About.com (Hyperlink to this article) puts it “Properly watering the

plants in fall, then, can be an effective means of minimizing injury to

trees and shrubs during the winter.”

He adds that we should water “our plants sparingly throughout early

autumn, until the time when the leaves of the deciduous trees fall and

then in late autumn, after the deciduous trees have dropped their

leaves, give both evergreen and deciduous trees

and shrubs a deep watering before the ground

freezes.”
