June 2016 Weeders’ Digest — 2
President’s message June 2016
Our June meeting is going to be different this year; it’s going to be a June Fair. I’ve been inviting mem-bers and special guests to set up displays and demonstrations for us to look, listen and learn from. So far, 20 presenters are ready to share their interests and hobbies from beekeeping to flower arranging and how to prepare an entry for the Flower Show, from pollinator friendly plants to crafts, from pruning to woodwork. And there’s room for more.
So, please, don’t be shy: share with us your special interest. We could even have a table of “My Favourite Garden Tool”, if enough people contacted me to say they’d bring theirs. Just one tool from 15 or 20 peo-ple would make a great table display. Call, text or email me to say you’d like to take part. 587 254 1616 or text 1 403 667 4541 or [email protected].
We will, of course, have the June Parlour Show set up in its usual place. Check out the classes, both judged and non-judged, to see what you could bring from your garden for us to admire. Every non-judged entry gets a point and the one with the most points (most entries) at the end of the year gets a prize. With a category that says “any one flower blooming in your garden except iris, peony and succulent” even I, with only a container of flowers to call my garden, could enter this one. Whether it’s an arrange-ment or just one bloom, bring it along to share with us.
We’ll also have the summer centrepiece competition. Winner is chosen by the highest number of ballots and receives a cash prize. And summer wouldn’t be summer without hats. For our decorated hat com-petition, again, winner is chosen by the highest number of ballots and receives a cash prize. Keep a look out for me: I shall be wearing a large, red, organza hat.
Our June Fair will have something for everyone so bring your friends and your family.
It’s been said, but it’s worth saying again: congratulations to Pat Zander and Linda Edser for organizing a very successful plant sale, and thanks to everyone who donated plants and to everyone who came to buy them.
Congratulations also to Etta and George Scotter, our newest Life Members. Other 25 year plus members are Dick Bazett, Gerry Jones-Evans, Ruth Kristensen and Brigitta Snyder. All of the Life Members have volunteered and continue to volunteer to run our club; it simply can’t operate without volunteers. Not everyone wants to be a director or an assistant; not everyone is able to be a treasurer. But if you do one thing, just one thing—bring a plate of cookies to a meeting or make the coffee (as we have over 100 members you’d get to do this once every 12 years!) or take a 2 hour “tour of duty” at the Flower Show—you’re helping to the run the club, and that makes you a volunteer.
Dorothy Robison
As you can see from the list on page 11, this club is made possible by its many volunteers. There is something for everyone. Could you help with coffee at a meeting? Bring goodies? Or maybe something more adventurous?
Thanks to Sherrell Davidson and Bev Thomas for refreshments at May meeting. For June Fair, Marian Pippolo will make coffee, Sherrell Davidson, Alicja Paradzic, Kaye Bruce, Karen McLaren, Eve Foran and Donna Buch have offered to bring goodies. Thanks in advance
This newsletter contains submissions from 18 members! Thank you!
Thanks to all Plant Sale donors and helpers and in advance, thanks to all those who make the Flower Show happen.
Would you consider job-shadowing our membership officer, Rosie, with a view to taking this position next year? Knowledge of EXCEL is very useful.
Do you enjoy this publication? The present editor has moved out of town and will only continue until December. So we need a new newsletter editor. Computer skills and some creativity are all you need. Make it your own, do it your way-Just get the news out! Talk to Rosemary [email protected]

2016 PLANT SALE REPORT
by co-ordinators Linda Edser and Pat Zander
This was a great year for our sale in many ways. The weather cooperated, and April 30th was sunny and warm; the amount and variety of donated plant material were impressive, and the crew of volunteers was hardworking, ef-fective and cheery. Last but not least, we made more money than ever before. As in the last couple of years, we received plants the evening before as well as early in the morning. This gave us an opportunity to do much of the pricing and organizing ahead, so that last minute donations were dealt with quickly as they came in. We were ready for our first customers on the dot of nine. And they were ready for the sale! Shopping was steady for most of the morning. We even had an impressive array of garden paraphenalia, which moved briskly as well. Linda and I thank the volunteers and donors very much. It took us all to make this a success.

Preparing for A Flower Show
Below are some tips to make exhibiting at flower shows easier for you and to help make this an
experience you want to continue each year. Remember, it is fun!
The most important item is to Read the Schedule thoroughly and take note of the details
which explain the criteria for the entry.
Choose the best possible quality of plant material to exhibit. The best time to cut blooms
is early morning or late evening when the flowers have the maximum amount of water in
their stems. Cut the stems as long as possible and place the flowers in warm water and
leave them for several hours or overnight to absorb as much water as possible. Re-cut
the stems before placing.
Arrive with adequate time to enter and place your entry. Check to see that your entry card
is correctly filled out so it can be correctly placed. You will use the entry tags provided
at the show. Fill in your name and address, the name of the flower and mark which class
you are entering. There will be someone available to help you.
It is important to name your exhibit as it adds to the educational aspect of the show and is
of interest to those attending the show.
Be sure your entries have enough water in their containers.
The judge’s decision is final, and remember that they have done their best to evaluate the
entries.
Also remember, that the judges make their decision on how the exhibit appears at the time
of judging. Accept both success and failure with good grace.
If you do have a complaint about the show or the judging, contact the show chairman.
Check to see when you may pick up your exhibits and be on time.
Judging standards used are those of the BC Ctouncil of Garden Clubs
The garden club will not be responsible for loss or damage to exhibitors’ containers and
personal effects.
Exhibiting should be enjoyable. Winning is great, but it is not the sole purpose of entering
the show.

Tip of the Month from Sue Bannerman
Before talking about May’s Tip of the Month, I wanted to follow up on a question asked about April’s Tip. The question was whether the use of Irish Spring Soap would have a negative impact on bees. This question was posed to Fearon Blair and her response was “it seems that bees are attracted to smells …so hanging (sweet smelling) soap to repel deer might in fact help attract bees…”
May Tip of the Month, from Jean Dangerfield, is a clever,
inexpensive gardeners toolkit. The toolkit consists of a plastic
rectangular scrub bucket with 2 containers added to hold your tools.
Jean uses one large and small plastic Folgers coffee cans but you could
also use plastic milk cartons or other such items cut to the appropriate
size. Small tools go in the small
container, medium sized ones in the
larger container and the left over
space in the bucket nicely fits those
larger items like hand rakes etc.
Voila a compact, inexpensive tool-
kit. Thanks Jean.
Digital photos will be taken on the day of your Open Garden and will be included in the Power Point presentation in November. Please note, you do not have to open your garden to share digital photos of your garden for the power point.
Finally, this is fun! We hope you will consider opening your garden for all the members to see. Happy gardening!! Fran
Hello gardeners, Great news from Dorothy
that we can now offer friends and neighbors a
one year single membership if they will open
their gardens to us. They will also receive
two bags of Natures Gold so I think it's a great
incentive and hopefully will also increase our
membership. Anyone who hosts an Open
Garden receive a gift from KGC of two 40L
bags of Natures Gold product. Only
members will visit.
