HOUSTON (AP) — CristianMendoza is scribbling with ablack marker on a miniaturewhiteboard. Suddenly, hewheels around and wields themarker like a dagger, menac-ing fellow 5-year-old JosephSimon who giggles and covershis eyes with two small magni-fying glasses.
Their teacher, Sara Estrada, doesn’t see the wrestlingmatch at first. “Cristian,” shefinally calls. Both boys stopand look up with sheepishgrins.
“I try to meet their needs. I’mnot sure I am anymore,”Estrada, who has been teach-ing for 27 years, says of herpre-kindergarten class at LionLane School in Houston, which has grown to 25 stu-dents even as it lost its fulltimeteacher’s aide.
All over Texas, school dis-tricts have laid off teachers, support staff and administra-tors to cope with steep reduc-tions in state education fund-ing. But even with job opportu-
nities suddenly scarce, sevenof Estrada’s colleagues —nearly half the pre-K center’s17 teachers — are resigning atthe end of the year. They sayfewer aides and larger classsizes means teachers spendmore time with potty trainingand runny noses than teachingthe ABCs and basic math likein previous years.
It’s a sign that the financialpinch is even being felt by well-to-do districts like Houston’sSpring Branch IndependentSchool District, whichincludes Lion Lane School.Classroom advocates say thisis the inevitable result of anunwavering commitment tokeeping taxes low. But otherscounter it’s simply the newface of a more efficient way to
educate the state’s children.The Republican-dominated
state Legislature cut $4 billionin education funding over thenext two years while eliminat-ing an additional $1.4 billionfrom grant programs, eventhough statewide enrollmentis increasing by about 80,000students annually.
Districts endured a cut of 6percent this school year andare facing cuts of between 2and 9 percent in 2012-2013 —with those in property-taxwealthy areas looking at largerpercentage reductions thanpoor districts. This year’s cutswere softened by a one-timeinfusion of $830 million in fed-eral funding which won’t beavailable next year.
