1 Introduction

1.1 Purpose of this DocumentIn collaboration with technology producing company ‘LifeTec’, this document proposes a project pitch that will not only address the high demand for assistive technology but also address a particular area of struggle. The central focus is to create a device/technology/application for individuals whom require home and/or work modifications in order to achieve areas or particular functions of difficulty. This project will be approached as a group case study covering various sections on the device, the device chosen is in form of a ‘drag n drop’ generator promotion application. It is believed that this application has the potential to impact current stigmas and could also provide gateway to innovations. Throughout this document will be parts and sections that will critique, analyze and evaluate the validity of this device.

1.2 Scope of this documentThis document will be centered on the device itself however, it will also cover multiple sections of intuity, and how effective will it interact with the target audience etc. This project pitch will cover:

The problem statement (The issue or circumstance to be addressed) The project target audience, stakeholders, owners, partners The project goals and objectives to reach The overall device design The overall device requirements The device testing

The components that will be out of the scope are:

The marketing scheme Comparison to global scale

2 BackgroundWhat is the background of the project? Why is it being done? What problem are you addressing? What is the value for the client and user?

The ‘Vizualize’ app addresses a common stigma in today’s society and that this this caution of attaining right of a product etc., without initially visualising or encountering curiously. This app has the potential to spark a cycle of improvements to enforce that interests in Life Tec’s technology is sustained. ‘Lifetec’ embarks in a new strategy to encourage, people of all difficulties and disabilities to consider the requirement of home or work modifications to not only address a specific problem but to also improve their general lives. However, not all are willing to go that far within the process of undertaking additional technology for multiple reasons. Some are: lack of knowledge around technology, perspective of technology could be negative, not seen as adequate or efficient. And so in collaboration with Life Tec, it is believed that

this application will be able to give them an initial insight into what exactly is adjusted or implemented in their homes.

3 Target audienceThe main target audience for the application will be the elderly population. The main goal for the product is to assist the elderly with technology that will allow them to visualise any planned improvements, maintenance and modifications within the comfort of their own homes. The reason the product is needed is to save the required time and money needed when making changes to homes. The key human factors that will influence the way the audience interacts with the application is vision and touch. The vision and touch aspect may be affected due to the deteriorating of the senses in older ages. The application will be designed to assist the elderly by providing a simple UI with large text and basic easy to see colours and by also providing additional touch cues within the application. The research that inspired the idea of the application was found within the myagedcare government site that provides home maintenance services for the elderly (Government, 2015). The application can support the services provided by the government and assist the elderly with their situations.

3.1 Audience beliefsPlanning improvements, maintenance and modifications within a household requires a dedicated amount of time and money. The elderly will have a positive reaction towards the application as it allows themselves and others to organise the changes without having to hire a third party. It also assists the elderly and allows them to have full control over their situation. The elderly may feel intimidated by the technology however; the application will be designed in a simplistic manner to assist and encourage the elderly with minimal technology knowledge to use it. The main point to avoid is an overbearing UI and design that will confuse the elderly interacting with the application.

3.2 Audience demographicsThe targeted audience of the Medicine Dispenser are the elderly and the demographic details of the audience consist of the following:

• 50 years old and above• Male or Female• Limited Knowledge of technology

The only specific aspect that will influence the way the audience will interact with the technology is their knowledge of technology. However, the product has been designed to factor in this influence by providing a simple UI that requires limited knowledge of technology.

4 Problem StatementAustralia can be described as an ageing population because of the baby booming generation slowly taking toll. In effect the demand for additional care and assistive technology have spiked over the span of the last few years. In present day, a large majority of the elderly population are faced with countless daily functions that prove to be difficult, and as a result require some form of assistance whether it is by a family member or technology that could implement a solution. Because the elderly population and modern technology often do not come to terms, this leads to the people to feel hesitant or doubtful of the technology’s effectiveness; comfortability is important amongst these folks. Consequently, they are reluctant to hire these lifesaving tools. Perhaps it is not the lack of knowledge around modern technology that infiltrates a negative impact but rather a lack of communication to project the usefulness and safety precautions this technology acquires.

5 Goals Develop an app that the elderly population can use (contain a user

interface that is very simple and easy to interact with) Promote life Tec products and increase sales Decrease the total number of elderly people that face difficulty with

daily functions

5.1 Usability Objectives A high level of usability is required when developing technology for the age demographic that is being appealed to with this design. In order to achieve this high standard of usability, the design must be refined to the point where it can be given to someone and they will be able to use and understand it will little to no input from the developer.

The initial input should be positive as it should take little effort to understand how the app functions. The app is objected to fulfil the requirements set out by the target user. Satisfaction will be achieved by designing a very simplistic and straight forward user interface.

The application is also objected to be adaptable, meaning that the application should constantly be updated with latest discoveries. Discoveries in terms of how to attract more audience in this age range, what methods to implement to improve the application throughout.

The usability of the app will be measured when a test audience will use the application. After the app releases, the most efficient way to measure its success is by monitoring whether or not life Tec experiences an increase in website views or better yet, product hires/purchases.

5.3 Deliverables Upon completion, the client will receive an app that allows its users to truly visualize what their products would look like in their homes. To do this, the camera on the user’s phone will be used along with the app.

A very simple user interface will be delivered to the clients and the users to make sure everyone can use it regardless how poor their skills with technology are. Due to the age of the targeted users, a colour assist mode will be included in the options. This will make it easier for certain people to use the app as it will adjust gamma, colour, contrast and saturation levels.

The app will contain a tool which allows users to drag and drop lifetec products into photos taken by the camera on the phone. To make sure the products inserted into the images are scaled properly and that certain products can fit into certain areas or onto certain objects, the app will have mechanics that allow it to estimate size of objects and provide an appropriately scaled image of the product.

As time goes on, more products will be created by lifetec. As this happens, all of the new products will be added into the app in the form of updates to ensure that the users are able to visualize all of the products that are available in their homes.

6 Alpha Design

6.1 Structural Design

Figure 1- Design Element 1 (Hierarchy Chart)

Design element one is represented as a hierarchy chart. Due to our target audience’s requirements, we have structured a minimalistic design that is easy to navigate but also easy to understand. Majority of the time spent will be on the Drag n Drop page where the user will be required to import an image to have the overlay of an assisting technology in place.

Within the three main stages of this application, majority of the time spent will be on the ‘Drag n Drop’ stage and all sections that are positioned to the right group of information that are stemming off the main three.

Figure 2- Design Element 2 (Venn Diagram)

Page 5

Page 10: Weebly · Web viewList each section within the document, and who has been assigned to complete that section. Before submission, list those that contributed to each section in the

Design Element 2 showcases the merging of factors that deem the applications validity. The information is grouped within headers explaining the value in each component. By using this form of data, it is believed that this will project a clear picture as to how effective the application will be but also the points that were not met. Because the application is a promotional tool and not an app to purchase or hire assistive technology, an external site is required for users that adhere to further information. The attributes within the user section was supported by the persona – Figure 3 (Mr. Johnson).

The specific design techniques that will be implemented in this application are grouped in 3 main sections, aimed to satisfy the target user.

Usability - Interactive design - Easy navigation - Relevant and straightforward content- Readability - Ability to recommend

Accessibility- Able to be used in any environment - Dysfunctional to visual impaired users- Dysfunctional to touch impaired users- Handling state is adequate, does not require complex buttons or

functions- Ability to focus screen

Improve Life- Betters the knowledge of LifeTec - Improves awareness around technology- Convenient to user that is curious of purchasing/hiring- Increase comfortability around LifeTec

6.2 Visual Design

In explanation towards the mock screens presented, the visualize app incorporates elements that are not only relevant towards the target audience but is also efficient in achieving the applications main objective.

Layout: The layout chosen is not only simplistic but it is also usable to almost anyone. The reason for this is that, by keeping the design simple, minimalistic the audience will interpret this app with little to no effort. By using

modern, well know symbols including the camera symbol as well as the positioning of the different elements, the layout is easy to navigate through.

Graphics: The choice to use the mild colour blue, as the primary colour helps to send off a friendly aura to the audience, to assist in delivering the sense that this application is user friendly. The choice of font also assists in overall readability. Especially due to the target audience being generally around the age of 50+, this is a vital component.

Style: ‘Visualize’, incorporates a simple style, a style that is not like most complex applications that require period of time for the user to become familiar, but more of a style that has one simple objective. To promote and help increase awareness of Life Tec products.

6.3 Supporting Design Tools

Figure 3 – Persona (Mr. Johnson)

The persona is seen as an accurate design tool as it directly informs the designer of the users’ needs but most importantly the characteristics of the user. Mr. Johnson, is the average tax payer who is at that age where he requires a bit of assistance. He is not as active as he used to be however he embarks in having the same functionality as he did previously, something that

Life Tec centers on.
