Daniel 1:4-5 young men in whom there was no blemish, but good-looking, gifted in all wisdom, possessing knowledge and quick to understand, who had ability to serve in the kings palace, and whom they might teach the language and literature of the Chaldeans. 5 And the king appointed for them a daily provision of the kings delicacies and of the wine which he drank, and three years of training for them, so that at the end of that time they might serve before the king. I find two things extremely interesting about this section of scripture that is explaining the capture of Israel by the Babylonians. We can learn a lot about our enemy if we watch his tactics. The first thing that stands out to me is WHOthe enemy chose to take back to Babylon. He chose young, very smart subjects for his mission. He chose those who were hungry for knowledge that could one day serve him in his kingdom. Why did he choose this particular group? The answer is easy. He knew if he could convince them of his ideology, he could use them to change the entire culture of Israel. He knew they were the trend setters of their generation, and if he won their hearts; they would help him win the hearts of all of Israel. The other thing I find interesting is HOWhe chose to change them. The Bible says that they were appointed daily provisions of the kings delicacies and of the wine that he drank. What does this really mean? In my opinion, this wine, while it was really wine; represents so much more. I think it is a hint to something much more sinister. I think wine here represents the king capturing their minds. Let me explain what I mean. In Proverbs 31 (yes, the scripture we often use to describe great women of faith), we see a story hidden in the text. It s the story of a conversation between a mom and her son who had aspirations of becoming a great king. The mom in the story of Proverbs 31 reminds her son that he needs to live a life that is set apartfrom the rest of his culture. She says to him in verse four, It is not for kings to drink wine.In other words, if you want to be better; be different. I think the king of Babylon was aware that if he altered the minds of these young people with the best of his wine (his ideology), he could warp their minds to the point of no return. I think this was a brainwashing of sorts. What was true for the young man in Proverbs 31 is also true for us. We cannot drink the wine of our enemy if we are to stay the course for our King. Don’t Drink the Wine!

Daniel 1:4-5 …young men in whom there was no blemish, but good-looking, gifted in all wisdom, possessing knowledge and quick to understand, who had ability to serve in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the language and literature of the Chaldeans. 5 And the king appointed for them a daily provision of the king’s delicacies and of the wine which he drank, and three years of training for them, so that at the end of that time they might serve before the king.
