TONIGHT’S STARTER—RH JAKE ODORIZZI (6-8, 3.35)

Ê LAST START—On Fri at NYY, yielded 5 runs on a season-high-tying 3 HR (also May 31 at BAL)…allowed two 2-run HR (Alex Rodriguez, Greg Bird) and a solo HR (Brian McCann)…all 3 hits allowed were homers…only allowed 5 baserunners (3-HR, 2-BB), and all 5 came around to score (see below)…his line: L, 6.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 8 SO, 3 HR, 113 pit, 69 str.

Ê Has lost consecutive starts on the heels of a club-record-tying streak of 5 straight no-decisions.

Ê BOX SCORE ODDITY—According to Baseball Reference, the only other pitcher in club history to pitch as deep into a game as Odorizzi’s last start (6.2 IP) and allow every baserunner to score was Geremi Gonzalez on June 22, 2003 at FLA (7-IP, 2-H, 1-BB, 3-R)…he became the first AL pitch-er to pitch that deep and allow at least 5 runs, matching his total number of baserunners, since TOR Steve Parris on July 23, 2001 at NYY.

Ê UNSUPPORTED—Has received the lowest run support in the AL at 3.16 R/9 IP (133-IP, 48-RS)…the lowest mark by a qualifying pitcher in club history is 3.63 R/9 IP by Alex Cobb in 2014…the Rays have scored 2 runs or fewer for him 16 times in 23 starts and have given him a total of 11 runs in his 8 losses.

Ê ABOUT THAT RECORD—Only two other AL pitchers have an ERA as low as Odorizzi’s and a losing record: OAK/HOU Scott Kazmir (7-10, 2.63 ERA) and LAA Hector Santiago (8-9, 3.24 ERA)…the pitcher with the lowest ERA in club history to finish with a losing record was Jeremy Hellickson (10-11, 3.10) in 2012…in his career, is 17-23 (.425) with a 3.81 ERA, and the only other active pitch-ers (min. 50 starts) with as low an ERA and lower winning percentage are Tyson Ross and Andrew Cashner.

Ê SINCE HIS RETURN—Is 2-3 with a 4.43 ERA (63-IP, 31-ER) in 11 starts since returning from the 15-day DL (left oblique strain)…ranked 5th in the AL with a 2.47 ERA at the time of his injury.

Ê ROAD IMPROVEMENT—Seeking his first road win since May 31 at BAL…is 3-5 with a 3.94 ERA (77.2-IP, 34-ER) on the road, and has yielded 2 runs or fewer in 7 of his 13 road starts…in 2014, recorded a 6.32 ERA (68.1-IP, 44-ER) in 14 road starts last season and had the largest home-road differen-tial in the majors (min. 100 IP)…it was the 2nd highest in club history among season qualifiers—only Mark Hendrickson (6.53 in 2005) was higher.
