Seattle Design Commission’s 2016 Design Excellence Awards

Participants for this mobile workshop will visit four public projects that received the Seattle Design Commission’s 2016 Design Excellence Awards. The Seattle Design Commission (SDC) advises the Mayor, City Departments, and the City Council on the design and aesthetics of City-funded projects and projects that require long-term or permanent use of the right-of-way. These award winning projects exemplify the design commissions’ mission – Design Excellence in the Public Realm, Design Practices that foster Innovative Sustainable Development, and designs that promote a world-class example of sustainable urban design for City facilities.

Pike Pine Corridor

This mobile workshop will include a discussion of the codes and incentives for the Pike Pine corridor, a tour of recent developments that made use of these guidelines and incentives, and a discussion of the lessons learned in this area.

Roger MillarSecretary of Transportation Roger Millar was appointed in August 2016. He joined WSDOT as deputy secretary in October 2015 and was appointed acting secretary in

February 2016. Millar oversees an agency of 6,800 employees, with responsibility for 18,600 lane miles of highway, 3,294 bridges, general aviation airports, passenger- and freight-rail programs, and Washington State Ferries, the nation’s largest ferry system.

Millar is a second generation civil engineer with 38 years of experience in the transportation arena. During that time, he has worked in construction, design, planning, research, policy development, management and administration in both the public and private sectors. Prior to joining WSDOT, he served for five years as vice president of Smart Growth America, a national not-for-profit organization, providing technical assistance to state transportation agencies in Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, Tennessee and Vermont. Millar also served as director of the National Complete Streets Coalition.

Charles R. WolfeCharles R. (Chuck) Wolfe, M.R.P., J.D. provides a unique perspective about cities as both a long time writer about urbanism worldwide and an attorney in Seattle, where he

focuses on land use and environmental law and permitting. He is also Founder and Principal Advisor at the Seeing Better Cities Group and an Affiliate Associate Professor in the College of Built Environments at the University ofWashington, where he teaches land-use law at the graduate level. Chuck is an avid traveler, photographer, and writer, and contributes on urban development topics to several publications, including Planetizen, CityLab/The Atlantic Cities, The Atlantic, The Huffington Post, Grist, seattlepi.com, and Crosscut.com. He blogs at myurbanist.com.

Chuck also speaks nationally and worldwide, including recent and pending engagements in Sweden, Australia and Scotland. Before Seeing the Better City, his first book, Urbanism Without Effort, was published in electronic form by Island Press in 2013.
