Wednesday 22nd April MATHS Okay, we are continuing to develop our understanding of decimals and fractions. YOU MUST always remember decimals are 10ths, 100ths, 1,000ths as a denominator and if you are not sure write it out into columns to identify the value of each number. With this in mind have a look at this example: Write the fraction out into the correct column. 6 100ths = 0.06 (100ths is the second column after the decimal point). 6 10ths = 0.6 (10ths is the first column after the decimal point). 65 100ths is a bit trickier! Start backwards with the 5, 5 100ths (second column after the decimal), then add the 6 next to it (should be in the 10ths column) = 0.65. Here is another problem This is just the same as turning the denominator into a 10 or 100 or 1,000. I will start with 100 first and if both the numerator and denominator end in a zero I can convert into to 10ths easily. REMEMBER what I do to the top I have to do to the bottom, so 100 divided by 4, or 4 x ? = 100. Remember, if you get stuck, read through past pages first, then if you are still stuck, click the Padlet link on Year 5 page, I will check in at least every hour to help. YOU MUST always remember decimals are 10ths, 100ths, 1,000ths as a denominator and if you are not sure write it out into columns to identify the value of each number. With this in mind have a look at this example:

Write the fraction out into the correct column. 6 100ths = 0.06 (100ths is the second column after the decimal point). 6 10ths = 0.6 (10ths is the first column after the decimal point). 65 100ths is a bit trickier! Literacy I want you to first look back at yesterday’s writing, read it through carefully and make 10 improvements! Next, I would like you to work through Autumn Term: Workout 7 and 8 please. In both sections pay particular attention to question 6, when it asks you to re-write I mean seriously re-write, using everything you have. Now out of these two sections, apply the punctuation and interesting elements to yesterday’s writing to make it perfect.

Spelling Here are your new spellings, it is so important to understand their meanings so you can incorporate them into your writing. So, write them out and learn them and also look up what they mean if you are unsure, use a dictionary if you have one rather than just Google it. Keep practicing. Year 4 words Year 5 words The apostrophe shows ownership

Wednesday 22nd April

Guided reading So let us after lunch (1pm) post any issues we had with this first chapter. We can spend about half an hour going over sentences and phrases you were not sure of. Try and help each other with what you think and we will pool our knowledge. Now fingers crossed we are all set for these questions. Make sure you read through the pages to find the answer and I will expect the exact quote from the text unless I have asked for your opinion.

Chapter one.

1. What does the quote, ‘The day began as usual,’ imply to the reader?

2. What do you think an alchemical stove is?

3. How much do it cost to go to the school for a morning?

4. Why do you think Sabryna and her siblings were always the last to arrive at school?

5. The farm owner, Mr Strongarm, had bought a new fertiliser that made the grain ‘pop up like a rabbit out of a hole.’ What do you think that means?

6. When Sabryna was walking through the village and when she was at Mr and Mrs Strongarm’s house, she saw many things and she compared them to what she had got. Write a paragraph to describe the feelings that these objects and sights would invoke in her?

7. Do you think Mrs Strongarm likes Pa?

8. Based on the name ‘Beakling’, what animal we would know, best describes it and why?

9. ‘Her mind wandered up the mountain, where the river spilled from a spring…’ Describe to me what was happening in detail, was her mind walking up the mountain?

10. Can you relate to the plea of Dia (the river spirit). Can you think of anything that is happening in the world today that compares with Dia?

11. Why did Dia say that Sabryna did the right things? Give me examples of what Sabryna does, that are the right but hard thing choices in her life.

12. Why do you think Sabryna found the silver coins, what were they for, how would you use them and what would you do if you were faced with this decision?
