Wednesday Night Classes P. 8 • Celebrate Recovery P. 10

MESSENGERHave I told you that I’m a map guy? I don’t work too hard to keep

this a secret. There’s just something about maps that I like. I honestly could sit and look at a detailed map of the world for hours.

Part of it, I think, is that I’m a very visual person. Seeing things from a “map’s perspective” piques my imagination. In one sweeping glance I can see the mountain ranges, rivers and roads.

Did you know that in Google Maps, you can click and hold that little yellow man icon—and “drop him” into the map basically anywhere in the world (where the camera truck has visited)? Am I the only one who enjoys going on “tours” with that little yellow man? Recently, some friends of ours moved to Dakar, the capital city of Senegal in Western Africa. How amazing is it that I can actually “visit” Dakar right here on my computer screen! I can drive up and down the roads. I can look into the little street-side shops selling vegetables and magazines, observing people in the flow of their everyday lives. I can pray for this missionary couple there, knowing they are going to a place with mosques and prayer towers scattered throughout the city.

There’s another thing I really appreciate about maps: they show me how to get places. Maps open up pathways—and help me navigate to places that I’ve never been before. For an adventurer like me, that is a true gift!

As we walk into a new ministry year

here at King Street Church, you’re

going to hear me talking a good bit about pathways.

Jesus talked about this in John 14:6 when He said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Don’t read too quickly over that first part of the verse. Jesus declared that He is the WAY. Several other translations use the word road. No matter how you say it, this is exceedingly good news! Jesus is telling us that there is actually a WAY for all of us to get to God the Father! There’s a road—a trail—a pathway.

Pathways create access. They invite us to explore. They make it possible to get places we’ve never been before. They spark something very positive in our mind and imagination. One of the most dreaded signs we might encounter on a trip are the two horrible words: Road Closed. Ugh! It’s like a huge No! is being shouted at us. We’re being told that we’re not allowed to go that way. It’s really a horrible feeling when you think about it. Even if there are detour signs, we’re left wondering how far out of our way the new path will take us.

On the other hand pathways are open roads. At the risk of being overly dramatic—pathways really do say Yes! I wonder if that isn’t why so many people have loved The Wizard of Oz through the years. I think it’s more than Dor-othy’s red shoes and the brainless tin man. It might have a lot to do with the invitation to “follow the yellow brick road.” It’s a pathway to adventure and hope.

As we walk into a new ministry year here at King Street Church, you’re going to hear me talking a good bit about pathways. And for good reason. The fact is, our church can be quite complex (and yes—even confusing) for a first-time guest. Actually, it can be confusing to someone who has been here for years—whether it’s finding a parking spot, entering our building from one of our many entrances or navigating our three floors to find a classroom.

We’re also taking to heart the numerous responses in our recent church-wide survey that expressed how difficult it can be here at King Street to make personal connections. To the

question: “What would you say is your greatest need as an attender of our church?” one person simply said: “How to successfully feel integrated and needed.” We hear you. I hear you.

Which is why pathways are so important. We want to help simplify pathways TO the building, THROUGH the building, and more importantly—INTO community and spiritual growth! We want to help you take the next step in your walk with God.

I will be doubling my efforts to address these things in the weeks and months to come. We want you to hear Yes! not Road Closed! We want you to SEE the pathway, and then enthusiasti-cally take the necessary steps in your life to grow and connect. My prayer is that these pathways create access, invite you to explore and make it possible for you to get places (spiritually!) that you’ve never been before!

Pastor Jody thanks the Lord for the seven interns who were very productive and displayed a level of com-mitment within our church for the summer. Our intern program provides opportunity for us to continue to live out our commitment to raise up the next generation of leaders. The interns described their experience as one that affirmed their choice to minister and expressed that they had an excellent experience. Pastor Jody listed events that he is looking forward to in the fall. All Volunteer Vision Night will be held on Wednesday, August 29. Co-mission Catalyst Night will be held on Monday, Novem-ber 5. Pastor Jody described his excitement for Celebrate Recovery scheduled to begin on October 1. Adam Keath is building teams that will be involved in this ministry. Pastor Jody shared that the elders continue to be involved in anointing, baptism and partnership services and classes.

Executive Pastor’s Report:Pastor Don Baker announced that Partner-

ship classes will be held on September 16, 23 and 30. The search for a Worship Associate continues.

that the Adult Ministries Co-mission is working on a program for teacher development to encourage more individuals to volunteer as teachers.

• Children’s Ministry – Sue Washabaugh shared praises and planning from the Children’s Min-istry Co-mission. Vacation Bible School went very well. It included 200 children in attendance and 18 commitments for Christ. The bookbag

event was a success and stories were shared about children who received bookbags in past years now giving of their time to participate in this year’s handout. Upcoming events include Promotion Sunday, training on August 14 and an open house for first graders and middle school children. On September 9 elementary students will be invited to have lunch with their Sunday school teachers and parents will be introduced to the new check-in system. Becky Hann shared what a big asset Maddie Sollenberger was as the summer intern. The co-mission asks for prayers for more volunteers.

• Finance – Jeff Goetz gave an update on the details discussed in the Finance Co-mis-sion’s meeting on July 23. A representative from Merrill Lynch was on hand to provide updates on the Endowment and Generation Next Step Funds. Funds have been received from Bequest/Estates Funds since the last board meeting. The Endowment Fund will receive 90%, with Local Outreach and Mission each receiving 5%. The church sponsored 67 Rhodes Grove campers this year. This included 38 chil-dren and 29 youth. The co-mission received 52 student grant applications and all have been reviewed and approved. Wednesday evening meals will resume in September and the cost will remain at $4 for adults, $3 for children under 18 with a maximum of $10 total for a family. Ken Adams reviewed the July finan-cial report and noted that the monthly giving was above the monthly budget. He also noted that spending was well below our budgeted amount. Overall the YTD giving and spend-ing are below the church’s budgeted amount.

• Local Outreach – Tom Knepper gave infor-mation on the co-mission’s quarterly meeting. There were 28 people in attendance. The devotional was presented by Don Baker and those in attendance found it to be power-ful and effective for ministry leaders. There were representatives from Rhodes Grove and Camp Joy-El that shared the positive events

that they experienced over the summer. • Missions – Scott Bert recounted the discus-

sion the co-mission had on how to choose a new Barnabas Team. A motion was approved for a special gift to Regent College of the Caribbean in Jamaica for the roof on their multipurpose building. Scott pointed out that the co-mis-sion approved donating toward the Haiti youth group trip. Also, the co-mission approved a special one-time gift to go toward Chris Little’s church planting efforts. A motion to approve supporting Karli Frelin and Campus Outreach through the Affiliate Ministry Support passed.

• Personnel Relations – Kim Shatzer reported on the upcoming staff picnic and the ongoing search for a Worship Associate. A motion to approve the sourcing for two part time positions titled Creative Arts Associate and Production Associate for the Worship Arts Department was approved. The positions will be offered to interns first and then advertised as needed.

• Property – Jim Goetz reported that the new LED lights at the ministry center parking lot have been installed. He outlined the usage and repairs required for our 1990 International church bus. The Property Co-mission supports the recommendation of the staff to scrap this vehicle. A motion to sell the bus to a scrap dealer was approved. Jim presented a request from Children’s Ministry for an upgrade to the nursery door locking system for security reasons. The doors will be locked during the services and entrance will be allowed after ringing the bell and being identified. A motion to approve the upgrades for security locks for the nursery was approved.

• Student Ministry – Penny Poorman pointed out that even though the number of students participating in the Chambersburg Project was down, many projects were completed. Penny gave an update on the students’ trip to Haiti to conduct Vacation Bible School. Even though they were not able to conduct VBS each day

5

as planned, they felt they were drawn closer to God as they shared with 150 children. On a day when they could not go to the church, they were able to travel to an orphanage to interact with the children there. Penny listed upcoming planned events which include Sixth Grade Open House, Promotion Sunday and Wednesday night activities which will begin on September 5. Penny asked that all pray for more volunteers to participate in the Road Crew.

• Worship Arts – Chuck Schussler outlined the items discussed during the August 6 meeting of the Worship Arts Co-mission. He reported about the Organ Committee’s progress on the organ upgrade. The hope is to have all four keyboards upgraded by sometime in Novem-ber. Chuck reviewed a proposal from Tyler Roberts for antenna combiners to consolidate the wiring and individual antennas behind the racks in the Sanctuary and the Baker Center. A motion to approve the purchase of four antenna combiners was approved.

Administrative Report:Ken Adams stated that the former office

demolition has been completed with additional parking provided. He also reported that we are currently gathering quotes on the restructure of our main Sanctuary parking lot. A drawing of the proposed changes was presented and reviewed. The plan is to have the lot completed before year’s end. Ken presented the details of terms of an agreement with the seller of a local property on North Second Street. A motion to approve the terms as presented for the purchase of the property was approved. Ken announced that the courtyard improvement is on hold as the Core Team is investigating possibilities to improve hallway traffic flow from a different, more effective perspective. A drawing of the proposed plan was distributed and reviewed by the board. A motion to approve funds for preliminary drawings to be developed was approved.

New Business:Glenn Watson gave an overview of the

ongoing process for the construction of the new Franklin County Courthouse along with details of the current property line situation. A motion to give permission for our Business Manager to sign the petition to the Borough of Chambersburg to vacate Central and Mont-gomery alleys was approved

(These highlights are taken from minutes written by Karen Byers, Recording Secretary for the Board of Administration. Board meetings are open to members of King Street Church. Unabridged copies of the minutes from the August meeting will be available at the church office after they are approved at the next meeting.)

How to Know When It’s Time to Quit by Nancy FritzPrayer Ministry

In the year 2000, I retired from Camp Joy-El, where I had the joy and privilege of serving the Lord for 31 years. Six months later Wilbur retired from Grove Manufacturing Company. During these years our children finished their education and were already assuming adult responsibilities. On the dark side of things, we had just experienced the sad and difficult closing of a church plant that never quite made it.

We knew the reputation of King Street Church: they were biblically sound, friendly, had good preaching and teaching, a wonderful children’s program and lots of good music! We visited and soon felt at home; we knew this is where the Lord wanted us.

We had been praying and discussing the possibility of beginning an Intercessory Prayer Ministry. After a few months of seeking the Lord’s direction, we made an appointment to talk with Pastor Pat Jones. After telling him what the Lord had laid on our hearts, he leaned over his desk, looked us in the eye and said, “You didn’t know this, but I’ve been praying for someone to oversee a Prayer Ministry at KSC for seven years.”

We were already attending the Saturday Night Prayer Meeting and soon were asked to oversee this. The Lord planted a goal in our hearts to have a program that would have people interceding in prayer during all the Sunday morning services. We were able to begin this when Pastor Pat said we could meet in an upstairs conference room. This was in one of the buildings that was torn down when major construction started to build Baker Center. It was following this construction that the Prayer Room became a reality.

We never had a flood of people who came

to pray for an hour, but the Scripture says, “For where two or three are gathered, there am I with them.”

We simply prayed for things we knew about: KSC staff, Sunday school classes and teachers, special events, missionaries, grieving families, etc. The weekly Prayer Sheet began about 2012.

So, back to my question: How do you know when to quit? Ask God! Keep on asking! He will answer, perhaps not in the way you expect. He did this with me in regard to quit making a weekly prayer sheet. (Maybe I’ll write about that in the future.) God bless you all and please never stop praying!

KSC Summer Interns Updates

Mitchell Bowser (Worship) I have been the worship intern this summer and it has been an amazing experience! I have loved working at King Street with the other worship staff and the rest of the interns. I am heading to Cedarville University this year to major in worship, and this internship has really taught me a lot about worship ministry and all that surrounds it, including leading others and dealing with the technology, as well as how crucial it is to keep God as your solid foundation. I am very excited to continue pursuing this in college and possibly beyond, and I am so thankful for the opportunities I’ve been given through this internship and through this church!

Bryce Mentzer (Video)This has been my second summer at King Street Church, as an intern. I have been serving on this team since April of 2017. In this time, I have learned many things. Beyond just learning skills in my field and putting them into practice, I learned: patience, courage, work ethic, communication and the importance of leadership. I have been blessed by all the staff at King Street and hope to keep in close touch with all of them. I have taken away more from this internship than I could’ve ever thought possible. It has provided me with many opportunities and connections that will aid in my future endeavors. I truly thank all of King Street Church from the bottom of my heart for welcoming me into the family and for giving me this opportunity.

Ray Tiell (Student Ministries)As a student ministry intern, I’ve had the opportunity to spend this summer getting to know King Street’s middle and high school students. As a leader on our Summer Sneak beach trip and Chambersburg Project local mission trip, I was able to spend some extended time both serving students and serving alongside them. I’m happy to say that I was able to witness incredible growth in a number of students this summer, as many experienced the grace of God in new ways and one made the step of being baptized, and I’m excited to keep in contact with them and watch them continue to grow over the rest of their years in Student Ministry and beyond. We gave away a pineapple, swam in the ocean, told some great stories, climbed on some roofs, spent time in Scripture, ate lots of pizza, attempted to do laundry and made some unforget-table memories. In addition to building relationships with teens, I was also able to work with King Street’s incredible pastoral staff. I learned a lot about ministry from them and

they provided an awesome example of what Christian leadership should look like. I’m blessed to have seen God working at King Street this summer, and I’m excited to carry these lessons and encouragements back to Cedarville as I prepare to return for my final year of college.

Bryton Zook (Productions)I am very thankful for the opportunity to have been an intern at King Street Church since February. In the past seven months I observed and explored the “hidden min-istry” of production at KSC and I have enjoyed working with everyone here at the church! During my internship, I was able to continue to sharpen my skills in sound engineering on various soundboards; ProPresenter computer software used for announcements, song lyrics, and sermon slides; and stage lighting design in the Baker Center; as well as learn in the areas of video recording for KSC News announcements, Three Minutes With Pastor Jody, and Baptism videos; video mixing for the livestream services; and stage production and set-up in preparation for Sunday morning services. I am blessed with my growth of knowledge in these areas that I have learned in a Christ-centered environment.

MISSIONS NEWS

EXCERPTS FROM RECENT COMMUNICATIONS

Emily SchoenleberAugust 2, 2018(Serving in New Zealand with Youth With A Mission)

Hi Friends and FamilyThis has been a busy and exciting past couple

of months. If you’ve been following what I’ve been up to, you’d know that I have been making my way to a few different places. So I wanted to take an opportunity to bring you up to speed on where I’ve been and what I’ve been up to.

Vanuatu Only about a week after the DTS gradua-

tion in New Zealand, I was back on the plane heading to Port Vila, Vanuatu, to help with some final finishing touches on a new center that Marine Reach opened the first week of July. I spent over a week in Port Vila reconnecting with friends, doing a lot of painting and helping with other odds and ends that needed finished, like unloading furniture out of storage containers. It was really cool to see everyone coming together and pitching in to get things done.

New Zealand The day I flew in from Vanuatu, I stayed in

Auckland to be part of a launch for Brave Love

“Jesus calls us to a way of relating to each other in the Church that leaves civility far behind.”

Pastor Jay Brown, July 22, 2018u u u u u

“In the lives of Ahab and Jezebel we see that there was a Payday Someday. There is a payday for sin. However, if you have received Christ as your Savior and been forgiven of your sin, your sin has already been paid for by Jesus Christ on the cross.”

Pastor Ron Cook, July 29, 2018u u u u u

“Sadly, many people choose not to put their faith in Jesus for many different reasons. For some it’s fear, such as fear of what others might think of them. For others it’s hypocrisy. They look at people who call themselves a Christian and things justs don’t add up. Still others are angry at God, perhaps because someone close to them has died. Whatever your why is, I can’t encourage you strongly enough. Open your heart to Jesus. Look to him. Trust him. He really loves you.”

Pastor Jody Bowser, August 5, 2018u u u u u

“Go low.”Pastor Jody Bowser, August 12, 2018

“If you are with your shame or your pain, wondering if you could ever be healed, if you could ever be truly known and accepted at the same time, I want you to know that Jesus is a safe place. He gives us the freedom to walk together in our messes.”

New Zealand. In October we had a gathering at our base so some of you may remember a bit about that. Brave Love is a movement that is spreading, which inspires women to love with action. The heart behind Brave Love is to motivate women to discover their true calling and live knowing that what they have to offer is powerful and effective.

What a privilege to be part of that gathering! In a few weeks time I will be taking part in the Brave Love conference in Auckland where some of our friends from YWAM Kona will be coming to speak.

USA! USA! USA! On the first of July, I arrived back to the

USA for the first time in about a year. It was so surreal to think it had really been that long since I had been in the country. I spent my first three weeks in Costa Mesa, California, where I stayed on campus at Vanguard University. Some of you may remember last summer when I took part in a collaborative leadership training school in Kona, Hawaii, called 21 Project with Circuit Riders. I was a part of 21 Project again this summer in California. What a privilege to be back with that community of people growing in relationship with Jesus, and going deeper in surrender and our walks with Him!

Our days were pretty full during those three weeks, usually going from morning to evening with breaks for lunch and dinner, but man, it was so good! Practically most of our days included main session and worship from about 9 a.m. to noon, then track in the afternoons from about 2 p.m.–5 p.m. and evening worship and session from 7 p.m.–9:30/10. There were close to 300 young people that came from across the country and internationally to be part of 21 Project. It is always such a significant three weeks.

Next Steps and New Seasons By Friday morning worship I felt so light

and so full of joy. I felt God say to me that He doesn’t expect me to have my life figured out.

He doesn’t expect me to know what I’m meant to do. And He doesn’t expect me to have a perfect plan or have answers for Him.

“The Pressure Is OFF”Wow! Talk about words full of freedom. Even

from those first few days, the Lord was already beginning to unfold what He was inviting me into as a next step. But I needed to get rid of that fear and striving before I would even consider it. At first it seemed pretty crazy and out of the blue, but the more I thought about it and prayed about it, the more sense it began to make. I knew I couldn’t let fear hold me back from stepping into something new.

For almost the last year I have been asking the Lord where I can put down roots and really begin to establish myself. Wow, am I thankful for His patience!

It is with immense joy and total peace in my heart that I want to officially announce that I will be moving to Huntington Beach, California, this fall to join Circuit Riders.

Bernie and Sherry PierceAugust 3, 2018(Serving in Lincoln, Nebraska with Christar.)

4600 Plus Miles and We Still Like Each Other

Out of four weeks of travel, almost all major driving days had foul weather. We saw some bad accidents but were not a part of them nor did we have any major van problems. Thanks for praying for safety. We had great meetings in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, great reunions, open houses and family visits in IN, OH, CT, PA, VA, AL, MS, KS and a great Renew Conference for Christar in Texas. A particular highlight was getting to see friends we have not seen for 4, 12 or 20 years. Heaven is going to be so wonderful.

Eighty Plus Children in VBS Every NightThe team that came from Kansas helped our

team do a great job with VBS and there were over 105 or so different children that came throughout the week. Praise God that so many families were touched!

Looking ForwardOn August 13 our boys will be starting

middle school and full-time kindergarten. Please pray that God would guard the hearts and minds of Joshua and Timothy as they enter school again and please pray for a Christian friend for each of them at school. There will be many adjustments necessary after our summer. Please pray for wisdom about how to best plan our week (Arab church activities, English classes, visits, English church involvement, Bible studies, Scouts, Kids’ Club, FoodNet, Team meetings, administration, etc.), knowing that so many extra things that happen in refugee work are not planned. May we honor the Lord in using our time wisely.

Praises:1. Friends like YOU praying and giving to

Christar and seeing so many special friends on this trip.

2. Safety during extensive travels.3. After working at a National Youth Leader-

ship Training week, Bernie has now completed his “Wood Badge” course with Boy Scouts, giving him more credibility in leadership.

4. Good memories made before the boys start back to school.

5. So far our teammates who are in Iraq for a couple months are doing well and making some great connections. Our teammates in Turkey are doing well as far as we know.

Requests:1. Schedule and mental adjustments with

school and other ministries getting started back up soon.

2. We have an unspoken request regarding our boys.

3. Ease in getting back together with refugee friends.

4. Wisdom and provision in getting our second van fixed.

5. In the midst of a whirlwind of things restarting, we desire to make sure we are taking care of our own needs spiritually, physically, mentally, etc. Pray we would be wise.

6. A potential outreach with the Arab church here with evangelists next week.

7. A troubled couple whose marriage is still strained.

8. Our friend, the abandoned mom, who has not been able to secure a job yet.

Emily and Bryan GerlachAugust 9, 2018(Serving in Thailand with TEAM Global Missions)

Northeastern Thailand (Isaan)Bryan had the chance to travel to Isaan

with the Family Connection Foundation this month. He spent three days visiting three projects in Northeastern Thailand. It was an amazing chance to encourage the projects and be encouraged by the remarkable work that they are doing in a very unreached area of the world. In one of the provinces, there are about a million people and only around 3,000 believers, that’s 0.3%. He heard stories of prison, sports and English ministry, community outreach and crisis pregnancy care. It’s a true blessing to be a part of and to be able to support the great ministries going on throughout Thailand.

Emily is due on September 4, so she is getting prepared for another birth in a foreign country. We are very happy with our doctor and the hospital and are anxious to meet our baby girl. Jameson is also super excited about being a big brother, even though he has no clue how much his little world will change.

Praises:• So far mom and baby are healthy and doing

great.• FCF has opened two new projects this year.• We are so thankful for you, all of our sup-

porters who keep us encouraged.Prayers:

• For a smooth delivery of our baby girl.• That we have the chance to share with

our neighbors.• For the men and women working diligently

in Isaan.• For our local church to be able to raise

money to purchase land for a new building.

Roger and Marilyn ReeckJuly 30, 2018(Based in Honduras with Wycliffe Bible Transla-tors)

Guinea BissauOur time in Guinea Bissau in June went

great. It is always so wonderful to be back and spend time with our “grandkids” again. We got to meet little Baby Roger born in February.

Roger worked with the two groups that he was scheduled to consult for (the Sonike and Felupe) and was even able to spend five days with a third one (Kriol) checking the book of Ruth. Our prayer is that many people will grow in the grace and the knowledge of Jesus Christ through the translated Scriptures.

The Sonike/Sarakule people group are Muslim. One of the problems the team ran into during the two weeks of checking is that it coincided with the Muslim festival Ramadan. The three Sonike translators had to fast every day during that period. The work continued on even when at times they felt weak and had a hard time concentrating. Praise God.

Marilyn spent time in a Muslim town with OneStory supervisor Ivonete and the members of the area team. The area people group is almost completely Muslim. There are very few Christians, but there is one man with a

special ministry. His name is A. He is of the local language group and a pastor. He has a radio program on a local Christian station in the native language. Ivonete helped them through the final check of the Bible stories. A has now recorded 23 stories and is playing them on a “call in” type program where people can discuss the stories on the air. (Yes, many people do have cell phones.)

A has a great love for reaching his own people for Christ. When local young people are kicked out of their homes by their Muslim families for accepting the Lord, he provides them with food and lodging. His desire is to minister to them and help them grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

HondurasMarilyn arrived back in time for the yearly

Garifuna conference to which people come from all over Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and from various of the Garifuna churches in the US.

Right after, we held an Advanced Trauma Healing Equipping seminar for the first groups who had put into practice what they had learned by leading healing groups. Praise the Lord that Marilyn Davis of Dallas is always willing to travel to Honduras and lead the training. Also, since Pastor Ludy had traveled from his Miskito area, we continued to work on producing materials for Story Based Trauma Healing in the Miskito language of Honduras. We almost have all the work completed. If you would like to check it out you can go to: http://thi.americanbible.org.

Praise:• The translation checking accomplished

in Africa.• The new facilitators who can share the

Trauma Healing materials with others.• Safe travels. Roger secured three seats

going and coming on the long trip to Africa.Pray:

• A trip to Brazil. Roger plans to work with

Page 26: Wednesday Night Classes Celebrate Recovery P. 10 MESSENGER · Tyler Roberts, Media and Production Coordinator ... meals will resume in September and the cost will remain at $4 for

26

the Yaminahua people group.• The use of stories and especially that those

who listen by radio will accept the message.• Roger might need another operation this

time on his right ankle. Pray for wisdom and the timing. If it is done in October, then he will not be able to return to Africa this year.

• Between now and the end of the year Marilyn will be mostly here in Honduras being involved in several Trauma Healing activities.

Rigo and Chrysti AndinoAugust 13, 2018(Serving in Honduras with Commission to Every Nation)

Church NewsRigo and another young man from our

church were recently appointed as elders of the little church we are serving at. We are all working together to try to serve the needs of the church. Cali has started a visitation program and Rigo teaches the adults every Sunday. Amanda and Anthony are beginning to help in Sunday school and nursery, I help with Sunday school. It is fun to be able to serve as a family. We are always looking for new ways to meet the needs of the church. We have added a nursery class and are trying to do more with the youth.

Tiny BabiesOver the last two months we have had

six premature babies born at the hospital. It is very challenging since we do not have the equipment or trained staff to run a NICU. The doctors take turns standing by and the nurses stand guard as they watch these little fragile bodies fight to stay alive. Only two of these little babies have survived. The others did not have the strength to keep going. This has taken an emotional toll on the staff as they do their best, but sometimes God has another plan. Please pray for the families and staff as they deal with

this heartache. Please pray we will be able to get the equipment and staff to be better prepared for these little ones.

Gathering at the WellEach day chatter can be heard at our gate.

Neighbors gather at our water spigot to fill buckets with water. They stand in line and talk about the weather and news around us while they take turns getting water to drink, cook and clean. We are the only people in the community with a reliable source of water, so they come. Some come from close by and other days they come from far away and fill-up every jug or bucket they can find. Then they load up the back of their trucks and deliver the life giving water. It is a good reminder of the need so many have for the living water. We pray many will feel the thirst and want to come to the true source of life and then fill up so much they feel the need to share.

We have tried to drill a well for the com-munity but it failed. We have a group coming from St. Louis in September who are going to drill and donate the entire water project so they can have water in their homes. Please pray they will also have the living water in their hearts.

GrowthThe ministry of Cornerstone is always

growing. It is evident by the constant construc-tion projects everywhere. Over the next few months there will be another operating room, a new labor and delivery room, a room for more critical patients as well as a new section of housing for long term patients. Each day more patients arrive than can be cared for in one day and the surgery list goes on and on.

The children’s center is caring for over 30 children and many new needs are being pre-sented. The bilingual school will be adding sixth grade and there is a waiting list to get in to kindergarten.

All of this growth is exciting but also poses many challenges. More personnel is needed in every area and the current staff is sometimes

Page 27: Wednesday Night Classes Celebrate Recovery P. 10 MESSENGER · Tyler Roberts, Media and Production Coordinator ... meals will resume in September and the cost will remain at $4 for

27

stretched too thin. Please pray God will provide strength to the missionaries that are here and that He will bring in the people we need. If you are interested in being a part, please check out the website crstone.org and see how you can donate or volunteer.

Too Many RocksRigo’s well drilling equipment sailed the

ocean to Roatan Island in hopes of providing water to a very needy area. The men spent over a month on the island attempting to drill wells in several different areas but each time they hit rock. The equipment was not quite powerful enough to get through the rock. It was discouraging for all involved to not be able to find a water source. Rigo is praying about what can be done to modify his equipment or whether to look at purchasing something new to be able to help in situations like this. It has been a lot of expense with no results. Sometimes it is hard to be between a rock and hard place.

Britton HastingsAugust 10, 2018(Serving in Carroll County, MD with Fellowship of Christian Athletes)

Camp Season Finishing STRONGWhat a phenomenal summer of camps! I am

blessed to say that I have seen God show up in incredible ways for yet another summer. This summer I have seen hundreds of students say “Yes” to Jesus and forever change their eternal home. I could talk for hours about each camp, and if you would like to hear stories, please contact me.

At our regional camps I was on the program team. It was a summer of learning new skills and doing behind the scenes work that helps make our FCA camps so special. I really enjoyed a new side of camp and saw God work in my heart and the Holy Spirit move through countless coaches and athletes.

The Year of the Intern Carroll County FCA was blessed and chal-

lenged by six interns this summer, the most in the region. All six brought new ideas, per-spectives, insight and skills to the table. We had great fellowship with our Field Trip Friday tradition and in the office work we did daily. All of our interns grew personally and spiritually. We joined forces with Crossroads Community Church interns and read Mere Christianity to do some intentional discipleship that brought our team even closer together.

The Carroll County staff felt that this summer internship was a great picture of what staff is really like. Between the daily planning, and office work to the numerous camps, it was a summer packed full of God showing up in so many ways.

God Is So Good This year has flown by. I can not believe that

I have just crossed over my one year on FCA staff in Carroll County. It has been a year of seeing God’s provision, waiting for His timing and the beginning of some great relationships.

Just one way we have seen God working is with an office space. Carroll County FCA has been nomadic for the last six years, but we are moving towards an office space that could be exactly what we have been waiting for. Please continue to pray for a central space for our Carroll County FCA family.

Looking back over this year, I am so thank-ful for so much. God has taught me so much through great friendships, challenged me with scripture and teaching and encouraged me with what He continues to do in my life and in the lives of those around me.

Since the Messenger is online and available everywhere, precautions are necessary when sharing about missionaries serving in Muslim countries or other restricted areas. In order not to jeopardize our missionaries working in very challenging places, names and locations are excluded from some updates.
