Wednesday June 15, 2016 From Sue Term 3 Curriculum Day: Monday 11 July Please note: the first day of Term 3 is Monday 11 July and a Curriculum Day has been scheduled on this day, so there will be no school for children. The staff will be working on student wellbeing and welfare and engagement on this day. Children will resume school on Tuesday 12 July. Seussical Jr We have been overwhelmed with disappointed students who missed our first Seussical tee shirt order therefore we are doing an additional run. We have sample tee short sizes at the office to try on. The prices include $20 for youths and $25 for adult sizes; students are allowed to wear the tee shirt as school uniform for Term 3. The trybooking link is shown below: https://www.trybooking.com/LNHK After the huge success of our Matilda excursion the year 4 5 6 students are being offered an optional excursion to “We Will Rock You”; the Queen musical. See the music blog for more information. Art Masters Joseph Weber and Amy Perara from 4B, Melaleucas presented their artwork. On one side is a poor Cambodian village with a Cambodian city behind. On the other side is a Cambodia full of joy, plenty of food, happy animals, good housing and people learning both in school and about their lost culture from elders. The Victory Gate separates the two worlds and the people are passing through the gateway from the depressed side to the joyful side. Isabelle Nicolls, Ruby Morgan and Eliza Mc Gann from 3B, Ironbarks showed their artwork of a village in Cambodia. Everyone is sharing food, animals or cultural skills (dancing) or helping others by building a house. Primary Schools’ Network, Debating Challenge 2016 - Brighton Secondary College Our year 6 students participated in the Primary Schools’ Network Debating Competition at Brighton Secondary College last Wednesday 8 th , June. This was an opportunity for the schools in the local area to practise their debating skills while sharing a day with the other year 6 classes in the district.

The topics were selected by Brighton Secondary College and the format of the debates was a round robin elimination. There were five rounds of debates for the day with a total of 32 teams competing. All students participated in round one and the successful teams progressed to round two and so forth until there were two teams left for the final debate. Two Hampton teams made it to the final debate. The adjudicators were from the Victorian Debating Association. The teams included:

In addition, Jack Tuffley and Paddy Troy provided a support role. I extend congratulations to our debating teams, the feedback I have received indicates that the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and challenge of ‘thinking on your feet’, the need to effectively collaborate with your team when you are under a limited time pressure, the opportunity to mix with and learn from other students engaged in the competition and finally being able to hear from the adjudicators directly regarding how the team performed and further areas for improvement. My thanks go to Jane Alderman for her efforts with coordinating our students’ involvement in this activity.

Mandarin Performance Last week at assembly Grade 1D, Sugar Gums performed ‘I have a family’ in Mandarin. The children sang in Mandarin and held posters showing the words in English for the audience. The grade had been practising the song over 3 lessons and performed with great enthusiasm, confidence and growing skill. The children are obviously enjoying their instruction in Mandarin.

Academic Excellence Congratulations go to the following students who received an academic excellence award at assembly yesterday: Finlay Maxwell from FA, Snappy Gums for displaying a determined approach to do his best and

producing outstanding achievement in all curriculum areas Oliver Horigan from 5/6C, Eucalypts For displaying a highly motivated approach to all aspects of

his schooling, Oliver has an inquiring mind, thinks logically and rationally producing work of a commendable standard in all areas and demonstrates impressive interpersonal skills

Public Speaking Congratulations go to the following students who addressed a very large audience of over 800 yesterday at assembly with the aim of delivering a convincing speech on a specific topic: Noah Ripple from 5/6C, Eucalypts who presented a well-researched speech on homework,

asserting that homework did not improve outcomes and time currently spent on homework could and should be devoted to physical health and wellbeing. Noah aroused much interest from the packed audience, with students in particular agreeing with his arguments!

Jack Tuffley from 5/6A, Wattles addressed the topic of the possibility of being able to change the world. He particular passion was on the orang-utan and specifically the current obsession with obtaining palm oil unnecessarily. His arguments were cogent, logical and convincing and he spoke with great conviction.

Paddy Troy from 5/6A, Wattles took a humorous approach on the topic of The Simpsons

television show arguing that this was a worthwhile television experience for families and in fact it can be quite rewarding, educational and amusing. Paddy’s presentation and proposition really stimulated the audience and resulted in much laughter.

Next week we will hear from the Mia Henwood’s speech on the topic – There is something strange about …. Mia is in 5/6a, Wattles. All the speakers have devoted considerable time and effort to developing, polishing and more recently refining their speeches. They have all received feedback from home and school and have relished the opportunity to adjust and or make their speeches even stronger. Tomorrow night Jack and Paddy will represent the school and compete in an interschool competition being organised by Rotary. I extend best wishes to Jack and Paddy. Pleasing Progress Well done to Jai Marer from 2E, Flowering Gums who was recognised at assembly yesterday having made commendable progress with his reading and writing after working with Mrs Van Pelt for the last few months. Assembly Performance Thank you to 2A, Mountain Ash for leading the singing of the National Anthem yesterday. Congratulations go to James Savery from 4A, Tea Trees and Christian Beare from 4C, Banksias who played “Arpeggio Bounce” on violin accompanied by Marija Tabain (Christian’s mum) on keyboard. This was a tight musical performance and they demonstrated excellent pitch.
