    State of Florida v. Clemente Aguirre-Jarquin:The Long, Winding Path to Freedom

    Speakers: Lindsey Boney and Dylan BlackClemente Aguirre spent 14 years in prison—10 ofthem on death row—after being wrongfully incarcer-ated and convicted for the 2004 double-stabbingmurders of two women who lived next door to him.His initial trial counsel never investigated his claim

    of innocence, never hired forensic experts andnever tested for DNA the 150+ items that policecollected from the crime scene, but once that evi-dence was collected (after his conviction), anotherperson’s DNA was at the crime scene (and none ofAguirre’s DNA was present) and that other personconfessed to the crimes. After a Florida trial courtdenied Aguirre’s motion for a new trial, the Newyork-based Innocence Project asked Bradley tohandle his appeal. The Florida Supreme Courtunanimously reversed, vacated his convictions anddeath sentence, and ordered a new trial. AtAguirre’s request, Bradley stayed on to representhim in his new trial before the state ultimatelydropped the charges in November 2018, afterthree weeks of jury selection and in-court deposi-tions related to the new evidence.
