Mary Rita Skrine on inspiring Motherhood! My parents have inspired me as a Mom. They raised six children to be independent, have a sense of humor, and to be a loyal friend. Spending time with family and friends is a priority in our life. I’m at a point in my life where my children’s growing independence is both bittersweet and rewarding. You put in so much hard work when they’re little, and now we’re watching them fly. I love that they have unique traits and abilities I could never have predicated. Their world is totally different from the one I grew up in, but they approach it with the values my husband and I instilled in them, and it’s inspiring to see them thrive with that kind of ground-ing and love that begins at home. I think probably the most inspiring and surprising part of parenting is just how reciprocal the learning is. I learn from my kids every day. They are my greatest joy and my greatest teachers.

Mary Rita Skrine, is a lifelong Oak Parker co-owner of Skrine Chops in Forest Park.

I ’ve always been a more casual mom. For a full five years of my life I wore shorts, crazy t-shirts, a baseball hat and crocs every day to

work. After the bakery I rejoined the more dressy professional sector. But,it’s taken me most of these last five to settle back into professional attire. I now own quite a few pairs of slacks. I have a few awesome, and key professional jackets. I’ve added enough items that I can make it through the week pretending that I have a professionally leaning wardrobe.

BUT on the weekends, like many of us, I want to just be casual. I’d rather wear my favorite pairs of jeans than anything else. I want to slow things down for me and my family. Frankly, I think denim is key to a proper weekend transformation - at least in my book. As it turns out, in Suze Solari’s book too. Suze just published The T-Shirt & Jeans Handbook: Stylish Upgrades for Your Daily Uniform with Michelle Bua in e-format. Suze’s book might be about t-shirts and jeans, but it feels a little like the handbook of weekend motherhood.

We want to be casual. All of us, but if 5 out of our 7 days are spent wearing slacks, skirts and dresses our jeans are being neglected. Weekends in our communities are spent by the side of the soccer field and baseball diamond. Our children are playing lacrosse, they are in middle school

spectacular musicals, they are in band and chess club. At this time of year, recitals creep out of the woodwork and remind us how much our children are actually doing. Frankly, when those events pop up, in the evening, on the weekends, I don’t want to wear the grey slacks I’ve been wearing all week. I dan wear my baseball cap on the side of the soccer field, but as casual as I feel I just can’t make myself go to a recital like that.

Suze and I both wanted to devote this Mother’s Day section to denim. Me, because I think denim represents exactly what we all need: a significant

slow down. Mom’s deserve a slightly casual day, where we can wear our jeans all day. If we have to dress that up with a splash of color, so be it. At least with Suze’s book uploaded for quick consultation, we’ll all know how to do it well.

My key to a slower weekend is denim
