Wishing You Happy Good Lent

Lent is the 40-day period (not including Sundays) leading to Easter. Forty is a very biblical number. It brings us back to years of wandering, a flooded earth, and, most especially, Jesus in his wilderness temptation by Satan. Our forty days

of Lenten preparation for Easter are times of fasting, not feasting, of giving more and not less, of thinking less of ourselves and more of Jesus.

I invite you to a period of Digging Deeper in our faith relationship with God during this season. Start with us in the Sanctuary at Noon or

6pm on Ash Wednesday (February 14) with a cross of ash on your forehead or hand, reminding of both the call to turn from our own ways to God’s and that our lives are indeed fragile.

Then, join with God in:

Celebrating our collective ministry of nurture as we pray over new Congregational Care Ministers on February 18th in all 3 worship services or by joining a Life Together group for transformation in Christ.

Deepening your worship through Daily Lenten devotions, attending worship in community each week and joining us for Holy Week noontime and Holy Thursday worship.

Serving others and the cause of Christ by 1)filling a Society of St Andrew bank to feed the hungry; 2)stepping up in the discipline of giving by working toward the biblical tithe; or 3)volunteering for opportunities to help others feel welcome at First, to be fed through Good Works Foundation, or by paying attention to the needs around us and responding in tangible ways.

Maybe we don’t greet each other during this season with “Happy Lent” or “Merry Lent”. We do, after all, focus more on the journey toward the cross, toward Jesus’ suffering and death. But, along the way, remember that just as the wilderness temptation led to Jesus’ ministry and the cross led to the empty tomb, so our time of sacrifice and prayer, of fasting and discipline, leads us toward a celebration of the transformed lives we experience through Jesus Christ.

So, Happy Lent after all,

- Pastor Byron

Dementia Care Giver Group

If you love someone with Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of Dementia, you are invited to participate in a small group study which will begin on Wednesday, February 21st, and conclude on Wednesday, May 9th. The group will meet at 4:30pm in the conference room. We will be reading and discussing a book, Keeping Love Alive as Memories Fade -

The 5 Love Languages and the Alzheimer’s Journey by Gary Chapman. In addition to the book, other resources will be

shared including wisdom of group members who are on this journey. Mary Bess Price, a social worker with extensive experience in this area and Ava Rozelle will facilitate the

group. If you have questions about the group, contact Pastor Ava at the church office. Please let the office know if you are interested in being part of this group so that we can assure

adequate materials.

At some point in our life, we all experience grief, which is our normal response to loss. Though it is a common

experience, we do not grieve alike, our journey is unique - but experience has taught us that healing is enhanced when we understand the process and when we have someone with whom to share the journey. For this

reason, we are offering a Grief Support group on the second Monday of each month beginning at 5:30pm.

The dates are: February 12, March 12, April 9, and

May 14. Please contact Pastor Ava with any questions or for additional information.

SANCTUARY FLOWERS Reserve your special date for 2018 now.
