notBrandy’sfirstforayintotheworldofacademia.

LikemanytypicalAmericankids,shewaspushedinto

collegedirectlyoutofhighschool.In1991she

enrolledinCollinCountyCommunityCollege,butthe

typicalAmericanpathwasnotquitethejourneytheuniversehadinmindforher.

Afterfightingaproliferativecellulardisorderthroughoutheradolescence,Brandy

wasreadytoliveherliferatherthanspendfour-plusyearsincollegeworkingtoward

anunknowndestination.AfteroneaimlesssemesteratCollin,sheoptedinsteadfor

aquickten-monthcosmetologyprogramandspenthertwentiesdressingfabulous

hairandlivinganoverindulgent,glamorouslifestyleinUniversityPark.By2001she

hadbecomerestlessinhersuperficialroutine,soshesoldallofherpossessionsand

spentmostofthenextdecadetravelingtheglobe.Asshemetnewpeopleand

discovereddifferentculturesBrandybecamefascinatedwithfoodanditssignificant

relationshipwithcommunity.In2010sheenrolledinLeCordonBleuwhereshe

beganherresearchinfoodhistory.EarninganAASinCulinaryArtsledhertoa

positionastheresearchassistantonahighlyacclaimed,narrativecookbook,which

wontheprestigiousJamesBeardAwardtheyearfollowingitspublication.After

completingthecookbookprojectin2012herdesiretocontinueresearchingand

writingprovokedhertotestthewatersoftraditionalcollegeonceagain.

TwentyyearsafterherfirstattemptsheenrolledintherebrandedCollinCollege.By

thistimebothBrandyandthecollegehadgrownandchanged,andshethenfound

Collintobeherperfectmatch.Brandy’stwoyearsatCollinCollegetaughtherthat

formaleducationisarewardthatisn’tlimitedtoonlyonedemographic,andshe

singstheschool’spraisestoanyonewhowilllisten!
