REDTalks 2016 EmceeEric “Pogi” Sumangil ’01 Actor, Playwright, Teaching Artist, Part-time Hand Model

Bio | Eric holds degrees in communication and Asian studies from Saint John’s, and for the last 16 years, has worked as a professional actor, playwright, director, choreog-rapher, teaching artist and part-time hand model. He has performed locally with Mixed Blood Theatre, the Guthrie Theater, Mu Performing Arts, the Ordway Center, Frank Theatre, Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, and Children’s Theatre Company. Nationally, he has worked at La Jolla Playhouse, Mo’olelo Performing Arts, and Broadway Palm West Dinner Theater. Pogi has also worked in film and TV, including several commercials and the award-winning web series Theater People. He is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association, a union of actors and stage managers. Pogi is a recipient of the 2002 Fil-Minnesotan Association Excellence in the Arts award, a two-time Many Voices fellow, and once got his name on a plaque for eating a 3 lb. steak in under an hour.

Talk | Heads tilt back, gazing into the sky. Lights shine and sequins glitter. Who is that girl? The girl on the flying trapeze? Hear how Taylor, a previous non-athlete, found herself leaving the ground behind and taking to the skies. Bio | Taylor Van Denburgh ’09 has worked as a freelance performer in the Twin Cities since completing her BAs in vocal performance and sociology at Saint Ben’s. Taylor enjoys musical theatre and stays active in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area with her theater and opera roles. In 2012, Taylor found herself training in aerial circus arts, and she now calls Twin Cities Trapeze Center her second home.

Talk | Tom’s experience as an “entrepreneurial eater” started with some basic dietary experiments and an exploration of DIY fermentation. Hear Tom talk about the restorative and healing advantages of a regenerative food system.Bio | Tom Brossart ’14 structures his life around fermentation, minimalism, entrepreneurial evolution, dynamic relationships and mindfulness. He currently works as the digital architect at FOOD BUILDING - an urban food production hub in Minneapolis —where experts use ingredients from local, family farms to craft good food. Outside of work, he’s on a quest to hike all of the Minnesota State Parks and to average one book/week for the rest of his life, because adventure.

FACILITATING LIFE’S TRANSITIONS IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Talk | Collegebound, the outdoor orientation program at CSB/SJU, provides a way for incoming students to transition into college. Tylewr will explore the history, outcomes and growth of similar outdoor orientation programs for people in experiencing transition.Bio | Tyler is a senior environmental studies major and economics minor at SJU. He currently managers the SJU Outdoor Leadership Center and coordinates the CSB/SJU Collegebound program, Saint John’s Outdoor University and the Peer Resource Program. He’s a captain for the CSB/SJU Nordic Ski Team and as the sustainability intern for the CSB Office of Sustain-ability, served as the financial officer and student director of the Full Circle Greenhouse. Tyler studied abroad in Scandinavia and served as a delegate for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Paris, France. After graduation, Tyler plans to work in outdoor/adventure education or wilderness therapy for teens and young adults.

NURTURING THE INTERFACE OF REASON AND INTUITION

Talk | Few humans naturally think abstractly; however, much of the power of modern mathematics derives from its abstract and general approach. Tom will share how he uses Geometry to help students grow their intuition and reasoning and make the abstract meaningful. Bio | Tom Sibley has taught at CSB/SJU for over thirty years and still loves teaching. He particularly enjoys mentoring students doing mathematics research. He’s authored two mathematics textbooks and has started work on a third. Before his time at CSB/SJU, he taught in a variety of places, notably in Africa. Right out of college, he was a Peace Corps volunteer who taught high school mathematics (in French) in the Congo. After obtaining his Ph.D., he taught at a college in Liberia from 1980 to 1983.

Bio | Amy Campbell Bissonette ’80 owns a business and a gym and has been a personal trainer for 20 years. Her motto is “one healthy choice leads to another.” She apprenticed in California to become an image consultant after a life-changing experience with the work and recently partnered with another stylist to form Sacred Styling, a business that strives to help people “live from the inside, out.”

TO RWANDA AND BACK: CONNECTING AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITIES THROUGH FILM

Talk | Agriculture has the ability to nourish, empower and unite people, even in war-torn countries. Megan, Anna and a team of CSB/SJU students recently traveled to Rwanda to study and document how the women of Rwanda are using agriculture to rebuild their country, create hope and move forward after the Rwandan Genocide in 1994.Bio | Megan Towle ’16 and Anna Cron ’16 are co-directors of Extending the Link (ETL), a CSB/SJU student organization that produces documentaries to ignite social change in the community. They recently returned from Rwanda after meeting with women farmers and other agriculture industry influencers. While in Rwanda, they witnessed first-hand how farming empowers women and the value of connecting communities across the globe. The Rwandan film is the third documentary they have worked on for ETL.

Talk | In generations past, career and vocational opportunities for women weren’t as plentiful as they are now. Monastic life provided women with the opportunity to go to college and experience a kind of independence that would have otherwise not been available to them. The current generation of women have many more career and vocational opportunities than that of generations past. Bridgette will shed light on why she and other millennials still see monasticism as a relevant and desirable path.Bio | Bridgette Powers ’09 is a postulant at Saint Benedict’s Monastery in and earned a degree in theology and minors in secondary education and Spanish from Saint Ben’s. After graduation, she volunteered in Chicago with the Dominican Volunteer Corps and eventually went back to school to earn a Master’s of Divinity from Saint John’s School in 2015. She feels blessed to be a postulant at Saint Ben’s, discerning a call to religious life and is proud to be one of the few who can say she is both a Bennie and a Johnnie.

Talk | College graduates without jobs. The cost of college rising. High student loan debt. A quick read of the headlines suggests that students and families should have second thoughts about going to college. But the headlines are wrong. Jon will share with us why the value of college–developmental and professional—has never been greater.Bio | Jon McGee ’84 is the vice president for planning and public affairs at the CSB/SJU, where he serves on the cabinet of both colleges. Working in higher education research and policy for 24 years, Jon is frequently invited to speak nationally on demo-graphic trends, the economics of higher education and the intersection of mission, market and institutional values. His new book, Breakpoint: The Changing Marketplace for Higher Education (Johns Hopkins University Press), examines key forces of disruption in higher education and offers a framework to colleges and universities for addressing those issues. Jon serves as a trustee of the College Board and as the national chair of the College Board’s College Scholarship Service Assembly Council. He also serves on the faculty of the Harvard Summer Institute on College Admissions.

Talk | Glen has spent her career in sports in a support role, from coaching 5th grade basketball to the Olympic Games. She has been on the world’s stage, but always behind-the-scenes and loving every minute of it. A true-to-form ‘role player,’ hear how Glen has found ways to celebrate the work and find joy in meeting her goals while getting others to theirs.Bio | Glen Werner ’93 is the athletic director for the College of Saint Benedict. Prior to her return to CSB, Glen served two years as assistant general manager at VillaSport Athletic Club & Spa, a luxury spa in Colorado Springs. For 15 years prior, Glen worked her way through the ranks at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center. She started as a residential life coordinator and served as a scheduling coordinator, operations manager and associate director before becoming the director for six years (2007-13). As the director, Glen oversaw all aspects of operations at the elite international sports training facility. She attended six Olympic and Paralympic games to help execute training and competition plans. As a CSB student, Glen was part of four consecutive trips to the NCAA Division III National Tournament with the Blazer basketball team. That team is in the CSB Hall of Fame.
