Seeing is Believing Of all the senses we possess, sight is the one on which we rely the most. But how do we go about making sense of what we see? We know that grass is green and the sky is blue but what colour is the rest of the Universe?

Seeing is Believing begins by asking how we make sense of what we see and then goes on to demonstrate the different ways in which it is possible to obtain colour from white light. We will also look at light in terms of the electromagnetic spectrum and examine what we could ‘see’ if our eyes worked at either X-ray or infra-red wavelengths. Join Dr Zbig Sobiesierski to see what is so cool about lasers, how to make a laser waterfall and listen to music travelling at the speed of light!

Medical Imaging and the Human Body Until the beginning of the 20th century, the only detailed source of information about the inside of the human body came from dissection. Since then, the application of x-rays, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging have allowed us to image the body with increasing detail and so develop a more detailed understanding of a variety of body functions and conditions. But what are x-rays, ultrasound and magnetic resonance? How do they work? And what can each tell us about the human body?

Home Computing in 1985 and how it compares with 2007 Imagine you’ve gone back in time to 1985. Not too difficult surely? Madonna and U2 in the charts … Noel Edmonds on the TV … not much change really. But wait – what’s happened to the home computer? Where’s the mouse/scanner/webcam? What’s happened to the Internet/e-mail? Where are my CDs/DVDs/digital camera/USB sticks? What’s this cassette recorder doing next to the computer?

Join Matthew Eagles as he looks at the changes that have taken place in computer technology in such a relatively short timescale. See how little the computers of the mid-1980s were capable of by today’s standards ... and how they are yet refusing to wither and die.
