Principal’s New 1N and KM Assembly Items During our past two K-2 assemblies, 1N and KM have presented their class assembly items. 1N performed an exciting and most entertaining news skit. The children’s speaking and acting skills were outstanding. I was very impressed with the children’s acting skills and ability to remember their lines at such a young age. It was a brilliant performance, congratulations 1N. I’d like to thank Miss Newel for preparing her students so beautifully for their item. Last Friday KM performed their assembly item at the K-2 Assembly. The children recited 'Green Eggs and Ham' by Dr Seuss, one of my all time favourites and performed a beautiful dance! Although I missed the performance, several teachers have commented on how entertaining the children's retelling was and how impressive the children were in remembering their lines. The children also had a great time performing their dance. Congratulations KM on a magnificent assembly item. Thank you to Miss McMunnigall for all her hard work in preparing her students for their assembly item. Zone Athletics Carnival Last Wednesday 36 students from Years 2-6 competed at our PSSA Zone Athletics Carnival at the Narrabeen Sport and Recreation Centre. Our students participated with great enthusiasm and competed well across all events on the day. All students represented our school with pride and showed excellent sportsmanship. I'd like to congratulate all students who attended this carnival of their achievements. I'd like to thank Miss Jones and Mrs Murphy for attending the carnival and Mrs McIntosh for volunteering to be the PPS parent representative. Thank you also to Mrs Holbrook, Mrs Lee-Joe, Miss Hann and Mrs Hiley for coordinating the students for this event.

Year 6 Canberra / Snow Trip Last week our Year 6 students attended their Canberra / Snow trip. The students visited Questacon, the National Science Museum in Canberra and participated in a 3 day ski program in Thredbo. The children all skied, including those who had not skied before. Despite some children unfortunately falling ill during the camp, the students all had a great experience. The children showed great resilience and cooperation during the trip and enjoyed the activities. The students assisted one another with their ski gear on and off the snow as well as comforted other students who were feeling unwell. I was extremely proud of all our Year 6 students and especially impressed with those students who continued to have a positive attitude despite being sick. It was a pleasure to take our Year 6 students on this overnight excursion. I’d like to thank and acknowledge the tremendous care, dedication and sensitivity our Year 6 teachers demonstrated towards and showed all children during the camp. In particular, the exceptional care shown to the children who become very unwell during the camp. Father’s Day Breakfast, Friday 30 September at 7am This Friday morning our P&C and PPS are hosting our annual Father’s Day Breakfast. Details about this event can be found on the P&C website at: I look forward to seeing as many dad’s as possible this Friday morning at the breakfast. Dads, don’t forget your crazy tie! Jump Rope for Heart (JRFH) ‘Jump Off’ – Friday 30 August This Friday PPS is hosting our JRFH ‘Jump Off’. All children are participating in the jump off and it is also a ‘mufti’ day (casual clothes). Children are encouraged to sign up online for the JRFH Jump Off in order to contribute to our school fundraising for The Heart Foundation. Woolworth’s Earn and Learn Tokens Last term, Pymble PS donated the earn and learn stickers our school community collected to one of our City Country Alliance partner schools, Gol Gol PS. Gol Gol PS was very appreciative of our donation of stickers. Combined with the earn and learn stickers they collected, our donation enabled the school to purchase more Dash Bots which the students use in class as part of their coding program. The principal, Glen Walker asked me to pass on his thanks to the PPS school community. Gastroenteritis Information Last Friday a note and fact sheet regarding gastroenteritis virus was sent home to parents. As the note details, there have been cases of gastroenteritis within our student population. If your child shows symptoms as per the fact sheet, please seek medical assistance and keep your child home from school for 48 hours from the last symptoms. The gastroenteritis fact sheet is attached for your information. Bruno Diodati Principal

Deputy Principals’ News

Book Week celebrations have been underway at PPS, providing many opportunities for students to enjoy books and engage in quality literature from a range of authors. Kindergarten students had a fun day of learning last Tuesday, listening to books, completing engaging activities and finished the day showing off their fabulous costumes with a Book Parade in the school hall. This week students from K-6 will have the opportunity to participate in a workshop led by author and illustrator Christina Booth. Christina is an award-winning author of seven, and illustrator of over twenty books. She has been awarded a CBCA Honour Book Award for her book, Kip, and has won numerous notable Book Awards and the Environment Award for Children’s Literature for her story, Welcome Home.

Staff at PPS advocate the importance of reading and sharing a love of books both at home and at school. Students are encouraged to read, or be read to each night as part of their daily routine. Students can access home readers from their class teacher or borrow books to read from our extensive and well-resourced school library.

Each year, students are involved in the mandatory subject Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE). The Department of Education recognises that: “This subject prepares and supports students to lead, and contribute to, healthy, safe and meaningful lives which promote respect, responsibility, enjoyment, inclusion and social justice for self and others.

Page 3: Wednesday, 28 August 2019 Term 3, Week 6 DATES TO REMEMBER€¦ · listening to books, completin g engaging activities and finished the day showing off their fabulous costumes with

The school’s PDHPE program covers a wide range of education matter, including relationships, drug use, human sexuality, child protection, fundamental movement skill development, safety and physical activity. Some of the content of the program deals with sensitive issues. The school recognises this by teaching about these issues within the context of a developmentally appropriate program.” For more information on PDHPE go to https://syllabus.nesa.nsw.edu.au/pdhpe/.

Library News Last week we completed our reading of the books by Christina Booth who is in the school this week. On Monday, half the school went to sessions where Christina shared her drawing and writing experiences and the stories behind the stories she has produced. The younger children had fun with sheep, while the older children were learning to draw a thylacine (the now extinct Tasmanian tiger). The rest of the school will enjoy their time with Christina on Thursday.

Even though last week was Book Week, the week that the Children’s Book Council of Australia sets aside as a week to celebrate the best of Australian children’s literature, we are now starting our overview of this year’s shortlisted and notable books. While we won’t be able to read all of them the children will read a variety from the varying categories, and they have access to them in the library. Kathryn Harris Teacher Librarian

Student Skiing report Northern States Snow Championships Hugh B represented Pymble Public School last week at the inter schools Northern States Championship at Perisher Ski Resort. “States” competitors are the top athletes from NSW, ACT and Qld and are competing against each other for the top spots to represent themselves and their schools in the National Championships held at Mt Buller in 2 weeks time. In the moguls competition which incorporates bumps and jumps there was 48 competitors vying for the top 15 spots. On Hugh’s 2nd run he had an impressive turning style topped by an impressive “send it” jump where he completed a 180 twist landing backwards to gain 11th place! “Send it” is an Aussie Ski Term sponsored by Australia post where the competitors try to "send it" to get the biggest air! The next day, Hugh completed in the Alpine States Championship GS slalom course. The course is a set of gates that competitors must turn between while going as fast as they can down to the finish line. The competition was stiff with 68 competitors vying for the top 15 spots. Hugh pushed his hardest and placed 13th in his first run and 10th in his 2nd run to place 14th overall. As a result Hugh B will be representing Pymble Public at Nationals to compete against the best in the country! This is an outstanding achievement and we wish Hugh all the best at Nationals.
