ACCIDENTAL VICTORIOUS IN QUEEN ANNEAccidental Agent sprang a huge surprise in the Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes yesterday, landing the opening race at Royal Ascot to become the biggest-priced winner of the race ever at 33/1. Just eight months ago, he defeated Lord Glitters (Whipper) in the Challenge Cup Heritage Handicap at Ascot. Yesterday, the pair reopposed and finished first and second to puncture some big reputations.

Accidental Agent was a first Royal Ascot success for both trainer Eve Johnson Houghton and jockey Charlie Bishop, and was bred by the trainer’s mother Gaie, who also owns him.

An overwhelmed Johnson Houghton said: “Unbelievable! I still can’t believe it. I haven’t slept for two nights. I dreamt that he would be third. My mum bred Accidental Agent - we have got the mare in the field - but nobody wanted to buy him and we bought him back for eight grand. I thought I was tilting at windmills. “The poor people sitting in front of me and my Mum - I apologise to them - they will definitely be deaf because there was an awful lot of screaming going on. It is just ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous.

“You might need to man the lifeboats, as there are a lot of tears! Group One winner... I’ve never trained a Royal Ascot winner, let alone a Group One winner at Royal Ascot.”

Her mother Gaie summed up the emotions of the day in the winner’s enclosure with a simple statement: “It’s what dreams are made of.”

From the first crop of the late Delegator, who stood at Overbury Stud prior to his death in December 2016, Accidental Agent was offered during Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, but failed to find a buyer, being bought back at 8,000gns.

The early running was made by Deauville (Galileo), with the Gr.1 Lockinge Stakes winner Rhododendron (Galileo) settled in second and Benbatl (Dubawi) hot on their heels. BLUE ON POINT IN KING’S STANDWhat a difference a year makes. Twelve months ago, Blue Point finished a good third to Caravaggio and fellow Godolphin runner Harry Angel in the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup; yesterday, dropped back to 5f, the son of Shamardal blasted to victory in the Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes to land a well-deserved first victory at the highest level. The win continued the fine run of form for Godolphin, trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick.

Gr.1 winner Battaash (Dark Angel) took the lead immediately out of the stalls, with the favourite Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy) hard on his heels, while William Buick settled Blue Point just behind. As Battaash blazed clear at the final furlong, Blue Point had his every move covered and swept past his rival to win going away by a length and a quarter, with Battaash claiming second a neck ahead of the fast-finishing Mabs Cross (Dutch Art).

Bred by Oak Lodge Bloodstock, Blue Point is a dual graduate of Tattersalls, having been purchased by Ebor Bloodstock for 110,000gns at the December Foal Sale and by John Ferguson for 200,000gns at Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale.

The four-year-old, whose victories include the Gr.2 Gimcrack Stakes at two and a pair of Gr.3s at Ascot last season, was overcoming a dismal run in Hong Kong on his most recent start when last in the Gr.1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize. He had been withdrawn at the start on Dubai World Cup night after blood was detected in his nostrils. Gr.1-placed at two in both the Middle Park and Dewhurst Stakes, the colt has now fulfilled the promise he had shown in two seasons of racing.

Appleby commented: “To have a Derby winner and then have a winner at Royal Ascot is great, and I don’t think I could have had Blue Point in any better nick. Sheikh Mohammed is a great man and coming into today, there was no pressure on us following Epsom, as he just wanted to enjoy the week.

“I think the stiff five furlongs and strong pace has suited him here. I have always thought a lot of this horse and he ran really well in the Commonwealth Cup last year. For whatever reason, he brings his A game here. Whilst things didn’t materialise on Dubai World Cup night, we went on to learn a lot in Hong Kong and it taught us a few matters. The horse had a torrid time on his way back from Hong Kong, but we gave him a nice break after that and I’m delighted with him.”

William Buick commented: “We stuck our neck out about Blue Point as a two-year-old and things didn’t go his way in a lot of races, so he deserves this. He’s a very quick horse and I was always very comfortable where I was, and I knew he would see the race out better than Battaash.”

past the leaders inside the final furlong to triumph by half a length from Lord Glitters, who overcame Lightning Spear to claim second place by a neck. Century Dream was a nose away in fourth. US raider Yoshida (Heart’s Cry) closed late to finish fifth.

Although the victory was a first Royal Ascot success for Eve Johnson Houghton, her former trainer father Fulke celebrated ten victories at the Royal meeting as far back as 1966 with Haymaking (Coronation Stakes), followed by such as Double Form (1979 King’s Stand) and Ile de Bourbon (1978 King Edward VII), and the Cork and Orrery Stakes (now the Gr.1 Diamond Jubilee) winners Parsimony (1972) and Posada (1988).

For Accidental Agent, this Gr.1 was his first success in Pattern company, with his previous four victories having come in his maiden and the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes sales race at two and two handicaps last year. Listed-placed at three and again this season when third to Century Dream in the Paradise Stakes over yesterday’s course and distance, he also finished sixth in the Gr.1 Lockinge Stakes last month.

He is the first foal out of Roodle (Xaar), a half-sister to the dual Gr.2 winner and Gr.1-placed Prize Exhibit (Showcasing) and the Listed-placed Harbour Master (Harbour Watch). She is a daughter of Roodeye (Inchinor), who was Listed-placed at two and is a half-sister to Gallagher (Bahamian Bounty), runner-up in the Gr.1 Prix Morny as well as being twice Gr.2-placed at two, and the Listed-placed Quick Wit (Oasis Dream). It is a family that the Johnson Houghtons have had for several generations.

A delighted Sheikh Mohammed added: “Blue Point was following the fast pace and was travelling very well. He hit the rise and gave more. I think that he is a very good horse. Charlie has been with us for a long time and he knew what we want – we always talk to each other about things. William is a very good jockey. They are two very good people.”

Blue Point is a half-brother to the Gr.2 Railway Stakes winner Formosina (Footstepsinthesand), out of a placed half-sister to the high-class sprinter Tumbleweed Ridge (Indian Ridge).

WITHOUT PAROLE LOCKS UP ST JAMES’S PALACESeven years after his illustrious sire Frankel landed the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes, Without Parole emulated him in some style to give John Gosden and Frankie Dettori a Gr.1 double on the opening day of the Royal meeting.

The victory was a crowning moment for owner-breeder John Gunther and his daughter Tanya, who saw their colours carried to victory less than a fortnight after Justify (Scat Daddy), bred by the pair at their Glennwood Farm in Kentucky, landed the US Triple Crown.

The unbeaten Without Parole was making only his fourth start with victory in the Listed Heron Stakes his previous biggest success. In yesterday’s contest on the Round Mile, Dettori was content to settle in third place, as Ryan Moore set a strong pace on U S Navy Flag (War Front), with Kings Shield (Scat Daddy) in second. Swinging into the home straight, Without Parole was sent in pursuit of the frontrunner, overhauling him around a furlong from home and surging clear. Gustav Klimt (Galileo) gave chase in second and looked to be gaining, but the winner had flown and the margin of victory was half a length – a little less than the three quarters of length by which Frankel triumphed over Zoffany seven years ago. Wootton (Wootton Bassett) finished third, three and three quarter lengths behind the runner-up.

“It is a dream come true. In all the 20 years I’ve been coming back to Royal Ascot it was my dream to have a runner; this is unbeliveable,” said an emotional Gunther. “This was the most important and means everything to me. To be able to mate the mare to Frankel and Juddmonte giving me that nomination even though the mare was unproven. To go through all that and then watch Without Parole being raised as a yearling was so special.

“The mare had not proven herself but, after we bred her to Frankel, she got her Gr.1 winner [Tamarkuz] and proved herself. Juddmonte allowing me to bred that mare to Frankel meant everything, believe me, because I love Frankel so much.”

When asked if the victory meant more to him than that of Justify in the Triple Crown, he answered honestly: “It did and does and always will.”

Following the race, the stewards gave Dettori a seven-day ban and a £4,300 fine for using his whip above the permitted level.

Out of the unraced Lemon Drop Kid mare Without You Babe, Without Parole is a half-brother to the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile victor Tamarkuz (Speighstown). His dam is a half-sister to the dual Gr.1 winner and sire Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) and the Gr.3 winner and Gr.1-placed sire Andromeda’s Hero (Fusaichi Pegasus).

CALYX KING OF THE COVENTRY Four years after his victory in the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes, Kingman became a Royal Ascot-winning sire as Calyx stormed to success in the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes.

Homebred by Juddmonte, Calyx only made his debut ten days ago, hacking up by five lengths at Newmarket in novice company. Pitched straight into Group level by John Gosden, Calyx rose to the occasion yesterday as the field of 23 juveniles split in two. Approaching the final furlong in the 6f contest, he pulled clear of the stands side group with ease, under Frankie Dettori trouncing his nearst rival on that side of the track by around ten lengths. His main challenge came from the far side group, with Advertise (Showcasing) claiming second place for Phoenix Thoroughbreds by a length, just ahead of the favourite Sergei Prokofiev (Scat

“Calyx is a bit of show-off. I had to give him a bit of time. His father never ran until July, whereas this boy has been out in June.”

Dettori added: “I thought it was an amazing performance, the way he put the others to bed. He is a beautiful raw talent; this is only his second start, so imagine how much better he could get.”

Calyx is the first winner out of Helleborine (Observatory), winner of the Gr.3 Prix d’Aumale over a mile at two and runner-up in the Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac. She is a full-sister to the Gr.1 Sprint Cup heroine African Rose, now dam of the Gr.3 juvenile winner Fair Eva (Frankel).

MONARCHS RULES IN WOLFERTONJohn Gosden and Frankie Dettori celebrated a Royal Ascot treble as Monarchs Glen triumphed in the Listed Wolferton Stakes. The scintillating victory also gave a double on the day for Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte operation and the great Frankel.

Chain Of Daisies (Rail Link) took the field along in the 1m2f contest before Euginio (Fastnet Rock) took up the running in the home straight. Running in a first-time hood, Monarchs Glen charged up to take the lead a furlong from home and won cosily by a length from Euginio, with the same distance back to the third-placed Muntahaa (Dansili).

“I took a chance and it worked out. I didn’t expect this one to win, so it has been an amazing day – three rides and three winners! I’m making up for last year,” added Dettori, who missed last year’s meeting due to injury.

The four-year-old was last seen when well beaten in the Gr.1 Dubai Turf at Meydan, but had scored in both Listed and Gr.3

Daddy), who burst clear of the pack in the final half a furlong to claim third place by a neck.

The winning trainer commented: “Calyx is very talented. His father was exceptionally talented and Calyx has all of those attributes.

“I think the high draw might not be the best draw. In the Queen Anne, low numbers were first, second and third. I couldn’t believe that Calyx hung on like he did. It was a tough ordeal for him to race on his own on just his second start. He is worth more than the winning margin of a length, to say the least.

Coronation Cup at Epsom just shy of three weeks ago. Trainer John Gosden offered the rationale that he does not like travelling downhill, which will be less of a problem here, the scene of his seven-length demolition in the Gr.1 Champion Stakes at the end of last season.

He was chased home by Poet’s Word (Poet’s Voice) that day and the same may play out today. The five-year-old travelled to Sha Tin and Meydan during the winter, but returned to domestic action when winning the Gr.3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes. He was four and a half lengths ahead of Desert Encounter (Halling), who lines up again today.

Cliffs Of Moher (Galileo) was well behind Cracksman in the Champion Stakes, but his form was petering out and this year he has won the Gr.2 Mooresbridge Stakes and come second in the Gr.1 Tattersalls Gold Cup. He could reduce the deficit this time.

Another interesting contender is Eminent (Frankel). A dual Group scorer last year, he finished the season coming third in the Gr.1 Irish Champion Stakes. He was disappointing on his return to action in the Gr.3 Huxley Stakes at Chester recently, but was diagnosed with a fibrillating heart post-race.

Hawkbill (Kitten’s Joy) failed to fire in the Coronation Cup, but had put up some good performances last season and won twice in Dubai in March, most notably when beating Poet’s Word in the Gr.1 Dubai Sheema Classic. He will be dropping back to ten furlongs for the first time since finishing fifth in last season’s Gr.1 Prix Ganay.

The field is completed by the outsider Royal Julius (Royal Applause), who was last seen winning the nine-furlong Gr.2 Premio Presidente della Repubblica.

company last year, ending his season with success in the Gr.3 Darley Stakes. A half-brother to two winners, he is out of the Gr.3-winning Lear Fan mare Mirabilis, also Gr.1-placed over 7f. She is a half-sister to the dual Gr.1 winner Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat) and Gr.2 1m2f winner Burning Sun (Danzig), from the family of the Gr.3 winner Media Nox (Lycius).

LAGOSTOVEGAS MAKES WINNING BIDWillie Mullins landed his fourth Ascot Stakes yesterday as Lagostovegas (Footstepsinthesand) finished best of all in the 2m4f marathon handicap.

Third in a Listed mares’ hurdle at Killarney last month, she led home a 1-3-4-5 for the Mullins runners, with Dubawi Fifty (Dubawi) spoiling the party by taking second for trainer Karen McLintock a length behind the winner, and Stratum (Dansili) a length and a quarter away in third. Chelkar (Azamour) finished fourth, with Whiskey Sour in fifth.

Mullins commented: “She had probably done the fastest work of the five ahead of the race and that made me doubt whether she would get the trip. I spoke to John [Donohue, owner] and expressed my doubts about running, but he said his wife and two daughters were in town shopping for outfits to wear, so I said, ‘John, I’ll see you on Tuesday’.

“I’m not too worried about going back to jumping for any of them. If they can pay their way on the Flat that is what they will do and now there is more money in staying races we will try to capitalise.”

A winner three times previously on the Flat and third in last autumn’s Cesarewitch, Lagostovegas was bred by Keith Griffin out of the winning Montjeu mare Reine De Coeur. The next two dams were unraced and each produced four winners, the third dam, Sudden Frost (Northern Dancer), being a full-sister to the Gr.1 Derby winner and sire Secreto and a three-parts-sister to the multiple Champion hurdler Istabraq (Sadler’s Wells).

EBF JOHNNIE LEWIS MEMORIAL ABINGDON STAKES, 10F, 3YO FILLIES, NEWBURYRun in memory of the popular and respected agent of both the BBA and CBA on good to firm ground, this was of a good standard and the gallop was decent, with a genuine star perhaps the winner. Sea Of Class (Sea The Stars) travelled smoothly at the rear under her penalty from winning the Listed Haras de Bouquetot Fillies’ Trial over course and distance and only had to be ridden with consideration to score by two lengths. She bypassed the Gr.1 Oaks on the ground of inexperience, but she will step up to Gr.1 company now, the only question being whether it will be over this trip in the likes of the Pretty Polly Stakes or the Nassau Stakes, or over 12f in such as the Irish Oaks. She should get that trip for sure.

winner was ninth when joint-favourite for the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup and this previous Gr.2 and dual Gr.3 victor, who ran a fine second in the Gr.2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier on his seasonal bow, will head back to France to try and win the Gr.2 Prix Kergorlay for the second year running. He is part-owned by Antipodeans and he will likely have another crack at the race that stops the nation, and one could imagine the second could take a similar route.

EBF CATHEDRAL STAKES, 6F, 3YO+, SALISBURYThis was a very fair race, albeit with only five runners, and Cardsharp (Lonhro) ran out the clear victor after sitting in the box seat. A busy juvenile career of ten starts saw him land the Gr.2 July Stakes and come third in the Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes and three other Gr.2s. Three starts this year made it look as if he had not trained on, so it is good to see him on the way back. He is in the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup and Gr.3 Jersey Stakes and, with the way he has been campaigned all his life, he might well turn out in one of them, with more place money at least a distinct possibility.

MIDSUMMER STAKES, 5F, 3YO+, CORKThis was pretty ordinary fare and the 93-rated Dali (Scat Daddy) was able to make all. The three-year-old has finished fourth in this grade and has been well held at Gr.3 level, as well as being beaten in handicaps – this was only his second win in nine starts, which says everything about this race. Hopefully he will get confidence from this and can improve to become a proper black-type sprinter.

GANTON STAKES, 8F, 3YO+, YORKThough there were only five runners on ground the fast side of good, this was a strong contest that involved some worthy veterans, none more so than Sovereign Debt (Dark Angel), who looked better than ever last year at the age of eight, landing a Gr.2 and Gr.3, but had been well held at that level this term. Back in this grade, where he has such a fine record, he took his fifth Listed contest, worrying the equally admirable Arod (Teofilo) out of the prize by a neck, the latter shouldering three pounds for a Listed win last time out. One can see a number of this field meeting again over the season and great value for money they give too.

SCURRY STAKES, 5F, 3YO, SANDOWN PARKThree of the ten runners were rated just over 100, but they disappointed and the race took less winning than it should. Three-year-old Haddaf (Dawn Approach) has been quite highly tried in his career for two Listed places to his name, even though he was well beaten at the grade on his previous start. He likes this track, it seems, having won a decent handicap over course and distance two starts ago, and is now three from four this season. He will not be that easy to place, but might be improving.

GRAND CUP STAKES, 14F, 4YO+, YORKAll eight runners on ground the fast side of good were rated more than 100 and the course record was broken after a strong gallop. Four-year-old Weekender (Frankel) set out to make all and very nearly did so, but was collared by Marmelo (Duke Of Marmalade), like him rated 114, with a neck between them at the line. The

Four ran in a fillies’ conditions race over seven on good to firm ground at Fairyhouse on Friday evening, but far from being run at a crawl, two of the three that counted on ratings took each other on and the 95-rated Surrounding (Lilbourne Lad) swooped from behind and won quite handily. She will run in good handicaps for now but might transcend them in time.

Two-year-old Marie’s Diamond (Footstepsinthesand) has been very consistent over his short career of four starts, winning his first, coming second in a conditions race, then being beaten when favourite in the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom and finally victorious in a median auction novice over six on ground the fast side of good at Chester on Saturday, making all. He has run to a mark in the mid to upper 80s on all his runs except Epsom, which will not make him easy to place. He should have a chance in a good nursery, though he holds an entry in the Gr.2 Railway Stakes and in the Listed Gold Trophy at the end of the year, with the latter the more realistic, obviously.

Another who will be best routed through good nurseries could be Sunsprite (Kodiac), who won at Bath on his second start and shouldered a penalty to victory in a decent novice over six on good to firm ground at Salisbury on Sunday by a short head after making all. The handicapper will probably think he knows how good he is, which makes matters more difficult, but he has the right attitude.

The median auction race over seven on good to soft at Sligo yesterday evening was not a hot contest, but gone are the days when the big yards left such tracks to the smaller concerns. Even so, Tim Doyle saw off an odds-on shot from Dermot Weld’s with Krispen (Footstepsinthesand), and with relative ease too. Rated 79, he should not go up much and could win another handicap.

The five-furlong all-age EBF conditions race over five at Beverley on good ground was a rather more worthy affair, although only five ran, as three were rated over 100 and Judicial (Iffraaj) was a deserved and comfortable winner of the contest for the second time, at odds-on. The six-year-old had come a fine second in the Gr.3 Palace House Stakes before getting no run on his last start and he merits a Listed win after several places at Stakes level over a long career principally as a useful handicapper.

WOLFERTON STAKES, 10F, 4YO+, ROYAL ASCOTWith no handicaps allowed to carry Listed status this year, the Ascot Authority have gone both ways with their two of this week, reducing the Sandringham Stakes to a handicap and making this race a pure Listed race. It makes relatively little difference to this one, as it would have stood up as a strong Gr.3 anyway and would have been a tight handicap, had it been run as such. The winner was handicapped a little, as it happens, as he was carrying a penalty for Gr.3 and Listed wins last year. Monarch’s Glen (Frankel) was top-rated on 115 and, after meeting with interference in the usual hubbub that is a Royal Ascot large field, he found a gap and cruised through. Though he bombed in the Gr.1 Dubai Turf, he should surely win more Group races on this evidence, even a Gr.1, especially in such as the US.

CONDITIONS RACESNew Winds (New Approach) had looked useful when winning on debut at Newmarket and, after finding soft ground at Doncaster not to her liking next time out, she returned to the level she achieved at headquarters and made all with her penalty in an EBF fillies’ novice over 6f on good to firm ground at Haydock Park last Wednesday, holding on by two necks after idling in front. She may well head for the Gr.2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes next, though she would have to find more to take a hand there.

Certain Lad (Clodovil) looked to face something of a task to shoulder a penalty of three pounds in a novice over 7f on what was now fast ground at Haydock the following day, but he is tough and game and, despite sweating and running with the choke out somewhat, he took the lead a furlong out and held promising debutant Pablo Escobarr (Galileo) by a head. He will not be easy to place, but he has shown the right attitude.

Another tough cookie is Chapelli (Poet’s Voice), who won on debut at Catterick by a short head and stepped up on that to take an EBF novice over 5f by a head under her penalty, making all. She is in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes later this week and Charlie Johnston believes her to be of that quality. She looks to have a bit to find, but clearly she does just enough and may have more in the locker, and she may get further in time, though speed is clearly her greatest asset.

AUSTRALIARACING AND BREEDING NEWS FROM

Australian-bred Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock), pictured winning at the Curragh, will contest Saturday’s Gr.1 Diamond Jubilee. © Caroline Norris

THIS WEEK’S HEADLINES

IPSWICH CUPIt was a relatively quiet weekend across Australia, with the high point being the Listed Ipswich Cup at Bundamba, about half an hour south west of Brisbane. The Darren Weir-trained Tradesman (Trade Fair) was sent off a short-priced favourite on the back of a gallant last start second to Egg Tart (Sebring) in the Gr.2 P J O’Shea Stakes at Doomben, and he did not let backers down, despite a few hairy moments.

Ridden by Dean Yendall, the six-year-old travelled wide throughout before going after First Crush (Husson) down the short Ipswich straight. A half head margin can never be considered comfortable, but Tradesman always looked to be doing just enough to win.

THE ROLE OF RACING IN THE COMMUNITYOver 20,000 people crammed into the quirky Ipswich racecourse to witness the Cup, another example of the role played by racing in the fabric of Australian culture. Some of the best racing days can be found at venues like Broome, Birdsville, Adelaide River and Tumit, to name but a few. A quick scan of a map will show these towns are in remote areas of the country and the annual Cup day in each is often gazetted as a local public holiday. That enables all and sundry to congregate at the track and enjoy what usually turns into a giant party, interrupted by the occasional horse race.

Such days also do wonders for local tourism, as a town’s reputation for having a great raceday spreads faster than a bushfire on a windy day and that brings the city slickers, who spend their money on accommodation and entertainment, therefore providing a spike for the local economy.

A Sydney radio station recently asked, if given the opportunity, whether the average punter would prefer a road trip to a good country race meeting with a few mates or a week at Royal Ascot? The result: travel agents with excess flights to London would have been disappointed.

ROYAL ASCOTSpeaking of Royal Ascot, there will be plenty of bleary-eyed Aussies at work each morning this week after staying up through the night to watch the pageantry and excitement of the Royal meeting. Thanks to a vastly improved press coverage over the past five years or so, the meeting has managed to spill over from just the racing news into the general sporting media on a broader scale. The prospect of decent British weather in June entices many Aussies to head for England in high summer, with the split between attending Royal Ascot or Wimbledon about 50/50. It would be interesting to take a poll of anyone who has experienced Royal Ascot, Cheltenham and the Melbourne Cup carnival and see which one ranked as the most popular.

Sunday is sure to be a day of rest for many after we cheer on Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) and Redkirk Warrior (Notnowcato) in the Gr.1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes. Just like the Bee Gees and Leo Sayer, we have claimed Redkirk Warrior as one of our own now that he is trained by David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig. Since being based at rural Euroa, the seven-year-old has graced the Flemington straight track on five occasions for four wins, including three times at Gr.1 level, and, with reports suggesting he has settled in well, everything points to him making a strong challenge on Saturday.

It will not be the chestnut gelding’s first trip to Ascot, as he won a three-year-old 0-95 handicap there back in July 2014 over ten furlongs. Given his breeding, it was unlikely anyone in the William Haggas yard then would have thought he would have the speed required to win a Golden Jubilee.

THE EVERESTThe idea of The Everest, an unabashed clone of the Stronach Group’s The Pegasus in America, was seen by many down here as gimmicky, but the idea grew and Sydney-siders embraced the concept, with a massive crowd attending the inaugural running last October.

We are still some four months off the race’s second renewal, yet already the ramifications of the concept are having an effect on the racing landscape, with slot holders and potential candidates jostling for the best deals and trainers trying to map out suitable programmes for their charges without knowing if they will get a start.

Last week, the triple Gr.1-winning filly Shoals (Fastnet Rock) became the fifth horse announced for the race when slot holder Star Casino did a deal with owners Jonathan Munz and John Messara to get her on board. She joins Trapeze Artist (Snitzel), Redzel (Snitzel), In Her Time (Time Thief) and Brave Smash

RACING AND BREEDING NEWS FROM AUSTRALIA ~ CONTINUED

(Tosen Phantom) as confirmed, the benefit of an early deal meaning their trainers can confidently set a programme geared at peaking for the 13th October feature and the slot holders knowing they have secured probably five of the best sprinters in local racing at present.

On the other side of the fence there are at least a dozen, probably nearer 18, horses out there that could fill the remaining seven slots. For the trainers of some of those horses the next few weeks are crucial for which path they take their charges down.

As an example, Pat Webster, trainer of another three-time Gr.1 winner in Happy Clapper, needs a deal done as soon as possible. His rising eight-year-old is an outstanding miler, but he races so well fresh that breakneck speed over 1200m in The Everest should see him finishing strongly. Webster either has to keep the son of Teofilo fresh, hoping a slot holder comes courting, or start getting the miles into “Clapper’s” legs in readiness to defend his crown in the Epsom Handicap, run a fortnight before The Everest.

As for those slot holders still to do a deal, they now have to either choose from what is left, play the waiting game and hope a star emerges in early spring, or even look overseas. Some slot holders have already announced they will be taking a keen interest in both the Gr.1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes and Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes this week, with Lady Aurelia and Harry Angel two prospective candidates. Godolphin do not hold a slot, but another high-class showing from Harry Angel (Dark Angel) will surely lead to offers to Godolphin’s Australian man Vin Cox. For the foreign raiders, this year might be a time to come on down, as the sprinting ranks do not look overly strong.

TATTERSALL’S CLUB TIARAThe final Gr.1 event of the Australian season is Saturday’s Tatts Tiara for fillies and mares at Doomben over 1350m and, as usual, it is an intriguing race.

There are 37 nominations to be whittled down to just 16 runners and five emergencies, based on prize money won over the last two years. For many this will be their last chance to earn that all-important Gr.1 success, as probably half of the field will be making their last racetrack appearance before heading to the breeding shed with spring fast approaching. As is always the case, the entry list is littered with mares who surprising have not previously won a Gr.1, Missrock (Fastnet Rock), French Emotion (Snitzel) and Danish Twist (Dane Shadow) to name a few.

The Bjorn Baker-trained three-year-old Champagne Cuddles (Not A Single Doubt) heads most markets, thanks to third placings in the Gr.1 Kingsford-Smith Cup and Stradbroke Handicap in open company on her past two starts. Fellow three-year-old Moss Trip (Mossman) will be hard to beat if the track comes up soft, while Prompt Response (Beneteau) can be expected to be her usual consistent self.

Spotlight ON HOT TO TROT SYNDICATE - BY AMY BENNETT

Hoping lightning strikes twiceOne of the abiding images from the winner’s enclosure at

Royal Ascot last year was the rapturous greeting that awaited the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes heroine Heartache

(Kyllachy) from her many owners in the Hot To Trot Racing syndicate. The syndicate will be hoping that history can repeat itself on

Friday when Heartache contests the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup, while the sister syndicate 2HotToTrot will be hoping lightning can strike twice as Kurious (Kuroshio) bids to emulate Heartache in the Queen Mary Stakes today.

2Hot To Trot is the second syndicate set up by manager Sam Hoskins and bloodstock agent Luke Lillingston, which has leased six two-year-olds this year, while Heartache is one of a sextet representing the original Hot To Trot syndicate.

“We’ve always just had one syndicate leasing six horses, but, after Heartache last year, we had so much interest that Luke and I thought we should do another syndicate with two-year-olds,” Hoskins explains. “There are 80 members in 2HotToTrot, all of whom have paid just over £2,000 for the year.”

The syndicate got taste of things to come on 7th June when two of their fillies debuted against each other in a 5f novice contest at Sandown. Heartwarming (Showcasing), a half-sister to Heartache trained by Clive Cox, was the more fancied of the pair, facing off against ten rivals including Kurious, who is trained by Henry Candy. The latter led from the start and showed real battling qualities to repel all challengers, holding off Heartwarming to score by three quarters of a length, with over three lengths back to the third-placed Satisfying.

“She was Henry’s first two-year-old runner of the year and I honestly thought she would need the run, but she came out of the stalls like a breeze-up horse!” Hoskins says. “She showed how tough she is; she wasn’t going to let the runner-up past her.

“Henry felt afterwards that she should be kept to five [furlongs]. I told him that, although we are a syndicate, he didn’t need to feel pressured to run her at Royal Ascot; we are not in it just for days out, but he said last week that he thought she deserved to run.”

Hoskins is quick to play down the chance of Kurious providing a second lightning strike for Hot To Trot, but there is a feeling of déjà vu when he says that the American filly Chelsea Cloisters (First Samurai) looks “unbeatable”, as he cautiously notes: “They said that last year and we beat Happy Like A Fool. If she can be in the first four we will be over the moon.”

Kurious is one of a quintet of winners for her first-season sire Kuroshio (Exceed And Excel) from just 12 runners, along with the Listed-placed Daphinia, who also lines up in today’s Queen Mary Stakes. Kuroshio shuttled to Overbury Stud for a single season in 2015, standing for £3,500 and covering only 33 mares, resulting in a single European crop of 22 foals.

Kurious’s dam Easy To Imagine (Cozzene) would have been one of the better-connected mares to visit Kuroshio’s court, given that she has already produced the Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye victor Tangerine Trees (Mind Games), that tough and consistent sprinter who was still running and winning at the grand old age of 11.

Hoskins was involved in trying to fill Kuroshio’s book in his role as nominations assistant with Overbury Stud.

“I didn’t do a very good job of getting mares to him, did I?” he laughs ruefully. “He was announced in January, so no-one really knew who he was because he was Australian and nobody could see him at the December Sale, so I think breeders just didn’t know enough about him. He should have got more soldiers on the ground, but at least the soldiers he got are doing really well.

“I believe Marie Matthews, who bred Kurious, wanted a smaller, precocious stallion for Easy To Imagine and he fitted the bill perfectly. The filly was only broken in February. She was with Hetta Stevens, who said she was very quick to learn, and she also spent some time with Gary Witherford. She was always a gorgeous filly and I hope we can get some black type with her for her breeder.”

A filly in full possession of black type is Heartache, who triumphed in last year’s Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes before finishing a close third in the Gr.2 Prix Robert Papin and crowning her season with victory in the Gr.2 Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster.

On her return to action last month in the Gr.2 Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock, she disappointed when only finishing sixth.

“We were a bit disappointed with her run. Clive [Cox] had been bullish about her chances beforehand, as she had done well over the winter, but he felt with hindsight that she needed the run and she did lose a lot of weight during the race.

“Clive has always felt that she would get 6f and she was beaten too far out at Haydock to say she didn’t stay. We have to roll the dice with her again and certainly the pressure is now off going into the race. She is very worthy of her place in the line-up.”

Heartache was bred by Whitsbury Manor Stud, an operation with whom Hot To Trot has a fine track record; every horse leased from the Hampshire nursery has won for the syndicate.

All of the fillies in the Hot To Trot syndicates are leased for two years with an option to renew the lease if their breeder does not want to breed from them or sell.

“The aim is to have fillies who will run early and give people the most enjoyable experience of ownership.,” Hoskins says. “We have had plenty of winners since we began six years ago and we are lucky to have such a great bunch of members who all get on so well and really enjoy racing, whether we’re at Brighton or Royal Ascot.

“We also organise trainer visits and other interesting trips, such as to studs, racecourse walks and breakfast with the stars as well, as we think it is important to give people a broad experience of the racing world.

“I think that with Flat racing, people can perceive it to be just sheikhs and millionaires and they think there is no chance of competing. It was great to look around the parade ring last year at Ascot and see who else was in there, and now we have proved that anyone can win.”
