THE Institute of Chartered Accountants ofIndia will hold its campus placement programon February 20 and 21, 2014. As many as525 candidates are likely to participate in theplacement drive in Pune. Shiwaji BhikajiZaware, chief coordinator of ICAI-Pune, said,“This is an excellent opportunity for toplineIndian companies to recruit the finest mindsin the accountancy space. For budding char-tered accountants, the campus placementprogram means they can start their career ona high note and get exposed to managingfinances of some of the biggest Corporatesand conglomerates. We expect strongresponse from Indian corporate sector.”

FRANCE, officially called theFrench Republic, is the thirdlargest and wealthiest countryin Europe. The use of its officiallanguage, French, is in vogue inseveral places in India. Weanalyse why studying in Franceis a good choice.
Why study in France?The quality of French highereducation is widely recognisedand is based on the “LMD”
degree structure -- Licence,Master’s, and Doctorate.Licence requires threeyears of study, Mastersneeds five and Doctorate
eight years of studyandresearch.
PopularityFranceattracts stu-dents fromacross theworld. It is cur-rently the third
most populardestination forinternational stu-dents. Yet manyprospective stu-dents are
unaware that flu-ency in French is not
necessary to study inFrance. Courses inEnglish are becomingmore common, though alittle more expensivethan ones taught inFrench. But it is recom-mended to have workingknowledge of French tomake the most of yourexperience there.
When to applyThe period of enroll-ment is generallybetween December 1and January 31 every
year. English language proficien-cy is tested for all coursestaught in English and scores ofTOEFL/IELTS are accepted. Forall graduate/ degree courses,one should be at least 18 yearsof age and have successfullycompleted 12 years of formaleducation. Entry to all postgraduate courses will require aBachelor’s degree. You have tosubmit transcripts, resumesand in some cases, essays,too. Generally while submittingthe application, the colleges/universities will only ask forcopies of the relevant docu-ments. Once accepted into aprogram, students will need tosend original copies.
University/ college studiesbegin in September every year.The application deadline formost courses is January end,but students need to check thedates and details before apply-ing to the Universities of theirchoice. Some deadlines mayvary depending on the courseand the college applied to.
Pop choicesPopular fields of study areComputer Science, BusinessAdministration, Engineering andHuman Resource Management.Tuition fees in France rangebetween 9,000- 10,000 Eurosper year for Bachelor/under-graduate courses and between18,000-19,500 Euros per yearfor Masters courses. MBA inmost colleges ranges between28,000-30,000 Euros for theentire course. The fee may varycollege and course-wise.Students can choose their col-leges and universities as pertheir budget.
ChecklistOne must have a passport andobtain a student visa. A longstay student visa is generallyissued for a period longer than
six months and enables a stu-dent to obtain a one-yearresidence permit. A prospectivestudent will need to prove thatthey have sufficient resources,estimated at a minimum of 500Euros a month approximately tosupport themselves withoutworking. This amount variesdepending on the city of resi-dence the course of study, lifestyle and personal expenses.
Money aidMost colleges offer scholar-ships/ financial assistance fortheir international students,though they may have differentselection criteria. A scholar-ship/ financial aid applicationwill generally be selected on thebasis of a student’s academicrecord. Some may even placeimportance on the consistencyand quality of the statement ofpurpose. Knowledge of Frenchmay not be mandatory, but willbe considered an asset.
The French government hasfunding options for Indian stu-dents. The Charpak Scholarshipprogram, run by the Frenchembassy in India, helps stu-dents get a full/ partial feewaiver at universities, and alsosome monthly stipend. TheEiffel Scholarship program,offered by the French Ministryof Foreign Affairs, covers traveland living expenses, healthinsurance and accommodation.It is important to note thatscholarships are mostly givento Postgraduate students, evenby the French government.
