Dear Parents and Guardians,

Christmas wishesOn behalf of the Galen staff, I offer all parents a merry Christmas and a happy new year. May you find the peace of Christ this festive season.

Year 12 resultsI want to congratulate all Year 12 Galen students for their success this year in VCE, VET and VCAL. We are very pleased to announce 100% success rate at VCE and that 14 Galen students have achieved their Senior VCAL. This is a great outcome in a school of just over 1,000 students.

We are very pleased to announce that the Dux for 2013 is Sean Bartlett with an ATAR of 96.45. We are equally pleased to report that so many students have achieved to the best of their ability and have given themselves the best possible opportunity to move onto their preferred next steps whether that be employment, further study or a “Gap” year.

Parents, staff and the community should be proud of the efforts of the 2013 cohort. This was one of our biggest Year 12 cohorts for some years and the breadth of opportunities available to our students through VCE, VCAL and VET has ensured that our senior students have been able to tailor courses to suit their particular needs and interests. Today’s results will enable them now to capitalize on having accessed that range of opportunities.

We are equally proud of all students who put in their best effort regardless of their subject scores and ATARs and regardless of whether they completed the VCE or VCAL.

I would also like to commend those Year 11 students who undertook Year 12 subjects this year: the experience and the learning you gained will serve you well as you move into your final year of school.

Uniform requirements in 2014As has been mentioned in the previous newsletters and to the students at school, all students are expected to be in full and correct uniform from the start of the year.

Of particular concern is the wearing of the correct girls’ shorts. The correct shorts for girls can only be purchased directly from the Galen Uniform Shop. We have had a number of girls over the past year wearing non-uniform shorts, especially those with button-up hems. These are not part of the Galen uniform and will not be permitted under any circumstances next year.

For a full description of the correct uniform, please visit our website: www.galen.vic.edu.au and look on the right hand side of the homepage under “Quick Links” for the “Uniform Brochure”.

Office closing and opening datesThe Galen front office will be closed from Wednesday 18 December 2013 and will re-open on Monday 20 January 2014.

Have a wonderful Christmas everyone!

Best wishes,

Bernard NealPrincipal

Lost PropertyWe have a VERY large mountain of Lost Property at the Main Office. If you have lost anything this year and have not found it, please come and check if we have it at the Main Office. Even if you have checked before, it may have been brought in from another part of the school. There are also many items that are not school uniform. If these items are not claimed by the end of Term 4, they will be given to charity before Christmas.

On Monday the 25th students studying Italian were treated to a lunch of Penne e Spiralli pasta with Ragu followed by Panettone. In the afternoon the year 8 students watched a Commedia dell’Arte performance of ‘Arlecchino e La Principessa’. In their respective classes the year 8 students researched and made masks that celebrated the masked characters of the Commedia dell’Arte and Carnevale.
