Elysian Fields

26 August - 18 September 2009

Nicholas Hales, Katharine Jacobs, Liezel Prins, Marlise Keith, Colleen Alborough, Rat Western

A group show dealing with the dual realities of human existence and our need to escape from the physical realities at times. Elysian Fields becomes a symbolic representation of that place that exists out of time and space where the artist can escape to and draw inspiration from.

Elysian Fields as a term and concept has its roots in Greek Mythology and refers to the section of the underworld that is the final resting place of souls of the heroic, virtuous or mortals related to the gods.

The Olympians and Muses

solo exhibition by Godfried Donkor 18 september – 17 October Opening Friday 18 September

The series of boxers and the Madonnas form the basis of works in the exhibition ’The Olympians and muses’, the first solo exhibition by Ghanaian-British artist Godfried Donkor in South Africa. The featured boxers series are life size paintings of 18th and 19th century pugilists whose sporting exploits and lifestyle inspired the folklore and mythology of their time and profession. These were some of the earliest heroes to capture the public’s imagination. Sourced from archival illustrations and photos, the fighters are painted on a background of figures and text taken from the Financial Times newspaper. Donkor has always been fascinated by the sporting cul-ture and mythology associated with this art form which can be found in all societies .

The Madonna series was inspired by the glamour and music culture during a resi-dency in Trinidad and Tobago. Most of the models are local and are part of the ongo-ing religion of ’carnival’.

Godfried Donkor’s collages fuse symbols of the eighteenth-century slave trade with images of contemporary Trinidadian glamour girls, set against a backdrop of pages from the Financial Times. Donkor, who was born in Ghana but now lives in London, juxtaposes these incongruous elements as a means of scrutinising themes of capitalism, globalisation and liberation. His luscious and alluring ’black madon-nas’ emerge, phoenix-like from below the decks of the lithographed slave ships, in a triumphantly brazen, carnival-like celebration of human endurance.

Exhibition runs until Saturday 17 October http://www.afronova.com

Durban Revisited: An exhibition of paintings by Jenny Parsons

Until 27 September 09 Jenny Parsons grew up in Durban, where she studied under Virginia MacKenny, Jeremy Wafer and Clive van den Burg, graduating with a Higher Diploma in Fine Art from the Natal Technikon in 1988. She held a number of exhibitions in Durban before moving to Cape Town, where she has lived and worked for the past 20 years.“To return to the landscape of my childhood, and the landscape in which I became a painter, has been a fascinating journey – at once familiar and foreign. Hopefully the paintings reflect the process of rediscovering the landmarks of Durban and the formative images of my early years as a painter.”
