Helen Charlston, mezzo-soprano

Hailed as a “rather special mezzo” (MusicWeb

International), Helen Charlston’s warm and

distinctive tone has cemented her as a key

performer in the next generation of British singers.

She received first prize in the 2018 Handel Singing

Competition, was a finalist in the Hurn Court

Opera Competition, and in the upcoming season

she will make her debut with the Royal Liverpool

Philharmonic (Handel Messiah) and a return to

Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (Bach St

Matthew Passion). Other 2018-19 season highlights

include performances as Kings Place, St John’s

Smith Square, and Halle Handel Festival. Her

operatic roles include First Witch (Purcell Dido and

Aeneas) at Wigmore Hall and Messaggera and

Proserpine (Monteverdi Orfeo) for Brighton Early

Music Festival. Helen's solo recordings include

Bach B minor with the Orchestra of the Age of

Enlightenment on the Hyperion label.

Toby Carr, lute

A versatile musician whose repertoire ranges from

the early renaissance to new collaborative

compositions, Toby Carr is a lutenist and guitarist

based in London. Having studied at Trinity Laban

followed by the Guildhall School, he works

professionally as a soloist, chamber musician and

continuo player. A specialist in music of the 17th

century, Toby has worked with groups and

organisations such as English Touring Opera,

Dunedin Consort, London Philharmonic Orchestra,

and RTE Symphony Orchestra. Now settled with his

wife and frequent collaborator, the harpist Aileen

by equipping outstanding musicians with the tools, skills, experience, and

networks they need to build and sustain rewarding and profitable careers.

Through an annual competitive audition process, we select classical soloists

and chamber ensembles, as well as jazz, folk, and world musicians. These

‘CMF Artists’ then engage in an innovative two-year programme, which

includes artistic and business mentoring, as well as professional development

workshops. These workshops cover a range of topics such as managing

finances, tax and pensions, legal input on copyright and contracts, plus

presentation and interview skills, promotion and publicity strategies, and

much more.

We work with the CMF Artists to develop professional promotional tools such

as websites, photos, recordings, and videos, as well as providing help with

commissioning and other projects to ensure that each musician develops a

unique niche and selling point. We present CMF Artists in our own recital series

and residencies and arrange performance opportunities at venues and

festivals throughout the UK and beyond, as well as securing airtime on BBC

Radio 3 and promotion through online, print, and social media.
