Parent drop off and pick up zonesCould parents who drop-off or pick-up their children by car please use the areas in Phillipson Street and Park Crescent designated for this purpose. We have a developing problem with a number of parents using the main driveway and sometimes the car park off Park Crescent for this purpose. This is creating dangerous congestion and hazardous conditions for both pedestrians and vehicles. So, please, no student pick-ups or drop-offs that involve driving onto school property before or after school.

Humanoid robot ready for STEM careers expoGalen Catholic College Year 8 student Lachlan Carboon was able to experience the future last Friday, assisting GoTAFE Youth Engagement Officer Kel Vincent to program a brand new NAO Robot in preparation for Galen’s STEM conference in a fortnight on Wednesday August 17th.

With a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math-ematics in education, STEM is set to be an engaging insight for students and teachers alike. Held during National Science Week, Galen will be a buzz of energy with the forefront of technology education hosted right here in regional Victoria.

GoTAFE’s Kel Vincent stated, “We decided to purchase NAO to be used as part of our engagement strategy. To build on existing robotics programs and particularly to build upon the STEM initiative in schools.”

“We are so excited to be bringing such a wide range of Exhibitors to the Expo,” said Galen Science teacher, Maree Timms. “There will be something for young and old. To have this opportunity for our students and community to see the future right here in Wangaratta is such a bonus. We are sure it will bring a newfound insight and engagement into the possibility of STEM careers. From Electric Cars, Robots dancing, meeting Airforce pilots, Drone pilots, Augmented Reality in marketing, it is simply, very exciting.”

On Tuesday 26th July, we made the trip to Shepparton to compete in the Senior Hume Basketball Tournament. An injury plagued day meant a short bench at times, with every player having to give every moment their all, resulting in a lot of fatigue as the day progressed. This did not stop their domination on the day, and because of this they will be heading to the State level in week 9 of this term. Well done! Big thanks to Josh Smart and Lewis Sharrock who were our scorers and timekeepers on the day – filling in when other teams did not have anyone.

Game 1: Galen defeated Euroa 37-36This was a fast paced game right from the first tap, that saw Dion Ploegmakers and Jac Holmes put their bodies on the line to constantly keep the ball in play, and usually with Ga-len in possession. Frazer Judd, who started the day injured couldn’t help but go on the court and give advice, along with setting up a variety of plays, one of which saw his first goal as a 3-pointer with nothing but net. Jac was a real team player working well with Lachie Bedendo, though it was Will Robinson who dominated in the second half. Jordan Storer and Will were also working well together in defense, ensuring Galen always came away with the ball; while at the other end of the court Jack Jenkin was yet again proving he had springs in his legs, despite injury. The boys worked well together with a full-court press in a game that went down to the wire. Will finished with a 3-pointer, which allowed him to be the highest goal-scorer with 17 points to his name.

Game 2: Galen defeated Myrtleford 35-24The boys used the opportunity to try some set plays, against a weaker opponent, and generally this worked in their favor, especially with Jac being all over everything, running rings around other players; backed up by Lachie putting on a scoring clinic early on. Will was popping up 3-pointers again, coming away with three for the game, and Jordy was excellent in defense. The scoreboard really did not show the actual difference between the two teams, and the boys should have had more points on the board overall, but did not always have their heads in the game. Dion finished his game with a great steal, followed by a fast break

and easy layup; with plenty of celebration to follow.

Game 3: Galen defeated Notre Dame, Shepparton 46-37Though there were no finals, this was technically the grand final match, as both teams went in undefeated. The game started in an interesting and slightly scary way with Lachie grabbing the ball from the centre and making a fast break… For the oppositions goal ring. The game was competitive and saw the Galen boys playing much better basketball, and superbly shutting down the top players in the opposition team. Jordy was shooting well all game, and finished the first half in style with a smashing 3-pointer. Not to be outdone, Will put up another set of 3-pointers. Jac was all over the court, jumping in defense and mopping up missed shots in offense also. Right down to the last minute the boys put the pressure on, and never gave their oppo-nent any leeway. As part of VET Sport and Recreation (Units 3 & 4), students took part in an excursion to Melbourne on Tuesday the 19th of July. They visited Essendon Football Clubs state of art training facilities and began with a classroom based visual presentation which utilised match day footage and discussed the science governing player training throughout the year. The second part of the visit was a practical session whereby students were taken through some fitness testing and a 1 km time trial. Students were also given a complete tour of the facilities, which included the recovery room (ice baths & spa), altitude chamber, indoor pool, gymnasium, stadium

and locker room. The second visit was to North Melbourne Football Club, where a tour of the club’s facilities was also un-dertaken. Students visited the club’s community education facility, known as "The Huddle" and were fortunate to have Todd Goldstein talk to them about his life as an AFL player and the joys and pressures that go with it. He also gave students an insight into the nutrition and training principles relevant to an AFL player. Throughout the day, there was a strong focus on the units undertaken in the 3/4 Sport and Recreation course and overall a valuable learning experience for the students.

MITTAGUNDI

Mittagundi is an Outdoor Education Centre and Pioneer Style Farm set on a stunning 400 acre property in the foothills of the Victorian High Country. Every fortnight a new journey

begins as around twenty 14-17 year olds and two Clydesdale horses walk into the property, camping overnight in the mountains.

Once there the new friends spend time working together on the farm, fencing, growing food, milking cows, working with wood, steel and wool - all without electricity! Then

embark on adventures rafting the Mitta Mitta River and abseiling off a local cliff face before walking back through the mountains and returning to civilisation.

The atmosphere at Mittagundi is simple, honest and happy. There are no watches, no timetables and no money. Instead there is an opportunity for young people to live and

work together in an environment where people matter more than anything else.

To find out more about study options join us at The Evening Event Monday 15 August, 5.30-9pmlatrobe.edu.au/evening-alburywodonga

Have you ever considered university study but then thought… “I don’t have time”, “Am I smart enough?”, “Can I afford it?”. Well you’re certainly not alone! Our students are balancing families, careers, finances and all that life throws at them, to pursue their passions and dreams. Stay tuned to find your inspiration…

A turning point for me was when I shared my own story with a group of women and I learnt how much I was able to inspire others - this one experience was the start of my journey into university study’

SOCIAL WORKMAKING A DIFFERENCE

Eve Robinson Bachelor of Human Services/Master of Social Work La Trobe University, Albury-Wodonga Campus

For Eve Robinson, university study was the golden ticket to pursuing her dreams while still being able to support her sons during their difficult teenage years. Now in her second year of a Bachelor of Human Services, Eve is passionate about using her qualifications and lived experience to make a difference to people whose lives have been impacted by family violence. ‘I considered trying to progress my career through different employment opportunities but my two sons were going through a hard time so I started exploring options to give me time at home.’Eve said she was nervous about returning to study after a long break but was keen to get out of her comfort zone – and says it’s definitely paid off.‘There are so many options for online study now but I can be quite good at isolating myself and knew I needed to improve my teamwork skills so I chose to study face to face.’Eve is excited about opportunities for placement in her third and fourth years of study, one of which she hopes to complete in an Indigenous community.

Eyes were fixed on TV sets last Monday 1st August as Galen’s own Adam Burt won himself a sweet $100,000 from TV quiz show Millionaire Hot Seat. Filmed back in April this year, Mr Burt has had a tough time keeping quiet about his success. “I was able to tell my girlfriend, mum, dad and my brother, but it has been a really long wait, and a bit nerve-wracking too.” Even getting in the seat required patience, as Mr Burt attended the show’s second-ever audition in 2009. “It’s the example of the old application form getting stuck down the

back of a filing cabinet,” he said. Knowing a bit about Buffy and American presidents helped Adam come away with $100,000. Mr Burt is arguably Galen’s most popular teacher at the moment, and the question on everyone’s lips is, ‘so what will you do with the money?’ Mr Burt, said he and girlfriend Stacey looked forward to an overseas trip with his winnings, a bit on the house and “some will get invested wisely”. Congratulations Adam!

DRIVER DYNAMICS 1300 652 693 | [email protected]

ONE YOUNG PERSON IS INJURED ON THE ROAD EVERY DAY…

Road injury is the main cause of unintentional death and hospitalisation among young people. About

¾ of all preventable deaths among 15-20 years olds are due to transport injury.

Young drivers have not yet developed the skills necessary to handle complex traffic environments or

judge risky situations properly, over estimating their own abilities and under estimating the risk

associated with driving. This can be manifested in driving behaviours such as high speeds, close

following distances, failing to comply with red signals and aggressive interactions with other road

users.

KEY FACTS

- Statistics show that young drivers are most at risk as soon as they obtain a Probationary

licence, and in the first year of driving, their risk of crashing is three times higher than an

experienced driver.

- Each year in Victoria alone, approximately 60 road users aged between 18 & 25 are killed

and 1250 are seriously injured.

- Deaths due to road crashes are higher in the 15-24 year age group than any other age group. (RACV, NRMA & AAA)
