Larger entry met a stronger trade, overall average of 169.3p/kg, highest so far in the South West for the week.

The well fleshed lambs sold to a top of 177p/kg from two vendors Harold Martin, Yarnscombe 44 kilos £78 and

Mrs L Gregory, Boyton 44.4 kilos £78.50. Nine pens over £80 to a top of £84.20 from Messrs FC & V Bealey,

Torrington.

309 DRAFT EWES & RAMS

A faster trade across the board for all ewes with the heavy ewes selling to a top of £91.50 sold by Messrs FC &

V Bealey, Torrington followed by Hazel and Graham Butt, Ashbury Court who realised £90 for Suffolk x’s. Mule

ewes to £75 for Will Prouse, Frizenham and Scotch ewes to £45.

148 STORE LAMBS

More interest in the store lambs and more could have been sold, top on the day was £63 for Suffolk x from

Brian Lynds, Brandis Corner.

Another good entry of calves, not the

superstars of last week but with an army

of buyers in attendance trade was keen as

ever.

Top price for the bull calves was £465 for

a strong Hereford x sold by Mr AA

Parsons from Congdons Shop with the

best of the younger British Blue x bull

calves to £450 om behalf of Messrs PH

Collins Partnership from Holsworthy

who also sold their best British Blue x heifers at £385. Messrs WS Bond & Sons from West Putford sold their

very smart young Limousin x bull for £448 and also Messrs MA & EM Tucker & Sons from Lifton has a nice run

of young Limosuin calves with their best bull to £418 with another at £398 and their Friesian bull calves making

£130, £90 and £88. Messrs JG & S Endacott from Halwill sold a smart British Blue x bull for £410 and Simmental

x bulls to £405 on behalf of Mrs OM Francis & Son from Egloskerry with another making £375.

Friesian bulls saw strong calves to £330 three times for weaned calves from Mr AA Parsons, Congdons Shop with another pair at £308. The younger calves to £190 for Mrs OM Francis & Son who also saw another at

£140 with a good average of over £85. The best of the stronger heifers to £450 for Mark and Karen Davey

from Lewdown with Shorthorn x heifers at £405 for Mr KA Jones from Ashwater and British Blue x heifers to

£385 for Mr IJ Boundy from Woolsery. Young Limousin x heifers to £345 for Messrs R Gorst & Son from

North Petherwin who also sold a good young British Blue x heifer at £342 and Messrs R & S Home from East

Putford sold another good young British Blue x heifer for £312 with plenty of other good young heifers between

£280 - £310.

The winners of this week’s Genus £25 vouchers for the highest priced bull and heifer calves were both won

by Messrs R & S Home of Stowford Park, East Putford with British Blues both sired by Newpole Easy the

bull making £395 and the heifer making £312.

A short entry this week saw a much stronger trade, very few forward cattle saw a top of £1080 for a 22 month

old British Blue heifer from Messrs R & S Shadrick, Marhamchurch with another British Blue from Mr R Honey,

Marhamchurch realising £1070 at 27 months old. A lot more 15 – 17 month old Native cattle this week saw a

very strong trade with Devon x Holstein steers over £800, a real improvement on previous weeks and heifers

the same breed £700 plus.

A good run of single suckled Aberdeen Angus steers and heifers from Messrs AG & LE Gifford, Milton Damerel

saw steers 18 month olds to £930 and heifers 20 months old to £830. Single suckled cattle saw a very strong

trade three Limousin x steers 8 & 9 months old from Mr C Lingham, Barnstaple reaching £860. Five quality 5

– 6 month old purebred Limousin steers from Mr G May, Port Isaac sold well at £790. A good consignment of

young Native x Holsteins from Mr R Keenor, Crediton saw Devon steers 9 months old to £515 and heifers

£410 6 months old, many more young cattle required.

Marhamchurch for a 22 month old British Blue Heifer achieving £1080.

Hereford cows from Mr N Hoffman, South Molton topped at 113p/kg for an 814 kilo cow, lighter leaner cows 100p/kg – 106p/kg. Bulls topped at 95p/kg for a 908 kilo Belted Galloway from Mr B Cowell, Wood Farm.

Top price this week was 185p/kg for a 602 kilo Aberdeen Angus steer from Mr Stan Hopper, Rydon with a

Charolais from the same farm at 182p/kg.

A smaller entry for the early month dairy sale

met with a variable trade with the quality in

milk animals making a significant premium.

Overall top price of £1800 was achieved for a 2nd pedigree calver ‘Marwin Meteor Topsy 18 GP81’ yielding 48Kgs

selling on behalf of ML Davey T/A G & R & M Davey from Northlew.

This was closely followed at £1700 for a superb

balanced 3rd calving cow giving 32Kgs, this was the

final cow from Brian Bath & Family from Bude.

Freshly calved heifers topped at £1650 for ‘Trebarn

Dominant Betty’ from Bonner Farms of Umberleigh.

A pedigree in calf heifer due Dec from Messrs TH

& JRB Laity Ltd, Falmouth topped at £1380. Served

heifers topped at £880 from Maristow Farms,

Roborough & bulling heifers at £510 from Messrs

SG & WA Tucker, Holsworthy. Freshly calved

cows & heifers are still meeting a very strong trade

& demand is still outstripping supply.
