Tracey West hair styling, taken by Stephaine Swann, make up by Nicky Rattray and head pieces by Katie Workman Winter weddings While not an obvious first choice, a winter wedding can actually be incredibly romantic - especially if you go for a Christmas or Valentine date. However, to avoid hyperthermia correct clothing is a must! Don’t worry though this doesn’t mean sacrificing your style. Michele Wheeler at Elegance & Grace says, “Look glamorous and keep warm by choosing satin based dresses, add long sleeves or marabou shrugs. “ The camera can also lie – with some clever photography. Photographer Stephanie Swann recommends beating the chill by bringing cosy socks and boots, “the dress will cover them or alternatively make them a feature!” But if you’d prefer to go for the more conventional option you can still create beautiful winter shots by illuminating your day with a glow of candles, fairylights or a roaring fire for atmospheric indoor portraits. And, we all know in England rain is a probability in most seasons, but it is of course more likely in the winter months. Dilys from Dilys Designs therefore suggests getting your groomsmen to have some large golf umbrellas at the church. “If the weather is wet or windy, the guests, bride and bridal party will be grateful of these as a potential ’barricade’ against the elements.” If the heavens decide to open it is also important to remember your footwear. Dilys says, “by placing a ‘freezer’ type bag completely over the shoes, and securing with a rubber band at the ankle.” This will avoid the shoes being damaged as you get into the church – just remember to take the bags off when you get in! When it comes to beauty, Makeup artist Nicky Rattray says, “‘Don’t forget during the winter you skin tends to be dryer, so start preparing it a month in advance, exfoliating regularly and using a good hydrating moisturiser.” And for nails Leesa Bridson at the Hidden Retreat suggests Shellac, “it is the perfect polish for the fingers and toes as it requires zero drying time, so that means no dashing from the salon wearing flip flops!” Paul McIntyre at Inside Catering’s winter menu Haddock & chilli fish cakes with chicory salad & lime aioli Roast rib of beef with celeriac mash, sautéed squash & sprouts with stock gravy Halloumi with broad beans, artichokes and tomato salsa V Winter Pimms, Pomegranate & Clementine trifle And for the cake… Helen Mansey at Belissimo Cakes says, “As well as white on white, ivory, metallics, icy blues and deep reds would all work for a winter wedding.” Spring “Spring brings beautiful buds and blooms, the perfect accompaniment for dreamy pictures,” says Stephanie Swann. “And spring showers are not to be dreaded as pretty parasol umbrellas can make wonderful accessories for images.” But dress designer Katherine Cusack always advises to remember the importance of colour. “Dusty blacks and greys can look depressing in April.” Temperatures can also be unpredictable in the spring months. Michele Wheeler recommends dresses with illusion necklines, cap sleeves or capes to provide a bit of coverage. For a rejuvenating spring treatment, Leesa says, “nothing beats a full body scrub treatment to shrug off dead skin cells after the winter. ESPA’s Salt & Oil Scrub is an exceptional skin softening body exfoliation which combines sea salts with essential oils to leave your skin nourished, smooth and supple.” As well as the weather, it is important to keep on top of the trends that are big on the season you get married. Wedding hair stylist Tracey West explains, “lace dresses and boho themes are still in this year so think about the whole picture, if you have that vintage 40’s/50’s dress and wanting a hairstyle to go with it, remember to ask for softer versions of the looks as some hair styles can look more fancy dress if not careful. The boho themes are great with flowers in the hair with soft bouncy curls, soft natural looking movement or effortless looking romantic up do.” Paul McIntyre at Inside Catering’s spring menu Seared Scallops on a spring onion and broad bean salad with Iberian bacon rashers Rump of spring lamb rubbed with wild garlic with a salad of braised asparagus & spinach with roasted Jersey Royals and a chervil mayonnaise Cauliflower, sprouting broccoli & asparagus gratin with triple cooked chips V Gooseberry tart with mint ice cream And for the cake… Helen Mansey at Belissimo Cakes says, “For the fresh feeling of spring why not opt for whites, yellows and lime greens for that clean crisp look.” Summer It’s just as important to consider the weather for a summer wedding as it is in the winter. “Umbrellas can be useful at a distance, to shield the brides’ face when looking into the sun as photos are being taken,” Dilys explains. “If it is a hot day, guests waiting outside the church will also be grateful of some unexpected shade.” Stephanie Swann continues, “If it’s baking hot, an extra shirt for the Groom is a handy idea.” Location can also affect your summer wedding outfit. Michele says, “ If you are getting married abroad try a lighter weight floaty dress in silk, chiffon or organza. You can add finishing touches such as belts, broaches, or bling to personalise a dress.” However, if you are staying in the UK, find a dress that flatters your body shape and then co-ordinate to wedding theme. “Details such as backward lace boleros to cover up for the ceremony, add a lovely touch and then take off to make the most of the summer. “ To avoid summer tan / strap lines, Leesa proposes a St Tropez full body tan. This is perfect for creating a warm golden glow rather than tango! Paul McIntyre at Inside Catering’s summer menu Grilled sea bass with crushed potatoes, orange segments & chard with salsa verde Chicken breast with a salad of samphire & Borlotti beans with a potato rosti and tarragon dressing Baked aubergine with tomato, mozzarella and parmesan V Poached pears with toffee & honey sauce And for the cake… Helen Mansey at Belissimo Cakes says, “In the height of summer flowers are in full bloom, colours are vivid and bright so why not take advantage of this and use bright beautiful blooms to inspire the decoration on your cake.” Autumn Finally for an autumn wedding Stephanie says, “embrace the rich warm colours autumn offers; be it your bouquet, table centrepieces, invitations and portrait backdrops. Combine this alongside gusts of wind and dramatic skies for spectacular effect.” Similarly, when choosing your dress Michele suggests a dress in a softer shade such as champagne or cream which you can then team with autumnal flowers to complement the look. Like spring, autumn weather can be unpredictable hairspray is therefore essential! “Different holds and brands give different effects,” Tracey recommends, “Ellenet by L’Oreal, for soft natural hair down styles or thick hair. Ellenet by L’Oreal strong hold is perfect for soft romantic up dos as this will allow your hair to stay put, but with the odd tresses falling to keep it soft. Masterpiece by Tigi for extra strong hold, this gives shine and hold great for beehives, detailed vintage looks, quiffs. You can get minis for the bridesmaids clutch bags for touch ups.” Tracey West hair styling, taken by Stephaine Swann, make up by Nicky Rattray and head pieces by Katie Workman For an autumn wedding, Michel Focard Issue 39 March / April 2013 18 Life in Petersfield 19 www.lifemags.co.uk Life in Petersfield
