All Saints Church Catherington is a listed building and is a beautiful and soundly built house

of worship that dates back, in parts to the 13th century. Alterations and extensions have

occurred over the years. The interior layout comprises the nave and sanctuary, with two

side chapels. The altar is located in a central position. There is a square tower containing

eight bells, a tower vestry and a choir vestry.

Over recent years, extensive reordering has occurred, and the building is in a state of good

repair. The interior is attractive, light and welcoming and provides a sanctuary, which is

conducive to prayer and meditation. A comparatively new Allen electronic organ provides

high quality music and a public-address system has been installed, which helps to contribute

to the enjoyment of the worship.

On the north wall is a painting dated about 1350, depicting St Michael weighing souls and

the Archangel with outstretched wings. This is purported to be the finest wall painting in

Hampshire.

The Church is located on the highest point of the Parish and has an extended churchyard.

The wooden Lychgate by the roadside is a war memorial.

A booklet on the history of All Saints Church, as is the monthly magazine can be found in the

church along with dates on planned social events, to help maintain its upkeep

It costs in the region of £274.00 a day to maintain All Saints Church. If you would like to donate towards its upkeep, so that future generations have the benefit of this beautiful setting for their wedding as you have done, donations are very welcome and much appreciated. Alternatively, you may wish to join the PARISH GIVING SCHEME, please ask for details or see booklet in church.

St. James Church Clanfield was at one time a typical old English village; it is said one of the

most picturesque in Hampshire. It was one of the 5 manors of Earl Godwin, and after the

conquest was given to Roger Montgomery who led the vanguard at the Battle of Hastings.

The old church must have been built in the 14th century. A watercolour hangs on the north

wall painted by the Revd Westall, presumably from old prints or drawings. A list of Rectors

also hangs on the north wall and it can be seen that the first was one John de Clanfield in

1305. This is probably the date of the original church. In 1767 the Parsonage House was

burnt to the ground; however, it was in 1878 that Clanfield suffered a worse loss when the

old church was pulled down and replaced by the present one at a cost of £1466-6s-0d.

The present church was built on the foundations of the old one and many of the old

tombstones have been preserved in the chancel. Both the bells and the font are medieval

and survive from the old church, as does the west window, which was originally at the

eastern end of the old building.

Since the 1940's much has changed in the present church. A carpet has been laid, a new

heating and lighting system installed, kneelers have been embroidered by members of the

congregation and the organs (the present one installed in the late 1980's) have moved

backwards and forwards from church to nave.

St James remains a listed building. Major structural repairs were made to the roof timbers in

1993/94 but St. James is a typical Victorian church built from local flint and stone from

Purbeck. Gone is the early 14th century church serving a small farming community, replaced

by a Church of many characteristics serving the growing community of the 21st century.

A warm welcome from Canon Gill, and I am delighted to forward this booklet to give a general view on the marriage procedures here at All Saints Catherington and St James Clanfield. Please read through the marriage literature ensuring all legal criteria can be met. Enclosed is an application form to complete but should you prefer to complete the forms in person, please telephone or e-mail to make an appointment.

Planning for a wedding should be one of the happiest moments in your life. Here at All Saints Church and St James Clanfield, we will guide you through each step in arranging your ideal church wedding ceremony.

There are certain things that must happen in a church wedding to ensure the marriage

complies with both UK civil and church law. In marriage you take on a whole new legal

status. The vicar knows how to advise and prepare you for your wedding day and everything

must comply with all relevant UK and Church of England laws. These are the main legal

points to consider before you begin planning: -

You must be old enough If you are under 18 years old you will need your parents’ consent to marry and by law you can not be married in the UK until you are 16.

Changes to same-sex marriage legislation Although same sex-marriage legislation is now in force, it remains the case that it is not legally possible for same-sex couples to marry in the Church of England.

Marrying away from where you live It’s possible to get married in a church that’s away from where you live if you have a certain kind of connection with it. You may be legally connected to a number of churches in different ways.

Time of wedding The wedding must take place between 8am and 6pm on any day.

Guidelines for divorcees There are special guidelines on marriage in the church if you are divorced. There may well be a way forward, but you will need to talk your Vicar about your situation to explore the possibilities for you.

Page 5: Wedding Enquiry - Weebly...Wedding Enquiry The Parishes of All Saints Church, Catherington & Saint James Church, Clanfield The Vicarage 330 Catherington Lane Waterlooville PO8 0TD

Reading of Banns Most Church of England marriages will require banns to be published before the wedding can take place. You won’t need to arrange banns until about four months before your wedding date. It is your responsibility to arrange the banns at the various Church of England parishes and to collect certificates before the marriage can legally take place

If there is not enough notice given for the banns to be read before the marriage is due to take place, or in the case of the marriage of people who are not nationals of a country within the European Economic Area, or if one or both of you does not live in England or Wales, it is recommended that the Licence procedure be used rather than banns.

Licences There are some circumstances in which you may need a Special Licence, Common Licence or a Superintendent Registrar’s Certificate to marry in church. Your vicar will let you know if these apply to you.

Documents you’ll need

All couples will need to show the vicar their passport as proof of nationality. If either or both of you are divorced, you will need to bring your decree absolute for

the vicar to see. Birth certificates Any name changes to provide evidence of your connection to the church, such as utility bills which show

you live or have lived in the parish, or your parents’ marriage certificate if they were married there, for example.

Marriage Measure connection 2008 Additionally, Non-UK residents, foreign nationals, non-European nationals may

require a special licence. Please give as much information as possible.

In March 2015, the Government made significant changes to The Marriage Laws, stating the above documents must be produced and copies taken by the church staff and be held on file; this is to comply with legalities before any marriage ceremony can

Do go the The Church of England website that covers all aspect of a church wedding. http://www.yourchurchwedding.org/your-wedding/readings.aspx covering the Canon Gill is available by e-mail or telephone for you to make contact at any time. With all good wishes as you prepare to be married. Yours sincerely

1. Payable to wards the Diocesan Board of Finance £201 2. Payable to Parochial Church Council £240 3. The marriage certificate £ 4* 4. Fee for reading of banns at this church £ 29

Total legal costs payable to this church £474

Couples who need to have additional banns readings at churches other than the marrying church are advised of the statutory payment of £29 for reading the banns and £14 for the required banns certificate; a total of £43 that will be payable to each church, other than the marrying church, which reads their banns. A banns certificate (and the associated fee) is not required from the marrying church. *This fee may be increased from April 2018 You can download the full table of fees for 2018 from the main Church of England website The Verger - £35 Although the verger is not a legal fee, a verger is required for the following reasons. The verger attends the rehearsal with the Vicar to collate your requirements for the set up the church. To lay out the church furniture according to your wedding requirements and be sure that all Health and Safety procedures are in place to comply with the church policy insurance specifications. ADDITIONAL FEES APPLY FOR THE FOLLOWING You do not have to have any of following extras, but many couples are keen to have at least some. If you choose them, itemised costs are shown. Church Organist - £80 The organist will play your choice of music as your guests arrive, as the bride arrives, and during the signing of the registers. Also played will be your choice of music as you leave the church as husband and wife. Please discuss your requirements and choices in advance with the organist. Music centre operative - £30 If your choice is not to have an organist play and wish to have music on CD’s using the church music system, then a fee of £30 will apply. This is to ensure that the church operator has knowledge of the marriage service and is aware of the structure of the ceremony. We do not recommend a CD played for hymns as this tends to disrupt the flow of the service as guests are unsure when to start singing. Growing together workshop - £18 Together with other couples, you are invited to attend an informal workshop. You will have spent many hours planning your wedding together – there is much to think about and discuss the order of service, who to invite, your dress, your cake, the honeymoon, etc. All these are important factors, but your wedding is just one day, whilst the marriage ceremony is a public lifetime commitment. Alongside the wedding preparations, it is also important to spend time together as a couple, talking through your ‘expectations of marriage’ and of ‘each other’. However, much you have in common, you are still two individuals with different personalities, backgrounds, experiences, hopes and fears. The workshop helps to guide your thinking and approach to the problems, which will always arise during your lives together. The workshop includes a light lunch with wine. Coffee and tea are served.

GROWING TOGETHER WORKSHOP

It is also important to spend time as a couple talking through your ‘expectations of marriage’

however much you may think you have in common. You are still two separate individuals,

with different backgrounds, personalities, experiences, hopes and fears. The Vicar does like

all couples to attend and it is one of the ways to meet up and chat through any niggly

questions that couples may have and be discussed in the session or privately.

Once an application has been received and approved by Canon Gill you will receive a

selection of dates for this informal meeting with other couples who are also preparing to be

married.

WE WELCOME CHILDREN The church accepts that many couples now have children before they marry. For weddings here at All Saints, we welcome children. They can walk down the aisle with Mummy, carry the rings, read a passage from the Bible, or even say a prayer. They can also receive a blessing together with Mummy and Daddy at the altar. We can include in your celebration of marriage, a thank you to God for the gift of your child or children within the same service. BAPTISM/CONFIRMATION If you, your husband or any children have not been baptised, All Saints Catherington can make it possible for them to be welcomed into the church by Holy Baptism. Please speak to the Vicar.

Church of England weddings are subject to ‘The Marriage Act, 1949’.

WEDDING BLESSING

Richard and Marilyn

As our marriage was not our first and we are of mature years, we decided to get married in Antigua, which was wonderful. The one thing that was lacking was the need to be in church and receive God’s Blessing. So, after taking to Canon Gill, it was arranged that we would have our marriage blessed in our beautiful church. So, February 2007 at the 9.30 service, the blessing took place. Family, friends and the congregation supported us, and with their blessings and good wishes made the day truly wonderful. It was then, that we felt truly married. You will normally find me at the Sunday service at 9:30, and would love to help you.

Wedding of Mr & Mrs Woodham.

On Saturday 1st August 2015 we were married at All Saints Church in Catherington. Our church ceremony was the start of our perfect day. We had been planning our wedding for approximately a year and when we first looked into having our wedding at All Saints Church, Reverend Hill and the other church members were all very helpful and welcoming. We received advice and support on planning our ceremony to suit us. Before our wedding day we had a rehearsal, this was a good opportunity to go through our ceremony with our Bridal Party and to calm any pre-wedding nerves! When our wedding day arrived the church, bells rang to mark the start of our traditional ceremony. Followed by this we started our initial celebrations in the church hall, this gave our guests a chance to have some light refreshments before moving to our wedding breakfast at The Langstone Hotel. All Saints Church and its beautiful surroundings also gave us some wonderful photographs of our special day. We would like to say thank you to all at All Saints Church for helping to make our Wedding Day perfect. Gary & Lucy Woodham

Wedding Thank You – Canon Gill and Team

Canon Gill and her team gave my family and friends a day they will never forget, and more especially my wife and myself. All Saints Church is a credit to Canon Gill and her team. The grounds are beautifully cared for, the church itself is pristine inside and out and is in such a wonderful location overlooking the Solent. Add the flowers and fantastic bell ringing and the day was complete.

The help and preparation before the service was great, as was the attention to detail at the rehearsal. Canon Gill personalised the service with some lovely touches in her addresses which made the day even more special to us. Thank you to you all, you made us the happiest couple in the world.
