President's Message by Vern Rogers, Redwood Region President This is my last President's Message for 2013. What an amazing year for the Redwood Region! The 1/1 Fun Run on New Year's Day, nine Autocrosses, the Whale to Whale Tail Tour, three Wine Tours, Porsches on the Plaza, Oktoberfest, a three-day NorCal All About the Roads tour, a tech session, the Ledson Concours, a pool party, and four Breakfast/Brunch/Dinner Runs. That makes a total of 24 events, and I have probably left one or more out. I want to send A BIG Thank You to all the Board and the members who made this amazing set of events such a success. On Saturday, December 7th, 78 members and guests of the Redwood Region gathered for our annual Holiday Party. The event was held at The Lodge at Sonoma Renaissance, not far from the town square in Sonoma. Unlike last year, theweather was dry, but the temperature was frigid to say the least. An enterprising entrepreneur could have made a killingproviding heated shuttle service from the banquet room to the back parking lot! The event kicked off with a social hour which allowed all the guests to mingle, and also to peruse the silent auction lots provided by CASA - our designatedcharity. I saw several lots that interested me, but I decided to employ my"eBay strategy" and wait until the final minute to place my bids.Unlike eBay,there would be no "robo-bidders" which improves your chances of winning theauction.

All too soon everyone moved into thebanquet room to start dinner. Thesocial hour seemed to pass veryquickly, and it was nearly impossibleto chat with everyone. Dinner wasserved in an efficient manner (tryingto serve nearly 80 guests at the sametime is a tough feat), and I found thefood to be very satisfying. During the dinner, our very dapper President, VernRogers, thanked all the volunteers for their efforts in decorating the room (which

looked very festive!), as well as all the members who contributed to the many successful events of 2013. Therepresentative from CASA, Millie Gilson, also expressed their appreciation for our support. Our Secretary, Craig Steele, announced the results of the 2013 election. None of the current officers were able to defect... As dinner was concluding, the "last call" announcement was made for silentauction bids. Executing my strategy perfectly, I was able to put in the winningbid on two different lots of wine, which also came with plush Teddy bears. I'msure my dog Leo will enjoy playing with them. At the close of the auction, wewere pleased to hear that the auction raised nearly $2,000 for CASA, this inaddition to the $4,000 donation made by the Redwood Region for 2013. Thankyou to everyone for supporting such a worthwhile cause! After dessert was served it was time to work off the big dinner with somedancing! Once again we had the good fortune to have Todd Morgan and theEmblems provide the music. Todd and his group performed a great set andthe dance floor was filled within moments. Those who weren't dancing took theopportunity to continue to socialize with friends old and new. A fun time washad by all! If you were unable to attend, I'd encourage you to block outSaturday, December 6, 2014, the date for next year's Holiday Party...hope to

see you there!

Clean cars go faster

For club members wishing to experience the performance capabilities of their Porsches, coming out for an autocross ordriver's event is a great opportunity. In addition to the fun of driving your car under closed course conditions, theinstruction and track time has inherent safety benefits that carry over to driving on the street. Redwood Region and otherZone 7 regions have experienced instructors and the resources to get you started. Golden Gate Region's Driver's Education Schedule has been posted to the Redwood Calendar. Redwood's Autocrossdates will be posted as soon as approved by the Airport.

2005 Petersen White Lightning Porsche 911 GT3 RSR - Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Long won the GTChampionship.

Official testing for the new TUDOR United SportsCar Championship (TUSCC) series has already begun, andsports car fans everywhere are discussing the new classes, the new rules, the new cars, the new venues and howit will all come together on the track. However, let's take one last look in the rear view mirror at the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), which started inMarch, 1999 at Sebring, and ended just weeks ago at Road Atlanta. The retrospective provides a basis for whatPorsche, with its 12 ALMS Manufacturer and 14 Driver Championships, thanks to its independent Porschecustomer teams, hope to accomplish going forward. When Dr. Don Panoz decided that the American sports car fan wanted to see real Le Mans sports car racing inNorth America, he put up his own money to bring a one-off event to Road Atlanta in 1998. No one knew how itwould turn out, but Porsche brought its Le Mans-winning 911 GT1 factory race cars, and other manufacturersfollowed suit. After the success of that event, Panoz, again with Porsche leading the way, announced that hewould start a series in North America in 1999 called the American Le Mans Series. Again, no one really knew who would show up for that first ALMS race at Sebring in March 1999, but oncePorsche announced its support, BMW, Corvette, Audi and others followed and the ALMS was born.

In the final season of ALMS competition, Porsche customer teams CORE Autosport, Team Falken Tire and PaulMiller Racing campaigned Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs in the GT class while multiple teams, including Alex Job, TRG,Flying Lizard, JDX Racing, NGT Motorsports and Dempsey Racing have raced in the one-make GTC class.

Redwood H is to ry - In 2007 Dav id Bunch wro te abou t the Mendoc ino Tour

Mid-afternoon finds us heading out to the Mendocino Headlands for SVR's Kite Flyingcontest. Unfortunately with the gorgeous blue skies there is NO wind to fly kites. Oneperson did get his kite up in the air by running with it, but when he had to stop at the edgeof the cliffs; his kite crashed to the ground. (ed. not like this year's tour -- so much wind, the kites crashed)

This year more than 20 members of the SVR group joinedour dinner since they heard about the "Redwine Region"dinners. Thanks to Ray Fiore for getting the dinner andwine arrangements taken care of. (ed. Ray is still taking care of business) Sunday morning Ray led some of group up Highway 1 to the Ft. Bragg Grange Hall fortheir wonderful $5 breakfast. It is like going back in a time machine to the 1950's. Someof us headed down to the Little River Inn for breakfast, then we headed back toMendocino. (ed. some things do change -- it's $7.00 now)
