The Student Perspective

Rachel Piper Policy Manager@StudentMindsOrg

Page 29: Wed 11 April 2018 - University of the West of England...Putting Mental Wealth First For our students and staff Professor Steve West Vice-Chancellor, University of the West of England

What is

‘The Student Perspective’?

Page 30: Wed 11 April 2018 - University of the West of England...Putting Mental Wealth First For our students and staff Professor Steve West Vice-Chancellor, University of the West of England

What are the challenges

students face with their mental

health, and getting their needs

met?

Page 31: Wed 11 April 2018 - University of the West of England...Putting Mental Wealth First For our students and staff Professor Steve West Vice-Chancellor, University of the West of England

Why is having the Step Change

Framework and mental health

strategies so important for

students?

Page 32: Wed 11 April 2018 - University of the West of England...Putting Mental Wealth First For our students and staff Professor Steve West Vice-Chancellor, University of the West of England

● More accessible support

● More focus on student wellbeing

● An open and inclusive university

culture

Page 33: Wed 11 April 2018 - University of the West of England...Putting Mental Wealth First For our students and staff Professor Steve West Vice-Chancellor, University of the West of England

“Somewhere where it is easy to ask for

support and anyone you choose to turn

to would be informed enough to support

you in taking the next steps and finding

the appropriate people to talk to - so

many times people are sent in circles

and end up giving up. I would like them

to be able to support all types of mental

health issue, and even if that means

referring you outside of

university, you keep a key contact

within to support you. I would like it to be

seen as important enough to receive

regular funding and investment for the

future.”

Page 34: Wed 11 April 2018 - University of the West of England...Putting Mental Wealth First For our students and staff Professor Steve West Vice-Chancellor, University of the West of England

● How did you find moving from school to

university, and what did the university do to

support that?/ How could the university

have supported you?

● What helps you, or would support you to feel

involved and active in university life/ the

university community?

● What would help you realise your full

potential during your time at UWE?

Page 35: Wed 11 April 2018 - University of the West of England...Putting Mental Wealth First For our students and staff Professor Steve West Vice-Chancellor, University of the West of England

What are the impacts of

engaging students in your

strategy?

Page 36: Wed 11 April 2018 - University of the West of England...Putting Mental Wealth First For our students and staff Professor Steve West Vice-Chancellor, University of the West of England

Thank you for listening,

keep on listening to students!
