Gathering, Growing, & Going In Christ! Matthew 28:19-20

WECOME Whether this is your first time at St. Matthew or your thousandth, we’re

delighted you’re worshiping with us! Think of your worship experience

with us today as if you were dropping in on a conversation already in

progress – a conversation between God and His people. Realize this is

a conversation that began long before any of us were born and will

continue long after all of us have passed. So, do not be surprised if

there are some things that you do not understand right away. Be-

cause for a brief moment today, you’re stepping into a continual

stream of worship (in heaven and on earth) that reaches back into

ancient times, continues today, and will be offered into eternity. So,

let’s drop in on this conversation, for today God is here giving you His

gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation, found only in Jesus Christ.

FAMILIES IN WORSHIP We are very happy that you are here today! At St. Matthew we want

you to feel at home.

• First, please relax and enjoy your time here. Jesus knows that chil-

dren can wiggle and fuss sometimes, so please don’t feel embar-

rassed by it. Jesus welcomes little children and so does our church

family at St. Matthew!

• To make it bit easier on your family, please dare to sit toward the

front where your children can easily see the colors, candles, pastor

and acolytes, and embrace the action at the altar. What Jesus

does here promises to engaged them!

• As we worship, softly explain the liturgy to your children and en-

courage them to chime in on their parts: Amen! Lord have mercy!

I believe! Our Father! All of that belongs to them too!

• Be sure to sing, say, and pray your parts too as you stand and sit.

Your children learn by following mom and dad’s lead!

• If you feel you need somewhere quiet, there is a nursery available

to which an usher can direct you. There you can find a changing

station as well. We also have Busy Bags available.

Please know that while you are caring for God’s children, the rest of us

will be rejoicing in Jesus’ words: “Let the little children come to Me and

do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as

these” (Luke 18:16). Parents, keep up the good work!

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION

INVOCATION P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the

Holy Spirit.

C Amen. Matthew 28:19

CONFESSION P Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all thoughts

known, and from whom no secrets are hidden, cleanse

the desires of our hearts and the works of our hands by

Your Holy Spirit, that we may more fully love You and mag-

nify Your holy name.

C Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a right spirit

within me. Have mercy on me, O Lord, according to your

steadfast love. Psalm 51:1a, 10

(Silence For Reflection On God’s Word And Self-Examination)

P Let us confess our sins to almighty God,

C Eternal God, in whom I live, and move, and have my be-ing, whose face is hidden from me by my sins, and whose

grace I cheapen with the hardness of my heart. Cleanse

me from all my offenses, and deliver me from my proud

thoughts, my vain desires, my unwholesome conversa-

tions, and my hurtful actions. Forgive me all that is past,

and with the power of the Holy Spirit, reset my feet upon

the path of life, through Jesus Christ - His death and His res-

urrection, for my sake. Amen.

ABSOLUTION P Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon

us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His sake

forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in His name He

gives power to become the children of God and has

promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is bap-

tized shall be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all. Mark 16:16, John 1:12

C Amen. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Psalm 51:12

Revelation 5:12-13; 19:5-9

SALUTATION

P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. 2 Timothy 4:22

COLLECT P Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, You have given us grace to

acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity by the confes-sion of a true faith and to worship the Unity in the power of the Divine Majesty. Keep us steadfast in this faith and de-fend us from all adversities; for You, O Father, Son, and Ho-ly Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

READING Ephesians 1:3-14 P The reading for Trinity Sunday is from Ephesians, the 1st

chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heav-enly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his

grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and in-sight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the full-ness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been pre-destined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

SERMON

ATHANASIAN CREED

Whoever desires to be saved must, above all, hold the catholic

faith. Whoever does not keep it whole and undefiled will with-

out doubt perish eternally. And the catholic faith is this, that we

worship one God in Trinity and Trinity in Unity, neither confusing

the persons nor dividing the substance. For the Father is one

person, the Son is another, and the Holy Spirit is another. But the

Godhead of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit is

one: the glory equal, the majesty coeternal. Such as the Father

is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit: the Father uncreat-

ed, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated; the Father infi-

nite, the Son infinite, the Holy Spirit infinite; the Father eternal, the

Son eternal, the Holy Spirit eternal. And yet there are not three

Eternals, but one Eternal, just as there are not three Uncreated or

three Infinites, but one Uncreated and one Infinite.

In the same way, the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, the

Holy Spirit almighty; and yet there are not three Almighties, but

one Almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy

Spirit is God; and yet there are not three Gods, but one God. So

the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord; and yet

there are not three Lords, but one Lord.

Just as we are compelled by the Christian truth to acknowledge

each distinct person as God and Lord, so also are we prohibited

by the catholic religion to say that there are three Gods or

Lords. The Father is not made nor created nor begotten by any-

one. The Son is neither made nor created, but begotten of the

Father alone. The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son, nei-

ther made nor created nor begotten, but proceeding. Thus,

there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons;

one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. And in this Trinity none is

before or after another; none is greater or less than another; but

the whole three persons are coeternal with each other and coe-

qual, so that in all things, as has been stated above, the Trinity in

Unity and Unity in Trinity is to be worshiped. Therefore, whoever

desires to be saved must think thus about the Trinity.

Page 9: WECOMEstmatthewbarrington.org/docs/SUNDAY.pdf · C Have mercy on me and forgive me, O Lord. P Forgive us the poverty of our worship, our neglect of Your life-giving grace, our hesitating

But it is also necessary for everlasting salvation that one faithful-

ly believe the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, it is

the right faith that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus

Christ, the Son of God, is at the same time both God and man.

He is God, begotten from the substance of the Father before all

ages; and He is man, born from the substance of His mother in

this age: perfect God and perfect man, composed of a rational

soul and human flesh; equal to the Father with respect to His di-

vinity, less than the Father with respect to His humanity.

Although He is God and man, He is not two, but one Christ: one,

however, not by the conversion of the divinity into flesh, but by

the assumption of the humanity into God; one altogether, not by

confusion of substance, but by unity of person. For as the ra-

tional soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one Christ,

who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again

the third day from the dead, ascended into heaven, and is seat-

ed at the right hand of the Father, God Almighty, from whence

He will come to judge the living and the dead. At His coming

all people will rise again with their bodies and give an account

concerning their own deeds. And those who have done good

will enter into eternal life, and those who have done evil into

eternal fire.

This is the catholic faith; whoever does not believe it faithfully

and firmly cannot be saved.
