Volunteer Spotlight

Name: Jody Harris

Volunteer Position: Washington Winners Club Leader

1. How long have you been a 4-H volunteer? 11 years

2. What do you enjoy most about your 4-H role? I love watching the 4-H’ers learn and grow. Seeing the successes of the members makes me proud. The amazing youth that I get the honor to work with inspire me and make me a better person.

3. What do you like to do in your spare time? In my spare time I like to spend time with friends and family. I also enjoy creative outlets including quilting, photography, and wood burning.

4. If you could meet anyone from any time period, who would it be and why? I would love to meet Leonardo daVinci. His mind fascinates me and it would be interesting to talk to him and see him work. He was ahead of his time with his inventions and scientific discoveries. And was a creative gifted artist.

5. What is your favorite quote? “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love” Saint Mother Teresa

Junior Camp 4-H members from Hamilton, Humboldt, Webster, and Wright Counties attended Junior Camp in Madrid from June 12-14. Communication Events Any Webster County 4-H'er who participates in a communication event at fair will be invited to an ISU football game this fall!

Exhibit Tip Sheets If you are wondering what a judge is looking for in an exhibit category, check out our website for helpful information and tips on exhibits. There was also a resource list included in your fair packet.

Judging Are you wondering what the judge will ask you at the fair? The questions the judge will ask depends on your exhibit goals and how the exhibit looks.

Typically, the judge will ask the following: • What was your goal? (write down a clear, one

sentence goal statement before creating your exhibit) • How did you work toward reaching your goal?

• Where did you find the information or how did you learn the skill? (may also share the decisions you made and how you made them or problems you had and how you solved them)

• What plans or ideas do you have based on what you learned?

A great way to practice before judging is to visit with an adult such as a parent, leader, or another 4-H member. It is better to talk with someone about these items than to memorize a speech since you do not know exactly what the judge will ask.

Pinterest Are you eager to showcase what you’ve found on Pinterest at the county fair? Great! Just be sure to keep a couple things in mind when using Pinterest, or other internet sources, when preparing your 4-H exhibits for fair: Check out our website and your 4hOnline account for a helpful document on “Pinterest to projects.”

Style Show Order The order for Wednesday night, July 10, at the fair (auditorium) will be the following. Participants need to get in order at 6:30 p.m.

• Little Miss Contest • Senior Clothing Selection • Intermediate Clothing Selection • Junior Clothing Selection • Senior Fashion Revue • Intermediate Fashion Revue • Junior Fashion Revue • Senior $15 Challenge • Intermediate $15 Challenge • Junior $15 Challenge • King & Queen Contest

Club Host & Hostess Duties Each club is scheduled to monitor the 4-H auditorium during the fair. Here are some helpful tips: • Wear a 4-H T-shirt • Greet people, answer any questions, and walk around

the auditorium to keep a close watch on exhibits • Remind visitors that no food or drink is allowed in

building. • Keep floors free from litter and sweep floor if needed • Smile & have fun!

Carnival Tickets There are still several discounted (half off!) carnival tickets available. Tickets can be purchased online or at the Extension Office by July 10th. Only $5 for a strip of 10 tickets. Visit the Webster County Fair’s website for more information or to purchase tickets: http://www.webstercountyfairgroundsia.com/

Livestock Exhibitors at Fair Between Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. to Sunday at 4:00 p.m. please enter and exit through the gate off of 169 north of the livestock area. Gate will be open starting Sunday so you can use it anytime before that as well. You can park empty trailers all the way on the north side of the grass area just before the field north of the livestock area but be sure not to block the road coming in. There will be a lot of exhibitors vendors and entertainers setting up on Wednesday so please drive slowly. Remember our fair board members and fair planning committee are all volunteers who will be wearing light blue shirts if you have any questions or need help. They have put in countless hours to grow, organize and gain sponsorships with the goal of creating a great safe fair that we can all be proud to be apart of.

Woodchips Webster County Farm Bureau will pay for one bag of woodchips for each 4-H member exhibiting goat, horse, sheep, or swine at the fair. They will also supply a predetermined amount to the beef, poultry and rabbit barns. Please write a thank you to them.

Post-Fair Pool Party Join us at Rosedale Rapids for a 4-H fun night on Sunday, July 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This is a free event for 4-H families only. Let’s celebrate the fair, the end of another fun 4-H year, and have a great time with your friends and family! This event is sponsored by the Webster County 4-H Foundation.
